General Discussion / Re: older blockland user check-in.
« on: September 04, 2018, 04:12:04 PM »
Does my 3426 ID count as old?

2
imagine trying to build in that
with the limited controls

Actually, working with any kind of 3D-Content in VR, with properly made controls, is much easier than plain old mouse and keyboard. Reasons for that are depth-perception, proper 3D-aiming, being able to use 'hands' and not being a cylinder with a camera tacked on...

I'm planning to buy a VR-HMD anyway so... VR support is a possibility?

Then how about letting the player have only one inventory for items (ignoring bricks here!), at the minimum being a hotbar, which can be extended to any number of slots? The first 9-or-so slots (configurable) can be shown as hotbar on the HUD, with the remainder (also configurable) being hidden like a backpack, accessible by a keypress.

Random concept/mockup image for brick window... (searchbox looks horrible... programmer art ¯\_(ツ)_/¯)

Regarding the inventory discussion, how about...

  • While not in a minigame you have two 'inventories': The toolbelt (same as blockland, holding any kind of item) and the brick-bucket (also same as blockland, holding everything you can 'plant'). Both inventories can be shown/hidden/pinned on your screen.
  • While in a minigame you have one inventory, shown as a hotbar, of arbitrary (custom) size and shape.
  • Accessing the inventory of some object (brick, vehicle, bot, ...) is possible at any time, regardless of minigame.
  • A player can also have an extra 'backpack' inventory; there are no restrictions here.

Better? Suggestions?

-snip- a single brick is between 136 to 141 bits to send over the network -snip- 200,000 bricks would be around 27MB of info.

So... 141 bits per brick is 18 bytes, which multiplied by 200'k gives you ~3.3 megabytes... and that's without clustering and compression techniques. The binary size of bricks is thus a non-issue, unless one lives on a farm somewhere in nowhere.

ah i didnt know that. when i use unity on mac and export to PC there are almost no issues, i thought it would work the same around mb

Sadly, no.

Creating a Mac-Build in Unity requires a Mac with Unity installed and the project loaded.

No-one in the team has a Mac... :(

Due to people asking if the game will run on their toaster, we've made a hardware survey to find out just how many people have toasters for computers.

Go here for the survey/poll: https://strawpoll.com/zwskzhgb

Anybody that is getting a error called 0xc000007b: Replace the file OpenAL32.dll in the games folder with the one from Blockland.

-snip- animation would be automatically mapped -snip-

This is what happens when you 'automatically map' animations between models: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fk755V8bq18

Recently started playing again.

here is a simple format reference:
-snip-

That is really damn easy to interpret. I might just write a small library to parse bls-files...
But it would be written in Java (my primary language, C++-Compilers hate me), which I guess some people here don't like.
Should I?

Done.
You can download the sourcecode here: http://www.mediafire.com/download/o3x96899ej04cma/BLSReader.zip
The reader outputs the parsed data to the console as JSON. Look into the files BLSReader.java and BLSReaderTest.java for more details.
I was too lazy to document the thing, but its so small anybody (even a noob'y-coder) could understand it.

No license on the files contained within the zip-archive, you can do whatever the hell you want with the files!
