Off Topic / Re: how have the last 5 years been for you?
« on: January 06, 2024, 07:51:20 PM »
late and necropost but I've kind of been through the wringer. in the past five years I graduated from high school, took a few college classes, got my first job, and moved out of my dad's house, but a lot of that has been counteracted with things like tag-team covid-19 and neurodivergency killing all of my motivation to try and take classes, my job actually kind of sucking and not taking me on full time/giving me a raise, and my roommate bailing on me so I couldn't pay the rent, forcing me to go through a period of rapidly bouncing between my parents' houses (who have since relocated) and now I'm just kind of stuck in the middle of nowhere with my mom, paying part of her rent until I can get my life back together.

it's been an uphill battle but I really want to get things back into gear so I can finally live life to the fullest and stop being so depressed and traumatized about a bunch of things. one step at a time though

Off Topic / Re: blockland: the community that killed the game
« on: July 14, 2023, 07:51:04 PM »
I'm coming into this thread really late and there's a lot to read here so I'm going to respond as if I was just getting in on the first couple of pages. Apologies if I'm being disruptive here.

The Blockland Forums were a force to be reckoned with for me. I had taken a break from the Chao Island forums (my previous stomping grounds, and one whose former community I still consider close to me) and attempted to truly join in here somewhere around 2014. At the time I had just become a teenager and still in a very awkward phase around self-acceptance, more specifically trying to come to terms with the fact that I am autistic. On the other hand, the internet as a whole was changing; cringe culture was being pushed to the forefront and "edgy" right-wing culture was becoming much more commonplace—and of course, being a very sheltered, misguided teen with no real outlet for his emotions and attempts to fit in, I wholeheartedly bought into that mess, no doubt being indirectly goaded on by the BLF. It got me attention for the first time, it felt like I was actually a part of something.

Somehow I managed to evade the invisible hand of vitriol that permeated the site, but man did I say some choice things on this account. That one April Fool's joke about "4kidschan" comes to mind because that's near exactly what this site was—either that or a tamer Something Awful (pretty sure that's where Badspot got the paywall from). Again, I mostly ended up staying out of things, probably because I was still very clueless, but I did watch the drama from a distance. I thought it was funny. Imagine what it must have felt for those on the receiving end.

I'm still trying to unlearn my mistakes and conquer the seemingly infinite anxiety I have over being myself that I learned from my teenage years and my time here. It's been a long time coming but I'm glad that more of us are aware of the issues that this website caused in the long run.

I mean, if a website is a magnet for types who spew hatred towards marginalized groups and individuals, then threaten and harass them using their personal information, then yeah it probably would be a good idea to drop it, even if the management on the website does not explicitly condone it (though their apparently consistent hands-off approach to these things is a bit of an eyebrow raiser). In contrast, mainstream social media sites are vastly more diluted and are usually accountable to some degree. Twitter might attract some nefarious people who might initially fly under the radar due to the vast size of its userbase, but they eventually get dealt with after the moderators are made aware of it. There's a paradox-of-tolerance issue going on here; if you tolerate the intolerant, then the intolerance will spread. I'd know because the general toxicity of this forum during the mid-2010s directly affected my line of thinking through sheer social osmosis, and boy has it taken me a while to undo the damage.

Yeah, KF could be viewed as a "containment site," but it honestly benefits from being an extremely centralized resource—this results in the negative-influence thing that I described above, its (former) ease of discovery, and making personal information that people really want to keep private trivial to access. If it gets taken down, then people eventually drift: maybe they'll end up latching onto another platform, but when there's a few of them and a lot of people against that few then they won't be there for long. At the very least, forcing the site to go underground will keep the average joe from stumbling on it and spreading its gospel of stalking people that you think are weird.

Also, it's a site founded and run by Iban. What did you think was going to happen? Even the regulars on that site don't like him.

Drama / Re: The posse of Kiwifarms tryhard edgelords
« on: August 23, 2022, 07:36:20 PM »
yeah honestly trying to stir up kiwifarms is ultimately just going to make things worse. speaking from experience as the guy who made that one thread about the kiwifarms thread about this website and promptly got yelled at for it

anyway this site definitely has had a history of everyone being antagonistic towards each other at all times. I feel like it was semi-intentionally cultivated (under an administration that wasn't so cynical the drama boards wouldn't exist), but the departure of pretty much everyone in addition to new account registration kind of made things worse; the bad takes aren't as diluted anymore

oh yeah the whole "forum battle royale" thing. I'm still in it boys, gonna floss until I die

as for me I'm okay. finally got a job (and it pays well), tried college for a semester and a half until covid ruined everything, realized that I probably have ADHD because of that, trying to come into my own, realized that I'm aroace, fun stuff like that. I've definitely changed a ton from whenever I was active here like 5-8 years ago—moved all the way over to the left politically, trying to learn all the social skills that I never caught onto, stuff like that. my life is still a big storm of dumb right now and there's a lot that I should have gotten done by now but slow and steady wins the race. it kind of pains me to see a lot of stagnation here but whatever, people will be people.

either way the decaying state of forums in general is a testament to how much discord sucks; it's convenient but god do I wish that people would use a more publicly accessible platform. I don't know how anyone is able to manage a near constant stream of information instead of just checking on a website a few times a day

I still think about this place sometimes. It's really strange being nostalgic for something but also immediately moving on because it severely corrupted you as a teen, because wow it sure was an endless chasm of toxic waste 75% of the time. It's no wonder that KF was put together by some guy who got kicked off of this site

your donut comes out the same way that it was when you put it in, only that you now realize that your brain cannot comprehend its existence. you die shortly afterwards as all of your neurons fire simultaneously, the donut consuming your soul after you expire
