You’re gonna get a terrible noise floor by using a mic into a card plugged into your mobo. You really should have a digital audio interface like a Scarlet 2i2 or something. Those will have 48v built into a button. Plus, I almost don’t believe that an XLR input would fit on a PCIe card, does your sound card even have XLR?

I mean electricity isn't a necessity but it sure as forget is useful. The point he's trying to make is that a utility doesn't mean it has to be life critical. Internet is certainly critical, there are swathes of infrastructure built on Internet that needs to be treated as such.
