Help / Non-Steam Blockland on Linux (guide)
« on: August 29, 2014, 11:42:06 AM »
Blockland was surprisingly simple to install on Linux. I followed these steps to install it:

1) Download and install PlayOnLinux. If you're running an Ubuntu distro, you can get it through the software repository. Else, http://www.playonlinux.com/en/download.html has a great deal of download variants.

2) Do sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade. This could take some time, but PlayOnLinux and likely the entire system will function better.

3) Download the Blockland portable installer. This installs all files in the directory the installer is inside of, preventing it from trying to install to a nonexistent C:/Users/ etc folder.

4) Move the Blockland portable installer to a subdirectory in your home folder. If you're running a GUI-based variant of Linux, you can use the file manager utility to create the folder and move the installer there.

5) Start up PlayOnLinux and run BlocklandLauncher.exe through it. You'll only need to do this once, it's setting up the configurations so Wine will work properly.

6) Run BlocklandLauncher.exe and if it's working right a small Wine dialog will come up and then the launcher will open. If the launcher opens, you're good to go - Blockland will install to the directory you've created.

To run Blockland after you've completed these steps, just run BlocklandLauncher.exe - if you're running a GUI-based variant of Linux you can make a desktop shortcut.

Daemon: Thanks for the opinion on the Street one.

I'm thinking of building a third module set - maybe starship (straight/corner/end/T/X bits, wings, reactor rooms, roosterpit etc). I'd welcome ideas for what to make next.

That is really nice looking.

Now all we need is for someone to make a bubbleship mod.

Farad: Neat castle module set, I think I'll try that out. The idea of modular building isn't original to anyone on BL, and it's re-"discovered" all the time.

Bolt the thunderhog: Go ahead and do that! I'd love pics posted here or better yet to join in person and see what you've done with the modules.

I've assembled two different sets of module - one space colony themed, one city street themed. Both are versatile and grid-based, and the space colony one supports 8x height raises/drops - good for cube terrain maps. Links for DL at bottom. For now, enjoy pics.

Use these any way you like - but credit me with making the modules if anyone asks who built it, please.

I'd like to see these used in city RPs, DMs, or whatever you like! Send me a PM if you're using them and I'll gladly stop by your server to take a look if I catch the PM.

Hey, you know, James should get a brain mabe?

That cost is ridiculous. 5.95 a month for twister hats and zombie obbies, among 3-year olds saying "is fun"?

Blockland is better. $20 lifetime fee for endless playability and mod-ability, with usually good players to match.

(If you want something monthly get FunOrb btw. 6 bucks a month for 15+ games.)

Help / Persistences to BLS's?

Hi all. Just have a silly question: Is it possible to convert the old persistences to BLS's? I have lots of cool old maps, and I would like them in the new Blockland.
