Where exactly in Ohio? I live near Columbus and it hasn't snowed at all. There's still snow on the ground from a bit ago though.

I didn't get anything special from the crate I opened, but on the plus side I found two hats yesterday: Magnificent Mongolian for heavy and Flipped Trilby for scout, both of which are new with the Australian Christmas update.

It just seems that it would be a much better deal if your are already spending $300 on a graphics card. The 6950 runs cooler and uses less power aswell. I don't know why everyone despises ATI, I have never had a problem.
I've got nothing against ATI, I'd just prefer an NVIDIA card. Also I'm not spending $300 on the card. It's $245, $230 if I go with EVGA's model. If there were a similar discount on the 6950, I'd go for it, but all the cards listed on newegg are $300+.

I would suggest getting the 6950 at this point. At the current it may only perform a little better but with driver updates and what not you will most likely see an advantage in the end.
Not a huge fan of ATI, if I were going to get a card that's $300 it'd be NVIDIA. 470 is cheaper regardless, and will do everything I need it to.
As monocle suggested, going with the i5 would probably be better. Not only is the processor $100 cheaper, it is also about equal as far as gaming performance goes. Going with the i5 would also leave you with a socket 1156 board as an option which would only run you about $120 for a good one.
I'd do this, but I figured that if I got an i7 and a motherboard that would suit it, I'd have plenty of room to upgrade in the future. If price becomes an issue I'll go with an i5 though.
Ram could still be at six but you would be than fine with 4gb or 8gb. I didn't look too at your entire post, but a copy of windows 7 would run you about $100.
RAM isn't too expensive, so I'll stick with 6GB. I think I found a good deal anyway. I didn't include it but yeah I'll be buying a copy of Windows 7 as well.
And if you do choose that card I wouldn't choose an enhanced cooling design. If it is the same price, then go for it. I've been running a 470 on stock with no problems at all. I was also able to get a pretty decent overclock even with the stock cooler.
The difference in price between EVGA's model and MSi's is only $15, so I figured I'd go with MSi's. A cooler computer is always nice, and according to MSi that design is also significantly quieter.

Thanks for the feedback.

Quick update after a bit of browsing:

Motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131665
$35 cheaper than the combo motherboard with mostly the same features.

Video card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127513&cm_re=gtx_470-_-14-127-513-_-Product
Since it seems like MSI knows what they're doing when it comes to cooling, I figured I'd stick with their brand of the GTX 470. According to them, the 2 fan design is both cooler and quieter. This is only $5 more than the two GTS 450s combined. If I want to lower the price a bit I can always buy EVGA's model, which is $10 less than the two GTS 450s after rebates.

RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145222
This RAM has about the same specs for $70 less. Good deal from what I can see.

Hard drive: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136218
After discovering that I haven't used half of the space on my current 500GB hard drive, I realized that I would not need 1.5TB. The reviews for this hard drive make it seem more reliable in comparison to the one in the combo deal, and it is also slightly cheaper.

After ditching the CPU cooler, the total for what I have comes to $1068.92, disregarding shipping and taking into account any mail-in rebates. The combo deal is $1128.00 after any rebates.

Well just looking at those quick I know of a good motherboard for about $30 less and decent RAM for $40 less. The video cards are kind of poo even with two of them. Unless you're running a bajillion video cards and super overclocking 650 watts is good enough for a PSU, and Cooler Master is a reputable brand.

At the moment I'm using the stock cooler with my i7-950 and I've had no problems running it at default settings.
Could you link the motherboard and RAM? Also thanks for clarifying with the CPU cooler. I didn't think I needed anything extra.

As far as video cards are concerned, I checked a benchmark chart and found that the GTS 450 is ranked at number 42, whereas the GTX 470 ranks at number 5. Even with two GTS 450s, I'd be much better off buying a GTX 470.

Thanks for the feedback, greatly appreciated.

Off Topic / Building a computer: A few questions
« on: December 17, 2010, 11:59:06 AM »
As you all know, Christmas is quickly approaching. I was talking with my dad about building a decent gaming rig. He agreed, and I began browsing Newegg for parts and started looking through their "DIY PC Combos". Although most seemed either way too expensive or unsuitable for my needs, I came across one that I thought seemed good. However, I have a few questions about it, and if you guys could help me out that would be great.

The combo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboBundleDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.563968

For the sake of organization I'm going to break my questions down based on individual parts.

Case: No questions or complaints here really. From what reviews I've read about it this is a nice case for the price. If anyone has any other recommendations though I'll gladly take them into consideration.

Motherboard: I'm not completely aware of what makes a motherboard good or bad, but from what I've read other people have been satisfied with this. If anyone has a better suggestion, then go for it.

Video card: This is where the questions begin. In the combo deal I'd be getting two of these video cards, for a total of $270. Would this be worth it? I was browsing through other cards and found that I could buy a GTX 470 for an equal or lower price. Which would be better? From what I've read of MSI's GTS 450, that cyclone cooling system they used works really well and keeps temperatures relatively low compared to other cards, but I'm not sure if having two would be a better decision than having a better card such as one GTX 470.

PSU: I think my only major question about the power supply would be this: would 650W be enough to power everything in that combo? I'm no expert but that seems somewhat low for everything being put into the build. Other combos I looked at had somewhat higher power, but they could just be going overboard.

Processor: No complaints here.

RAM: Again, I'm no expert, but from what I know this seems like decently fast RAM. That being so, would I really need 6GB of it? In my opinion I think I would be fine with 4GB for what I need.

Hard drive: From what I've read of reviews on Newegg, this hard drive seemed like a hit or miss deal. A lot of people complained about it either being DoA or dying shortly after getting it. Regardless, most people who reviewed it had no problems with it, so I'm assuming chances of it failing would be somewhat slim. Either way if anyone has any better, cheaper solutions feel free to give them.

Optical drive: No complaints here. I don't need anything more than a $20 optical drive.

CPU cooler: From what I read of the i7-950, the only complaints people had were related to the heatsink that came with it. This CPU cooler is included in the combo, but do I really need it? I honestly don't think that Intel's default heatsink would be that bad.

That's about it. I'd end up saving $150.90 through the combo discount and mail-in rebates, but it wouldn't surprise me if you guys provided cheaper and better solutions for building a gaming rig. Thanks ahead of time.
