Strategy Games

What are strategy games?

Strategy games are any sort of game that requires immense tactical thinking.

What elements are incorporated into the typical strategy game?

In most strategy games you will typically find these things; resource gathering, empire building and the destruction of the enemy empires.

What kinds of strategy games are there?

RTS, TBS, 4X, MOBA, those are the most common.

The Strategy Tree

RTS
A genre that, is, of course, real time (Real Time Strategy). It's basically like a bunch of people building an army and then attacking the other players, plus, it all happens at once, no turns. This is my favorite genre.

TBS
This genre is basically RTS, except for the fact that it's turn based (Turn Based Strategy). This one is the most common as far as what I've seen, though IMO it doesn't match up to the quality of RTS games like Warcraft 3.

More to be added at the community's request.

Notable Games
The entire Warcraft franchise (excluding WoW)

Starcraft & Starcraft 2

Command and Conquer franchise

Civilization series

Warhammer 40k franchise

More to be added today, I'm busy.

Also calling MOBAs strategy games seems like a stretch to me

Grand Strategy??
I've never played one, I really want to try 'em out though.

MOBAs are a subgenre of RTS, so sure it's appropriate.

company of heeeeeeeeeeroooooooooooos

Endless Legends is fun as hell.

Oooo, also Anno 2070, and perhaps the Guild II, or any of the Paradox grand strategies.

I like Galactic Civilizations II. A lot.

anyone got a good RTS that isn't Grand Strategy? i want to get into something more than PDS games.

Homeworld Series
World In Conflict
Supreme Commander 1 and FA
Empire Earth

all RTS ^

is there a reason no one has brought up dota 2 or league of legends?

or are those not RTS

I mean, yeah they're strategic games, but most people consider them as mobas, so when you talk strat games you don't necessarily bring them up.

oh man this thread is gonna have to be big

there are a lot of subdivisions of strategy
