I'm not understanding on of this and what prevents him from being able to transfer files on his schools computer to their network drive, but your xbox needs to configure your flash drive to be able to store stuff on it. Once it's configured, you cannot use it for other stuff unless you format it on your computer again. It's one or the other; xbox or pc storage.

...It is an Xbox 360, not anything else.
my PC reads it as having ~700mb free and the rest belonging to the XBOX hidden folder.
