I was making a blockland clone earlier, though I didn't have a lot of time to do it. Also I really think s&box is a successor to a lot of sandbox games.

I'm going to open up a discord for this project. I'm not sure if it will go anywhere but at least its worth a try.

I might go with C# as the modding language since its seriously powerful and I can potentially do hot reloading on it. I already attempted to do hot reloading with c# on multiple projects before which I think I loading in c# code working.

Modding is a first priority. Though there is some things I would probably have to blacklist by default like file reading and loading outside of the addon, system stuff, etc... to keep the default addons sandboxed and prevent possible malicious code. Though I might make an option where you can allow an addon to completely do those things in case if your doing something more advanced that require that stuff.

Ok I listened to a lot of the replies here. So if I'm going to make this, then I think I'm going to choose Godot as the engine. Why? Because its open source, free, and if something is limiting me or breaks, I can just modify the engine. Another thing is I have read a lot of the engine source code before and its not that hard to figure out what goes on in that engine.

A lot of the games code is going to be first prototype in gdscript, though if there is need for any optimization then c# or GDNative (aka c++), will be used.

Another thing is, modding is the first thing that I'm going to be focused on before anything else. The one thing though I need to decide is what modding language to use which is possibly the most important part. The modding languages I can think about are Lua, Wren(https://wren.io/), C#, Dart (https://dart.dev/, if that can be used for scripting, sandboxed, or can even be embedded at all?)

I'm not sure if this is the right board to post this to. I remember playing Brickadia a few months ago, while graphics are impressive, I don't like the general direction the game is going for. I left a few months ago also so I'm not sure what has been updated or anything has been updated. I'm currently a moderator on the Block Party discord though there hasn't been any activity lately from it sadly.

And I thought to myself, what if I take a spin at making my own block game? Sure, there would be a huge challenge to overcome when making it, but at least its something new to try out to get my programming skills even higher than right now.

So if I were to make a block building game like Blockland, what would you guys want in it? And a few more questions, what should the modding language be and what would be the prefer engine to run the game? Thanks!

maybe a seperate launcher could work

like a server browsing addon that works for B4v21 blockland and new blockland

or it could even be a seperate program

I don't see how v20 people can play v21 servers? A separate program might work for this case?

One of my ideas was to make an addon for v21 that randomly generated a blocky terrain as you move further out.
It would also place a modter version of a map at a specific location where the map maker tells it to go.
The map maker can tell what type of texture and type of stuff that needs to be placed on the modter terrain.

Also I'm fine with players playing v20 maps and I was only giving a warning out of what risk could possibly happen to the player base. I wasn't trying to force anyone to stop playing v20.

Would have to agree with Kyuande here. Splitting up the community into two halves is going to make the Blockland community feel more dead.

Maps are just part of our childhood memories but by splitting the community isn't going to help the player base in Blockland, it's going to make it worse.

I don't see a possible way of making a balance with having v20 and v21 servers on the same master server. I also don't see who would think splitting up the player base is a good idea.

Add-Ons / Re: Blockland Glass 4.1

Not sure if anyone noticed yet but in the "My Add-Ons" tab all the add-ons that start with "Client_" are not listed. I don't know if this is intentional or not?

Are you using the default minigame system or using the Slayer minigame addon?

I can host a dedicated server because I have a VPS. So I can surely test it out!
