How in the hell is having 10 stock modes creative if they're going to be recycled into the next game?

Rewarding players in the form of progression based on performance isn't a new thing. Maybe its application to a multiplayer shooter was somewhat creative, but the concept itself isn't.

...haven't we been over the fact that Doom isn't complicated at all?
not a complicated ideadifficulty of levels minus secrets is debatable, but hidden objects are also...not complicatednot particularly complicated, if you know that simply shooting enemies stuns them if the timing is rightslightly more complicated, considering that it's not exactly intuitive. discovering infighting in Doom was an awesome feeling.not complicated AT ALL. this factors into LEVEL MEMORIZATION, which has been a STAPLE of games with separate stages. you know, like every oldschool game ever that people still enjoy, like Mario or Metroid or Mega Man.

and likewise, over-simplifying a game to a point where it's a mind-numbing experience doesn't make it better either.
i didn't say it was complicated, i said it required more thought than say, call of duty.

i recall reading that it was super prone to overheating, must have just been lies and slander
they fixed that though.
a bunch of overly complicated garbage does not make a game better
damn, all of those ranks, extra game modes, and 70 "different" weapons in call of duty sure made that game better!

lolstory
if one of the things you lumnuts tout is how today's mms have better stories than old games then there's a reason that's not true.

-snip-
it required ammo conversion, you had to look around the map for secrets in order to actually beat the level (it was incredibly hard to beat some levels without secrets), you had to dodge fireballs and know how to stunlock enemies. you had to have the enemies fight each other. the levels were non linear and you could take several paths to get the angle on monsters you needed to kill.

furthermore, you couldn't just run in the middle of a group of enemies and hide behind a crate to regenerate your health. you had to think about what you were going to do before you did it and what consequences it would bring later on.

a-91 is in the same boat as the XM8, it looks cool as hell but is functionally not that great
the xm8 was pretty forgetin' function actually. last i checked in outdid both the m4 and the scar but they scrapped it because of political reasons. it's in service with some PMCs and malaysian special forces.

this is pretty funny because if you look at the game in its core cod was more creative. im just talking about the parentheses here. did doom have 10 multiplayer modes, all sorts of ranks and stuff? no, it didn't, maybe it had levels, but it didn't. it was a shooter.
so what? that isn't the core gameplay, that's a bunch of stuff the developers did to make up for how unbearably simple the core gameplay is. ranks and stuff is just something to give the people who jack off to achievements a way to see how much time they've played the game. the 10 multiplayer modes are irrelevent (unless you want to go there, domination is broken, kill confirmed is broken, search and destroy is probably the only decent one that people play and that isn't tdm).
if you're talking about creativity, then call of duty certainly wasn't the first one to introduce ranks or 10 multiplayer modes.

again, gaming has regressed more than most people think because doom (in my opinion atleast) wasn't the best old first person shooter. marathon had non-linear levels with multiple endings, the first first person shooter to have dual wielded weapons, reloading, and probably one of the top 5 stories in video games.

doesn't change the fact that they're the same functionally.

a submachine gun isn't defined by a fast firing rate and high recoil
okay fine i'll call it close quarters combat assault rifle jesus christ.

this...
doom was a typical shooter just like any other game that is out right now. oh, so you're fighting national socialists and robots, and it's one of the first of its kind? well, how original, isn't it! Just because it's old doesn't make it any more creative than a game out right now
we're not saying it was more creative (even though it is- there are more first person shooters where you fight generic russians or a-rabs than demons) but that it's better than today's state of on-rails no-thought gaming.

the fn2k and famas are not SMGs, what
i didn't mean that literally. they're pretty much hybrids in bf3. they fire incredibly fast with high recoil.

i literally can group all of the assault rifles in bf3 into 3 groups.

the normal assault rifles (m16, m416, ak, probably a few others im forgetting.)
the cqc assault rifles (fn2000, famas, aek)
the heavy assault rifles (g3, an.)

chexguy's argument: doom is better because SHUTTHEforgetUPcigaretteITHAS BIGGERMAPSTHATMEANSITSBETTERf orgetYOU

everyone else: *insert valid arguments here*
ironically the fact is that we actually have arguments and are pointing out specific examples of what is being done right in doom and wrong in cod and everyone else just says "why are you taking this so seriously" "opinions" "nostalgic sperg"

Oh my god how is it even possible for a borderline on-rails campaign to be this buggy and terrible?
*slow clap*

Why the hell would you ask me a question if you're going to insert your own, clearly incorrect, answer? That's the dumbest stuff you can possibly pull. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhetorical_question argumentative skills 101

I bought CS1.6 in 2009, well over 10 years after the initial release of its base game. The sheer amount of graphical improvements within that timeframe didn't stop me from not buying a "prettier" game. forget off with your idiotic assumptions. congrats on being a weirdo, as you have demonstrated, your opinion is pretty much the opposite of the majority and this completely irrelevant to his point. before you say "BUT HE SPOKE IN THE SECOND PERSON," we just established that was rhetorical, and it can of course be logicked out that the "you" was just a general term for people

his opinion is not the opposite of the majority, his opinion is the opposite of your opinion. forget off

The whole "you like to say bleh but it's really blah" stuff seriously shows how much of your head is up your ass. must be one hell of an ass to have him say something so spot on
his opinion is worth stuff, and so is yours.

Where the hell does "dynamism" come up anywhere when referring to Doom as a shooter? You seem to have completely missed the part where Doom as a first-person shooter does what it needs to and is damn good at it too. "Lacked in gameplay?" You expect something more out of a shooter where you shoot things? now you're actively going against yourself, outright stating that Doom is nothing but a generic shooter with nothing interesting to bring to the plate. modern shooters introduce countless innovative gimmicks all the time to give folks something new and interesting to do. Doom is a game in which "you shoot things."

except for the fact that modern first person shooters introduce "innovative" gimmicks that have probably been done countless times before in less well known games to make up for deficiencies in the core gameplay. take for example call of duty. it uses killstreaks, gimmicky perks, and other pretentious "innovations" like the, woah, ability to make a knife only class to make up for the fact that there is literally nothing you have to do but hold down mouse 1 in the general direction of your enemy and hope the rng god puts your bullets where his body is.

"Didn't make up for graphics and design" - you're loving stupid. Your use of tense implies it was graphically lacking upon its release, so I'm going to roll with that. News: it wasn't lacking graphically upon its release. As for design, the "boxy room" argument doesn't loving work when you talk about level design. It's not about the way the level looks, it's about the goddamn layout. timeframe does not change the fact that it looks like it was made in game maker by today's standards. scratch that, games made in game maker look better than Doom did. doom's layouts were not interesting, they were linear with a bunch of padding along the lines of "go get this keycard to open this door where more legendary keycards await you." i'd much rather move in a straight line that back and forth along a boringly wiggly path where i ultimately accomplish the same amount of distance as i would in a straight line.
gg, confirmed for not playing doom beyond the first few levels of episode 1
