Anyway, I decided to eliminate ceilings from the Elevators.  I disable jumping and jetting while in the Elevator, so the only real point of having a ceiling was to keep things from falling into the Elevator.  However, the ceiling adds a noticeable dip in performance, so I no longer use it.  The Elevator will still crush things below it, and you'll be able to build walls and set up Elevator Doors to prevent objects from entering the shaft.  The performance now is very nice.  I whipped up a simple video that I think turned out well.  Here it is:

Pretty good, you didn't make the tunnel part, or the part in back of the red base with the big rock... Maybe its behind the blue base I can't remember.
