Author Topic: Wayward - A survival rogue-like  (Read 19425 times)

The following is Copy-pasta from the RogueBasin Wikipedia.

Wayward is a browser-based, turn-based, graphical roguelike currently in alpha. It is currently supported and will work in the latest versions of Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari, and Opera. In the game, there is a large focus on realism and survival. Because of these elements, most weapons, and items will need to be crafted by natural objects found around the terrain. Unlike traditional roguelikes, in Wayward there are no levels; however, you can gain different skills which increase your effectiveness for each of the individual skills. You can also increase your strength (health), hunger (starvation), and dexterity (stamina), by performing skills that would realistically use one or more of those attributes, for example, parrying increases dexterity and mining increases strength.
Stylistically, Wayward hearkens to a 16-bit aesthetic in graphics and in sound. Game mechanics wise, the game is similar to the Ultima series, more specifically, Ultima Online with inspiration from other roguelikes and roguelikelikes.

Now a comment on the game:
It seems awesome but I keep getting my ass kicked so I figured we could help each other learn about the game.
I have only managed to get through one night and the following day I died from being beat up and starving to death.

Look for gray stone and chip at it until you get rocks (4) for a camp fire I think you need something else but I forget what. (Something wooden?)
Use sharp rocks while pointing at a corpse to butcher the body for a piece of meat.
Stay the forget away from sharks and everything bigger then a large rat. (The lighter looking rats seems harder to kill)
Make sure you always have a shovel handy to dig up mushrooms and other stuff I starved trying to get a shovel while I was surrounded by food.

caution : bears can teleport

I actually managed to make a campfire (five rocks, any rock will do, and 2 branches) and cook a total of 3 trouts and 2 meat pieces.
I also killed a rabbit, a rat, and somehow a spider.

Starting to like this game.

also shale is a fine substitute to sharp rocks

how do you light fires?

How to light fires:

1a. Craft 1 branch, 1 log, 1 kindling and something sharp (shale or sharp rock for example) into a Fire Plough
1b. Craft 2 branches and 1 kinding into a Hand Drill
2. Doubleclick Fire Plough or Hand Drill untill you light something ablaze

How to camp:

>Get 5 rocks and 2 branches and make a campfire
>Light campfire on fire
>Instant light and cooking machine

thanks, I have a campfire but it's dark in here

Tree Bark: can be found hitting trees
Cactus Spines: dig up a cactus
A Poor Needle: 1 cactus spines

Bark Leggings: 4 tree bark and 2 string

it takes more material to make gloves than a tunic or pants? what

can you make any other tools? I can't chop down wood or mine for stuff
you can chip at them for useful things though
some trees/rocks go down in a few whacks and some take forever

Poor Axe: 2 sharp rocks, 1 branch and 1 string
Poor Shovel: 1 sharp rock, 2 branches and 1 string
it takes more material to make gloves than a tunic or pants? what
gloves are more complicated to make than, say, a tunic.
