What happens if I format my ps3's HDD?

I will lose data blah blah I don't mind that.

I just want to know if I will be able to still use my ps3.

TLDR : I just format and plug my internet in, update the OS, update LBP and play, is that possible?

So the formatting won't delete the basic OS there is on my ps3?

I don't have a disk with the OS.

AFAIK the system configurations won't get deleted unlike all other files.

It's just what I've read on random sites that I've just googled for you, the info could also be wrong. I'd wait for a second opinion.
