General Discussion / Re: On the subject of terrain maps and vehicles
« on: June 04, 2012, 08:21:38 AM »
Soon being after V21 comes out
which is who knows when
I wouldn't count on vehicle physics being updated anytime ever. Apparently the focus is shifting purely towards building, so that's probably where you will see any work done.

I disagree with _Rave_ when he says taking out terrain will make servers better. There is no logic in stating that removing option A will make people work harder using option B. No one will be "forced" to build better tdm's, people will just stop making them altogether.

I hope you're not implying what I think you are!
Haha, I was joking.

prolly someone DDoSing his servers.
Hmmm... I wonder who would benefit from that?

people don't build because they don't like to spend time and would rather just quickly play. with maps being removed, those same people will just download builds to play on.
I agree completely. The level of stupidity coming from the shader fanboys in this topic amazes me. People saying "it will allow for more updates", and "people will build better" clearly have no idea what they are talking about.

This update is all about making the game look better for potential buyers. It has no thought into actual gameplay whatsoever. It will not make people build better, it will only reduce this game to freebuilds and RP's.

96
Well, why not just place a whole bunch of blocks?
You are talking about a brick count up in the millions. It will lag regardless of what they do to the engine.
That, or the server will be made out of 32x cubescape.

97
Server CPU usage = # of bricks * # of players
More bricks = more lag

You can't run a really big lag-free server without using terrain or interiors.

98
I would rather have Terrains and Interiors, because many of the best servers depend on it.

Not even the start/stop buttons worked. Couldn't even close the remote client app. So I guess the remote client froze.

Anyway, server crashed again, as in still working but everyone disconnects. Autosaver was not present, so I guess it's something else.

Brick count is 51k, so at every autosave there was a slight lag spike. After it happened, the remote console stopped responding, so I went here and reported, After a minute or two, I restarted the remote console and found that the server had already stopped. I don't know when, or why.

Just now some of your servers just crashed, including mine, pecon's and grapple knife's.

I happened to be running a trace:
Code: [Select]
Entering timeBomb::process(4287)
   Entering AutoSaver_Bomb::onTick(4287, 1202693)
      Entering AutoSaver_saveBricks(autosave, 1, 1)
         Entering getBrickGroupFromObject(4624)
         Leaving getBrickGroupFromObject() - return 4611
         Entering getBrickGroupFromObject(4625)
         Leaving getBrickGroupFromObject() - return 4611
         Entering getBrickGroupFromObject(4642)
         Leaving getBrickGroupFromObject() - return 4611
         Entering getBrickGroupFromObject(4734)
         Leaving getBrickGroupFromObject() - return 4611
         Entering getBrickGroupFromObject(4735)
         Leaving getBrickGroupFromObject() - return 4611
         Entering getBrickGroupFromObject(4743)
         Leaving getBrickGroupFromObject() - return 4611
         Entering getBrickGroupFromObject(4969)
         Leaving getBrickGroupFromObject() - return 4611
         Entering getBrickGroupFromObject(4970)
         Leaving getBrickGroupFromObject() - return 4611
         Entering getBrickGroupFromObject(4971)
         Leaving getBrickGroupFromObject() - return 4611
         Entering getBrickGroupFromObject(4972)
         Leaving getBrickGroupFromObject() - return 4611
         Entering getBrickGroupFromObject(4973)

         (Repeats endlessly)

As you can see, the culprit seems to be the autosaver (or saving in general). This could explain why only some servers go down, and why it happens at regular intervals.

The autosaver used to work fine before, but perhaps this is related to the server being switched?

It seems to run fine when the server is empty.

Server disconnected again. I am going to run a trace without any players and see what happens.

Randomly. The console says nothing unusual, and the cpu load is already much too high to run with trace enabled.

Every 12 hour keep forget crashed! You better fix it or I will kick your ass! And I am very pissed off. You are the one responsible take care of maintenance these server make sure run smooth or I will switch server serivce with Lub will set it up in future.
This also happens on my server. After running for a while, suddenly everyone in the server is disconnected, and after that, no one can join. The server responds in the remote console like usual, so it does not seem to actually crash. The only solution that seems to work is rebooting the server.

This is a major problem for me, because as of now it is not possible to host a 24/7 server without constantly having to restart it. I see several of your other clients are having the same problem, which indicates there could be something wrong on your end.

I want you to look into this, and fix the problem if it turns out to be on your end. If nothing is done about this, I will have no choice but to find someone else to host for me.
