Off Topic / Map of the Dead

In preparation of the impending apocalypse, I believe this should be made widely available.

Basically, Google Maps now has the capacity to guide you to jewelry stores that might just double as army training grounds.

I live in forget nowhere lol
I am safe. Are you?

Off Topic / Windows Vista won't boot
« on: April 03, 2012, 04:42:50 PM »
So my stuffty Inspiron 1525 won't boot Windows Vista anymore. Great.

I want to recover everything that I can before I hit it with a hammer, so I'm looking for advice to recover any last files that I can.

So here's what I can do with it:

- Boot Ubuntu
- Do stuff with Ubuntu

And here's what I can't do:

- Boot Windows normally (starts loading, never stops)
- Boot Windows in safe mode (restarts after it supposedly loads
- Last known good configuration (advanced) (gives me another endless loading cycle)
- Boot the OS installation disc (loads Windows files, loads, get black screen, mouse won't pop up)

And here's the message that I get when I follow this tutorial to access my Windows files through Ubuntu:

Quote
Mount is denied because the NTFS volume is already exclusively opened.
The volume may be already mounted, or another software may use it which
could be identified for example by the help of the 'fuser' command.

so uh
Any ideas?
I'm expecting a "you are forgeted".

Hello,

This topic was created to evaluate and assess the problems associated with the Adventure Map scene here in Blockland. What does the community think? What do we want to see?

Apart from simple discussion in this topic, there is a Google form you can fill out to help the cause.

Form Ten questions. Multiple choice and short answer.
Result Spreadsheet

Also, new rule on the form: Gibberish and snide comments as opposed to just leaving a box blank will result in your entry being deleted. Come on guys, its childish and stupid. Get over yourselves.

Please feel free to discuss the questions in the form, ideas, etc. in this topic. So far results are coming in at a slow but steady rate, and bearing some great and interesting answers.

Off Topic / Looking for Help w/ Simple Sprite Run Cycle
« on: March 03, 2012, 01:34:39 PM »
Goes in Off Topic? Why not.
Anyway

So I'm making a very small, cheap and useless project that after this topic, none of you will ever hear about again. These are the two 'main characters'. I need help with the running cycle. I'm aiming to have a distinct one for both m/f.

Looking for resources/templates/criticism/etc. for them. If you'd like to personally revise them/add to them, feel free. It's for school, but I'd give you credit.

Looking to have the animation be greater than 3 frames.

I don't think this topic will go that far.
...

Should be noted that when operating they are going to be significantly larger, probably about by 5-10 times then the actual size.

Thanks in advance for any help.

There are six to vote from.
Unfortunately, it's on Facebook.
The link to the official vote is here.
If you don't have a Facebook - or even if you do - vote here as well.

End is making an entry for the Portal 2 Exile Vilify Music Video Contest.
I'm filming with a Canon HV20.
If you haven't played Portal 2: play it.

My dad's let me use his old office (which is in our basement) as a studio. Surprisingly everything fits. Otherwise so far I've recorded in at least six different fields, behind my mom's apartment, at the top of some hill, at a deer farm (yes, I saw a deer today), at my cousins', on the sides of roads and in the middle of the woods (primarily for timelapses).

Here are two pictures of the main 'set':

Aperture-styled office space:

Panel-styled corner:

The panels were actually fairly cheap to make, and the office space is just my desk and some old officey stuff. The desktop still works so I can plug my laptop into it, but the fax machine is dead. Oh well.

I've also dug up some newspapers from 1986 for realism (the year production of GLaDOS was started).

And yes, even they are references.

Concerning the matters at hand:

The set should be finished by Thursday and I should be able to start filming. I have a timeline for the song and what I want to do, but don't want to give it away. Let's just say that I'm throwing paint around and following minor portions of the Lab Rat comic. It'll extend after the events of Portal.

I want to stay true to both the game and the song (obviously Exile Vilify).

I want to do this by emphasizing Rattman and Chell's individual relationships with GLaDOS. Chell indirectly. Basically, how they both "exile vilify" if you catch my drift.

I may or may not use actors (I have two different friends in mind who would do it). I'm also not an artist. So that's funny too because it revolves around art.

So basically, if anyone has any thoughts/ideas, criticism on the set, ETC. Please let me know.

Yeah.

Games / Recent Hacks / Minecraft Attempted Hack and EO Down
« on: June 14, 2011, 04:15:21 PM »
http://www.1up.com/news/minecraft-eve-online-hit-by-hackers

forget this stuff. Just recently Bethesda was hacked and personal information has been stolen, and before that Nintendo (Europe), Epic Games, Codemasters, Sony, ETC. Now Eve Online is down and Minecraft had a shot at it. Great. In retaliation of the arrest of Anonymous members, the Spanish police have also been hacked.

Not only is it annoying it's stupid and achieves nothing.

Seriously though, it's getting old.

EDIT: Forgot to mention The Escapist was also hit today.

Yes, I have way to many technical problems and horribly underpowered and out of date machines. ANYWAY:

Quote from: end's post on the ubuntu forums
Hello.

Just a heads-up; Although I try, I'm an idiot when it comes to computers so please try to bear with me. ;)

Recently I installed Ubuntu 10.10 on a desktop I use on occasion. It is a Dell Dimension E510. It was running on Windows XP(?) and I think ours dates back to around 2005 or 2007, but I can't say so with certainty.

Anyway, let's say it was about ten days ago when I installed. Everything worked fine and was great. But now the computer won't boot and I'm at a total loss of where I should go from here.

To summarize what happens: Basically I hit the power button and can hear the machine turn on (the monitor's power button is stuck on, so it's already powered), but the screen just stays dark.

I've done a slight amount of research and tested to see if it was the CPU behind it, and if removing any external devices would help (which I'm still not sure if it isn't the culprit) to no avail. My younger sister uses the computer almost exclusively for charging her iPod - which in that case may be related. I'm curious if anyone knows other methods to get around the possibility of it being a CPU problem just in case.

In the end I'm just looking into insights/recommendations from anyone to try and get this fixed and out of my way. Any help is welcome and I'm thankful for.

tl;dr: I installed Ubuntu on my old desktop and it basically left. Anyone have any insights on what I could do to get it back up and running again? It'd be appreciated.

Gameinformer summary of Kotaku article.

Off Topic / GS Midnight Launch = What
« on: April 18, 2011, 06:10:54 PM »
Okay, so I think this is the forum for this.

In a few hours I'm embarking on a 45 minute drive to Gamestop for a midnight launch. Thing is, I don't know what the forget I'm doing.

I got a phonecall telling me to show up at 10 PM for some party or something, but do I have to get there then? I looked this up on google and I found a forum relating to the 3ds launch that said they can't run the registers after a certain time. Is this true? Has anyone gone to one of these things before?

I also know that both Portal 2 (which I'm getting) and Mortal Kombat are being released tonight, so yes, I'm a bit 'skeptical' about a crowd and the ring of intelligence.

tl;dr: Anyone gone to a gamestop midnight launch before?
Do I have to get there at a certain time?

I just don't want to get my ass shooed away and look like a beggar, than be forced to return tomorrow.

Pardon me for being an ass.

Help / Crippling lag on player connections
« on: April 05, 2011, 08:16:43 PM »
Hey.

I've just started hosting again recently on a new installation of Vista, and everything has seemed right (as right as it gets on this piece of stuff), except for how every time a player connects I lag the hell out. It didn't used to do this; everything was fine. It seems that the quality of the service is degrading, but it should still work the same, right?

I also tried accessing my server from a separate computer on my LAN. Same result.

Anyone have any suggestions/theories on how to fix it?
The computer causing it? The modem causing it?

Thanks in advance.

Games / Mass Effect 2: Arrival DLC
« on: March 28, 2011, 05:06:11 PM »
Arrival is ME2's final DLC.
It's out tomorrow now. 560 MS/BW points. $7 PS3 (rough equivalent).
Decisions will affect ME3 story, supposedly like LotSB will.

Accessible after Horizon mission.

"A deep cover agent is missing in Batarian space, after reporting evidence of an imminent Reaper invasion. Shepard must travel to the edge of the galaxy, rescue the agent, and discover the truth behind the Arrival. Uncover new research and 3 new achievements in this spectacular new adventure for Mass Effect 2."

"While Arrival isn't the bridge that many expected and might have hoped would extend the endgame of Mass Effect 2, connecting it to this holiday's Mass Effect 3, it still shows signs of being a good piece of DLC. The mission seems to be on par with "Lair of the Shadow Broker" and "Project Overlord" in its scope and delivery -- an action-packed add-on that extends the universe in a meaningful way."

UPDATES

8th of March, 2011: Topic posted. Joy to the world.

ABOUT

I've been messing with this idea for some time now.
After some tinkering I think it's pretty good.

To explain:

Take for example the common house build.
Many people make houses, but do they always look the same?

How would you build a house?
Would you make the kitchen in the front with a porch behind it?
Maybe you'd make it blue while someone else makes their's red.

This challenge revolves around that concept.

If everyone was to build the same thing, who would make the best?
Whose build would be more original?
Whose build would people like more than others?
How would they do that?

...

Basically, this is a competition to see how multiple people would build similar things.
And I guess it's also to see whose people like the best.

Like the idea or hate it, entering is your choice.

Will happen in this sequence:

1. Vote for build theme
1.1. (Possible argument over videogame idea)
2. Vote for two ideas for the builds.
3. Build.
4. Vote.
5. Winner gets prize ya'll can go home.

See below section, 'Stages' for more information.

PRIZE TO CLAIM

Whoever comes out on top is granted the sheer feeling of victory and self accomplishment.
They can also pat themselves on the back.

Kidding.
Obviously patting yourself on the back is optional.

Then again, you can also win up to $30 worth of games of your choice on

Prize(s) will be gifted to you.
See rules for more information.

STAGES

STAGE ONE

Relatively simple is this stage. For five days people will vote on the build theme the contest will center around.
After that, for five days ideas are welcome as to what should be included in the said build theme.
(Ambiguous ideas like a bench or lamppost, if ya'll get what I mean)
After that, for another five days people can vote on a new poll, and two ideas have been chosen.
That's a good twenty days yes, but hopefully it will pay off.

Please note that participants can 'sign up' during this stage, yet stage two would be a better time to do so.

STAGE TWO

This stage is the primary stage, and centers around building.
Immediately following stage one, builds can be started on.
This stage lasts probably just under one month and a half, (or otherwise, slightly lesser than six weeks).
'Signing up' and build submission can take place at any time during this period, just remember the rules.

Note: If there's less than 5 people at this point it's not worth it and End will probably bail. No real competition.

STAGE THREE

Voting.
All builds submitted will be viewable on this post.
After about a week or slightly longer, a winner will be decided.
Simple.

PARTICIPANTS

- Unlimited Space -

Remember, five minimum.
And yes, you can bet the hell this section is probably in the most unfitting spot.

RULES

BUILDING

  • Build must represent the general idea voted on.
  • Build must also include the two ideas for features voted on.
  • There is no brick limit.
  • One builder will win, but another, and only another (one person) may help.
  • Build must have been started after or relatively short before stage two!
  • Builds need to be linked to or pictures of them must be posted in this topic. PMs are also accepted.

PRIZE CLAIMING

  • User will be PM'd a notification of victory, will respond with prizes and can argue with Endgame (Endco) on Steam.
  • Only one time will the winner be gifted (no multiple transactions to spend the money). Waiting is fine for a short while.
  • If you do not have Steam, after winning the contest you will have a reason to own Steam. Don't beg for an alternate prize.

VOTING

  • Don't loving vote for your friend's build, vote for the one you loving think deserves the prize.
  • Voting for yourself is overrated but I suppose nobody will know if you do anyway.

CONCERNING OPTIONS

At first there will be six voting options.
These options include three related to architecture and three related to terrain.

Architecture: Historic Landmark
Architecture: Futuristic
Architecture: Videogame Based
Terrain: Scenic Overlook
Terrain: Cave
Terrain: Videogame Based

Probably most prominent are the 'Videogame Based' options.
With these, there will be an extra (hopefully short if needed) session over arguing about which.
We'll pull through eventually.

Also note that the videogame terrain option will not truly have to represent the places, just the concepts.
(Example: Capital Wasteland, F3: Post-Apocalyptic Landscape)

Then again, if anyone objects to those options, post and complain with an intellect and I'll try and satisfy.
No pun intended.

That about sums it up. Yip.
If you want, take your seats.
Builds should be posted in gallery and linked to or pictures in this topic. Later on I'll resize the images and put them somewhere on this post, probably.

...

I already have the Collector's Edition pre-ordered, and have been looking forward to it for some time. The demo was pretty good and fun, even if it seemed repetitive in the beginning and was nothing really new.

As far as I'm concerned, the voice acting is a little iffy and in life-or-death situations stomping dead corpses for ammo/money might get in the way (in the original game when you killed an enemy, it dropped an item; now it's more RPG like and stomping/shooting/kinesis is almost always required). The detail and color has seemed to improve and the city looks awesome.

And as far as the controls, there's some changes but they'll probably be easy for you to get used to. Luckily they've added some small, clever features including how stasis can be 'refueled' quickly if you have stasis packs in your inventory (like med-pack functions in the original). I'm pretty sure that stasis also does this automatically on it's own over a longer period of time. I didn't notice that in the demo though - but then again I'm so used to having to save it from in the first game because of possible Brute attacks that I guess I really didn't use it that much.

New enemies like 'the pack,' 'the puker' and 'the stabber' is it? keep variety alive and have some rather interesting traits. Again, I'm looking forward to the real thing.

Are you planning on buying it? Renting it? Playing or played the demo? Neither?
Think it looks good or bad?

Roughly a week left. Couple hundred minutes.
