General Discussion / Race of Madness brainstorm
« on: October 22, 2012, 12:23:20 AM »
I'm making a Halloween minigame in which players race through levels that test their saneness and hopefully delves them into madness. I'm basing some levels off of famous psychological experiments. For example, level 1 is all about Skinner. You can either walk a long plank over a chasm, or click a button for a chance at skipping the whole thing. Of course the button will have slightly less chance of being faster, but the point of it is to get people addicted to the button like people do with gambling. Another example is level 3, which is all about Pavlov and his dog. Players will be conditioned to click the yellow buttons to get to the next steps, but then I switched it up on them and make the green buttons the ones that don't kill them.

If you have any ideas for levels, that would be great. I have created 8 so far.

Help / Bug Reports: RTB compatibilty
« on: October 21, 2012, 05:50:49 PM »
After selecting/deselecting to add-ons you want in the RTB mod manager, you have to restart Blockland before the changes are copied to the Start Game screen.

In-game RTB server settings are not saved the next time you start a server.

Help / Bug Report: Start Game Screen

When you start a game, if you click select twice too fast (clicking the second time before the add-ons list fully loads), all of your loaded add-ons are deselected.

Help / Events window "arrows" dissapeared
« on: October 20, 2012, 03:50:38 PM »
I had a client-sided mod that redid the event window GUI. I deleted it, but now the arrows that change the event's order of execution have disappeared! I tried restarting Bl but it didn't change anything :(

Off Topic / Technocracy
« on: October 17, 2012, 11:30:34 PM »
I'm wondering what you guys think of this form of government compared to other forms that exist or are theorized today. I personally think that technocracy is an excellent idea, but instead of having meritable individuals in positions of responsibility, we have a functional document.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Technocracy

"Technocracy is a form of government in which experts in technology would be in control of all decision making. Scientists, engineers, and technologists who have knowledge, expertise, or skills, would compose the governing body, instead of politicians, businessmen, and economists.[1] In a technocracy, decision makers would be selected based upon how knowledgeable and skillful they are in their field."

Off Topic / Your approach to life
« on: October 13, 2012, 10:41:58 PM »
So apparently "normative ethics" "is the branch of philosophical ethics that investigates the set of questions that arise when considering how one ought to act, morally speaking" (Wikipedia).

There seems to be several main philosophies going around in everyone's minds; Virtue ethics, Deontology, Consequentialism, and some others.

"A virtue ethicist, however, would focus less on lying in any particular instance and instead consider what a decision to tell a lie or not tell a lie said about one's character and moral behavior. As such, lying would be made in a case-by-case basis that would be based on factors such as personal benefit, group benefit, and intentions (as to whether they are benevolent or malevolent)." (Wikipedia) I basically understand that as someone to make decisions based on how they want others to view them.

Deontology "judges the morality of an action based on the action's adherence to a rule or rules.[1] It is sometimes described as "duty" or "obligation" or "rule" -based ethics, because rules "bind you to your duty"." (Wikipedia) This seems to me someone who thinks lying is always wrong no matter what.

Consequentialism holds that "the consequences of one's conduct are the ultimate basis for any judgment about the rightness of that conduct. Thus, from a consequentialist standpoint, a morally right act (or omission) is one that will produce a good outcome, or consequence." I understand this as someone determining is lying or not would produce the outcomes they want.

There is a subset of consequentialism called "Hedonistic Utilitarianism." "This form of utilitarianism holds that what matters is the aggregate happiness; the happiness of everyone and not the happiness of any particular person" (Wikipedia) I am this I guess, and I understand this to mean my ultimate goal in life is to maximize happiness and minimize pain for the largest amount of people, not just myself.

I feel like that is the hero's perspective, one probably Gandhi and a lot of other historic people had, and am very happy I think that way ^_^

I'm just wondering how popular that is compared to the other viewpoints. Which category do you fall into?

Total lack of separation of church and state. I think this guy should create his own faith based committee and have it shot down by the supreme court.

How come it's not explicit what belongs there? And more importantly, how come it's not as popular?

Forum Games / War of the Gods
« on: August 25, 2012, 10:54:05 PM »

Takes place strictly in Ancient Times. There is no perception of time except in the order things happen. Mythology-themed magic allowed, but only for descriptive purposes, not to alter game-play.

You are a god. Your only powers are immortality, and the ability to be both in the real world and the Dimension of the Gods at once. [Allows you to communicate to other gods while being thousands of miles apart.] You lead an empire of men in the real world, but you yourself may not fight. You can duel other gods, but just for fun.

The God King has summoned every god in the world to his throne room in the small Dimension of the Gods. He stands before all of you and announces he will hold a tournament to replace him. Whichever god leads his empire of men to be the most dominant empire of all, will win.

Your first post will complete this form (Keep Editing it to Update Information, start with a little and grow over time to save you a little effort):
-Your Godly Name:
-A Picture of You:
-Name of the Empire You Lead:
-Status of Governmental Structure: [Default: Absolute Rule. Most commonly changed by diplomacy.]
-Most Similar to This Real-World Culture:
-Unique Traits of Your Empire:
-Population Count (Including military): [Good starting amount: 10,000. Do not increase unless you describe how the increase was possible, things do not grow automatically. Also, other players can describe how your population may decrease. In this case, they choose a reasonable # to subtract, then you choose a reasonable # as well. The result is the exact middle of the two propositions. Do not high-ball or low-ball the #s.]
-Picture of Borders on the Map Your Empire Starts With: [May not start where a current Point of Interest is (see bottom). All map pictures must use the current map on the OP, be .jpg, and uploaded on imgur.com]
-Picture of Your Empire's Symbol:
-Pictures of Architecture in Your Empire:
-Pictures of Typical Citizens:
-Pictures of Every Unit Type in Your Army and a List of Units (including how many soldiers are in each unit, a small image pointing to where each unit is located on the map, how much damage each soldier does in the unit [keep it close to 1, use decimals], and any special effects the unit has against enemy units of a certain type [For example, altering their damage by a small decimal] ):
-Milestones Achieved: (see below)

Note: You don't have to focus on military to win. Also, all kinds of diplomacy are encouraged, including vassalism, limited autonomy, mergers and joint rule, etc.

In addition, the God King will give you a one-time-use god power [created by me, not you] sometime after you reach each of these milestones (For the first chain, double posts don't count):
-Empire Description of Greatness [One time, may happen after many edits]
Chain 1:
   -3 Posts
   -7 Posts
   -16 Posts
   -35 Posts
   -74 Posts
-Gloriously Described Battle
-Epically Described Campaign [Worth double or more in god power]
-1-Up Best Described Cultural Achievement [Worth double in god power] (Good way to avoid offensive military action if you're a good writer)
Chain 2 [Difficult. Note: gods are players]:
-3 Qualifying Posts of a Truly Great Story With Characters (1 post must not include gods, 1 post must include gods)
-7 Qualifying Posts of a Truly Great Story With Characters (2 posts must not include gods, 2 posts must include gods) [Worth double in god power]
-16 Qualifying Posts of a Truly Great Story With Characters (5 posts must not include gods, 5 posts must include gods) [Worth triple in god power]
-35 Qualifying Posts of a Truly Great Story With Characters (11 posts must not include gods, 11 posts must include gods) [Worth quadruple in god power]
-74 Qualifying Posts of a Truly Great Story With Characters (24 posts must not include gods, 24 posts must include gods) [Worth 5x in god power]

Battle Rules:
One player describes where they are attacking, and where they are attacking from [Must be reasonably close in order to attack]. That player then describes which units they are attacking with, and which enemy unit each of their units are targeting [It is obvious which units the defending player has because everyone has their units' locations recorded]. Finally they say how many "turns" before the entire army retreats.
The second player then describes which enemy unit each of their units are targeting, and how many "turns" before the entire army retreats.
Either player then calculates the results [Note: special effects are applied wherever they need to be]. For each attacking unit, multiply the # of soldiers by the damage multiplier. Subtract the result from the corresponding defending unit's soldier count. Remember: both players have all of their units attacking some enemy unit [Unless they opted out]. Multiply All of the soldier losses by the # of "turns". Use the # of "turns" that was the lower of the 2 proposed. This means: Units cannot change targets; If a unit dies midway, they still attack and damage their target even when "dead", and in the full strength of the "first" turn [To keep things simple. Need a lore explanation?: A wizard did it -_-].
Important: If the second player does not respond, the battle does NOT take place
Include fluff description, especially if you want a milestone.

Note: If your empire has secrets, PM me to make them official.

Points of Interest [After every time one is captured, a new one appears. Doesn't mean it can't be captured by another player still. Note: Some Points of Interest may move]:
A: Obelisk of Might [Owner: +0.01 damage for each soldier in every unit. May not be Captured until there are at least 2 pages in the topic.]
Coming Soon: Ghost Army, Pirate Armada

Please let me know how I can improve the rules.

Off Topic / Correlation?
« on: August 21, 2012, 12:09:11 AM »
So anyone notice that weed smokers tend to be not as smart and not very good people. inb4hate

I don't touch the subject of legalization. All I'm saying is that there seems to be a correlation. And I'm not dismissing your arguments, I'm just saying that they're not 100% scientific. It seems like it's impossible to find an unbiased source on marijuana. Again, all I'm saying is that there seems to be a correlation. It's funny that people assume that I hold other opinions and are attacking me for that xD

What do you want to be when you grow up? or What are you working on becoming at the moment? or What are you?

I'm working on becoming a helicopter pilot. Vietnam veterans are retiring so there are plenty of jobs. I won't touch the military. I've done 1 hour, only 249 more to go :D. Oh yeah and $60,000-$80,000 -_-

Now I respect yer opinions n all. But for the military people...why? just why?
