General Discussion / Re: Will someone make EW for retail?
« on: March 15, 2007, 05:55:02 PM »
BBC has built in institutional biases.  For instance, on their website for a while after every time they said Mohammed's name they wrote "(PBUH)" after it, for "Peace Be Upon Him".  I can't trust a news source that treats certain topics, like religion, with kid gloves.

Now, with regard to the EW, I hear the following complaints:

1.  "The blocks in Blockland Retail can't be hacked!"

Answer:  That's an issue on Badspot's end.  If he doesn't want to put in an EW, that's fine and dandy, but he should remove any blocks to a modder putting one in - if there's a tradeoff with performance, then that should be a toggle that's up to the modder to decide.

2.  "I don't like people using Blockland as a 3D Modeller!"

Answer:  Why should I care what you like?

3.  "Use your imagination!"

Answer:  Again, why should I?  If you don't like my 'lack of imagination', play on a different server than me.

4.  "There's no skill involved in EW!"

Answer:  Why should I care about whether my creations display skill or not?

5.  "It'll mess up our rating system!"

Answer:  If you don't want to rate something that uses EW, then don't.  That's your problem, not mine.

General Discussion / Will someone make EW for retail?

It'd be nice to have.  I don't want to be limited to building "traditional lego style" things, I liked the idea of using BlockLand like a 3D modeller that's far more intuitive than traditional programs and has a built-in multiplayer component.   And, perhaps even more than that, I don't like being bound by other people's arbitrary conceptions of what BlockLand "should" be.  As good as retail is, an editor wand would help.

Is anyone working on it?

Wow, nice.  I'm not exactly wedded to the "classic" Lego look; Blockland appeals to me because I'll get to build things that others can play with, not only because I'm building them with imitation Lego bricks.

I was obsessed with Legos when I was little, so I do have some nostalgia for the classic bricks, but it's nice that the game will let me break that mold if I feel like it.

BTW, I heard Badspot doing an internship at GarageGames right now because his project is just that awesome... true/false?

Wait, some people simply "can't get" retail?  Is there something I'm missing, or are there people out there that are literally not willing to pay a piddly 20 dollars for an incredible sandbox game?  Heh.

Also, there's nothing "olden-timey" about it, I'm just not used to using leet-speak. ;)  I write a lot more casually here than if I'm trying to get published in a journal or something.

So when retail comes out, will old builds made with the Editor Wand not be importable?

That answers my question perfectly, thank you. :)

Just FYI, 'pragmatism' generally means that something is useful in the here and now, rather than based on an abstract principle or ideal.

A pragmatic reason for using the Editor Wand would be framerate improvement, as Spaceomega mentioned.

There's no real perfect forum for this question.

Not Help, for the reasons you named.

Apparently not this forum, either.

And Offtopic is, I assume, for things that don't relate to blockland - whereas this does.

So, care to offer up a quick and pithy answer to my question so I can be out of your hair? :)

I checked the Help section, and didn't see anything directly pertinent to this.  A whole lot of stuff about how to use the Editor Wand, and its capabilities, but not about why in the gallery builds some people choose to consciously forego it.

My question isn't about how to play the game, it's about people's motivations.

9
Is the reason for not using the editor wand simply to challenge oneself, and/or to achieve a 'classic' aesthetic?  Or are there pragmatic reasons for also choosing not to use it?

Looks cool. :)

Just a thought, as someone not involved who was reading this thread for info - hopefully along with the commercial release and a whole new audience, there'll be a bit stricter moderation on these forums, or at least on the main infoposts? :)
