I don't know about you guys, honestly, I've been a Political Activist & Debater for 25 years now, and as someone who is in higher debate and attends like 9-12 regional statewide and national tournaments a year, I'm pretty sure I know how this works, there's some serious straw-men & no true Scotsmen going on in this topic.
ah hell. i don't think i'm qualified to debate with you

the question here is what level of irony and sarcasm should we reach before I disengage and go cook dinner

The DACA debate almost doesn't even hinge on what Mexico is like. It would be stuffty if we were sending people back to Norway if they lived their entire life in the United States as a peaceful, law-abiding immigrant.

I'm sorry but if you go through the proper channels and aren't allowed into the country anyway, that's just tough stuff man. We don't need to automatically accept people into the country and we shouldn't. It's burdensome because we like to screen people thoroughly so we don't end up like Swedenistan or London or Paris or whatever place in Europe you wanna pick that's chock full of bullstufftery due to the lax immigration. Can some of bureaucracy be curtailed? Yes, definitely. Without a doubt. But that doesn't mean the process itself is too cumbersome.
i don't think most people would advocate for an automatic approval. it'd create a reasonable enough national security concern that i think some amount of screening would always be wholly justified. though the reason for the laws being cumbersome doesn't have to do with screening, it's just a spaghetti of requirements and procedures that are lengthy and leave many people without any path to citizenship at all. like you said, the problems mostly lie in bureaucracy that should probably be greatly simplified. a lot of immigration law could probably be considered fairly outdated, and i think it'd be safe to say that the procedures haven't done a very good job at evolving with changing times.

Your attitude here is that there exists no middle ground besides the stuff we've got now and strictly-open borders.

There kind of isn't. If you allow exceptions for illegals then you might as well just open your borders because you're just going to get illegals that make sure they qualify for that exception, which defeats the purpose of having immigration laws against illegal entry in the first place. Honestly if we give amnesty to every single "dreamer" we're gonna have some Prince of Egypt type stuff where people float their children down the river and we take them in and treat them like royalty or some bullstuff.
