Well I'm pretty sure the left one was luck and the right one is a disaster. I'm sick of staring at it and not being able to fix it so I'm done with this piece. There are a ton of mistakes but it's only the second one I've ever done so I have room for improvement. I'm going to move on the my next study, which will be a pure value study and not color and value at the same time. I'll also be using a reference so it should look a bit more real next time.

for the portrait, tone down the lips a bit. and the right eye could be fixed by rotating up the right lower edge and increasing the shadow towards the far end of the eye.
