Games / Zombie Game Idea *UPDATED*: Opinions and Feedback
« on: May 06, 2011, 08:53:16 PM »
Essentially I made this thread to share with you all an interesting game idea. I didn't exactly know where it should go, I am technically discussing a game, but it seems most of the threads here are about already created games.

Also, if anyone here has read World War Z then you may see some major similarities. I am in the middle of reading this, and as I progress I may have idea changes. I would like to just discuss the gameplay and general concept of the game, I may make it myself one day, but I highly doubt anytime soon.

Imagine if you will, a world torn by devastation unseen by mankind. A deadly virus has risen from the evolutionary gene pool, one that kills the body, and then makes it's brain a controlling center for it's needs. The virus only has two objectives, similar to any animals, gain nutrition and reproduce.

The virus began in a small third world country off the coast of Asia, small and generally unstable, genocides and civil wars rage throughout the land. No superpower in the world wants to touch this cesspool of greed and corruption, the everyday citizen knows nothing about it. Yet, when the virus begins mutating and infecting hundreds across both sides of the 10 year long civil war, the severity of the nation's problems become increasingly noticeable by the global media.

The year is 2018, and the world is surprisingly similar to this world we live in now. No major technological leaps have occurred, world hunger has become an even larger issue, wars rage throughout Northern Africa. America on the other hand has re-stabilized it's economy, gained the international stage once again for the creation of the first auto-drive car. Gun sales are sky high, gas prices rise and fall as they have for years, unemployment is at an all time low. Europe and America have created a international currency, the Oria, a plastic alternative to the Euro and the Dollar.

The world is better then it has been for nearly 10 years.

Yet this small country will ruin it all, starvations inside it's borders spread, people immigrate from America to Germany. Congress passes an anti-immigration bill, ensuring military action in the event of a major migration of these people. This is when the problem truly starts. These migrants carry the virus, 2/10 of them enter the reanimation stage 10 hours after they arrive in their target country. "T9k" as the government calls it, begins spreading like wild fire through America, Europe, Asia; essentially any country with a big enough population to sustain it. The virus actually transmits through bites and any fluid to victim contact that might occur.

Governments begin shutting down borders completely, but black market organ transplants, tainted food supplies, and already infected allow the quarantine's only purpose to keep people in. Israel, one of the hardest hit begins a voluntary man-slaughter, killing thousands of it's own people, Africa follows suit.

Europe begins massive safe zones, testing subjects before they enter and heavily guarding these areas from infections.

Asia and America, with hugely populated cities, and barely any real government action begin to cry out for more support from the military. Small armed forces begin attempting to hold off the infected, a battle outside of Manhattan, only 4,000 men against the millions that live there, fails horribly. Only head shots kill the virus, and modern day weapons, built for the killing of the living are not well-equipped for this type of warfare.

You start the game in a small rural town, before the initial infections of millions. You are born only 16  years before the first case of the virus, and now 18 you begin your daily life in this horribly ignorant America. You are beginning to move out of your parents small country home, and slowly you bring your stuff to your new apartment in the city, Los Angeles.

Your new job, developing security software for a big banking firm, is going to get you the money you need for your new life. You have barely any worries, you just celebrated with some friends, you've just settled into your new office, until the diner's owner turns up the TV's volume.

You look around and see the President with a very stern, solemn expression. He is talking about a outbreak of the "T9k virus" in the United States, Britain, and France. He speaks about the steps being taken to suppress the virus, and how the "federal government is doing everything in it's power to stop the outbreak of this horrible atrocity to mankind". He promises that despite the failure to contain the virus in Asia, we "will not fail, for this country has and will overcome anything in it's way to survival".

You turn to your friend who is simply laughing at how he thinks the President is a complete idiot, and the American victim is probably just vying for attention. This is where gameplay begins.

You drive home, and as you enter your apartment, a sandbox/rpg feel begins to take shape, you can alter your apartment however you want, from kicking in a wall, to moving around furniture, whatever your feelings feel the need to do. You then turn on  your TV to see some review on the Presidents address to the country, flipping the channel to "Comedies Center" you see some political comedian making poking fun at some political figures, and sarcastically going over the day's news.

At this point, I'd just like to add that I would suppose most of this game would be non-linear, allowing the player to play freely, and not have to follow certain storyline quests or missions.

As time goes on, the player lives a free life, more news about the progression of the virus, but no outbreaks big enough to cause militaristic quarantines and evacuations. Until a randomly picked friend or family member becomes sick with the virus, they are taken to a hospital and you see them taken away from you. I say randomly picked to preserve replay value.

You have no inherited a bit of money, and are faced with the decision to move away, stay in the city, etc. Whatever you do here changes gameplay through the game, for you are setting the environment  you will be surviving, or dying in. As you go throughout the game, the infections spread, more and more people die and more and more government reactions happen throughout the world. People around you die, and finally months after the initial US infection, LA is put into a federal quarantine. The Battle of Manhattan has already taken place, the government doesn't want that again with another large populous city.

You are forced into a militia type group, some are actually people you went to school with, co-workers, family. "Teks" or the living dead are pouring from the streets, locked up in homes and apartments, they are everywhere. It's your job with your friends to rebuild great America.

And you can't rebuild if the living dead kill you first.

Games / Should I get CivilizationV?
« on: March 11, 2011, 07:19:25 PM »
Simply put, I enjoy strategy games, I enjoyed Civ4 when I got it, played it recently as-well, but after seeing some of the improvements that Civ5 has, I was wondering if the $50 is worth it?

I have over $100 from Christmas still, and I am getting a little impatient with Steam and it's random sales, so if you could just review your experience or opinions, that'd help.

Plus, discuss other good strategy games.

Just noticed before I went to bed, today is my 2 year anniversary here. I would get all nostalgic and start reminiscing on my time here, but I'd like to just open up a thread for others to discuss how far we all have come.

So, I haven't really bought a DLC before for a Steam game, and since today I just bought the first one for New Vegas, how do I know if it has installed?

Just some quick pointers would be helpful.

Didn't know if anyone else had seen this, or if it has already been posted, but I was looking around MSN.com when I found that they had an article about someone making a Brotherhood of Steel Power Armor helmet from the game Fallout.

Anyways, there's the link if you want to see for yourselves, and just discuss the detail Josh Jay put into it.

So today, January 4th, MegaMillions will be hopefully picking out the winning numbers to their lottery. My parents are thinking of just buying a few tickets for fun.

Discuss the improbability of winning the lottery or what you would do with that sort of money.

Off Topic / A Nostalgic New Year
« on: January 01, 2011, 03:26:23 AM »
I am aware that there are many New Years topics already, and they were made by everyone from around the world. But I just wanted to take a look back at this past decade. Mine and many of your first decades, the modern world has changed, for better or worse.

We have all made mistakes we probably would want to take back, but hey, can't go back and fix everything. I am hoping however that this decade, 2011 to 2020, will be the better decade. A time that will give life to some of the best things we all could do. And I hope that not only the world will get better in these next 10 years, but we will better the world.

Just wanted to say Happy New Years and I wish you all, regardless your thought on this last decade, a better one to come.

Off Topic / Snowed in the Valley!
« on: December 31, 2010, 01:08:52 AM »
In Arizona, the north of the state always gets snow this time of year, but not anywhere near Phoenix. I live in Fountain Hills which is just a little north of Phoenix and we too get no snow. But this year with the combination of rain and "extreme" below freezing cold, we got a little snow!

« on: December 14, 2010, 07:52:46 PM »
Anyone in Highschool or who have been through highschool can relate.

I'm a freshman this year and our first semester came to a close today, finals start tomorrow. I've been told to basically not cram it all in or my body will stuff it all out, but I am slowly studying while listening to stimulating music and it is all flowing in easily.

Discuss your experiences.

Games / Remembering Spore '05
« on: October 27, 2010, 07:18:23 PM »
Remember back when Spore, the game that was supposed to change the gaming world was this break through game about evolution? It was scientific, it had everything a gamer would want in a game like that.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T8dvMDFOFnA

But then, after the years passed, the game got "cuter" and more child friendly. Like Maxis was aiming it's gun at the child population of the world. It was Americanized.

I just wanted to have a nice little discussion about what could have been. And yes, this is 5 years old, but today is today, and it's not like talking about the past is this horrible idea forged on the gates of hell. So, friendly discussion, kick around Maxis and EA for ruining a good game, and such.

Well, this thread was about Planet Simulations, but now that Yuki kindly just made us all start hoping 2011 would be here, From Dust Discussion.

Chahi's game, which is being made by a team at Ubisoft and was formerly called Project Dust, is an Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation3 god game that puts you in control of the elements on a simulated island. Your actions — the way you mold the land — decides the fate of the game's virtual people.

The game's a beauty so far and is set for release next year. We'll have more on this game from Gamescom.

Off Topic / Rain. Rain Everywhere.
« on: October 05, 2010, 11:28:30 PM »
So, out here in the American desert southwest, you may all know that we only get small amounts of rain all year. Less then a foot in reality.

So when we went from our 100 degree "relief" weather last week, to the now rain and thunderstorms today, you can imagine my excitement. I went to school with a large overcast sky, hoping it would sprinkle a bit. Later in the day, we started feeling heavier winds, and then as school was ending the rain started. Pouring out of the loving sky along with golf ball sized hail, and possible tornadoes. This isn't normal, and was not expected.
