They were never really banned from 4chan as a whole, they were banned from posting pony images anywhere but in pony threads on /co/ (however that doesn't stop gems like this from slipping out)

however sometimes they're an artist or someone who does a lot of community things (like livestreaming) so they kind of need to have a name so people know that the art or stream is legit.

like, in the transformers general thread right now, some guy was posting a full comic page by page. there, the name helped because you could tell that the image replying to a previous page was going to in fact be the next page of the comic instead of some goon posting an unrelated page from a different comic.
