I was playing Blockland yesterday when I thought to myself "I haven't been on the forums in quite a while, I should post something nice"

Off Topic / The intestinal hatred topic
« on: August 23, 2014, 12:36:08 AM »
It's 12:23 AM as I begin to type this and I hate my intestines.

Firstly, this happened: http://forum.blockland.us/index.php?topic=246300.msg7084559 I thought that would be the end of it. But nope, days after I got that sucker fixed up, guess what? I caught a cough. And I discovered that I had another hernia on the other side. So I have another surgery scheduled to fix that one on September 5. Except now that probably is gonna get delayed more. For years I'd been getting this sort of gurgling, ache-y feeling in various parts of my guts. Thought it was just indigestion. Nope, seems I've been dealing with chronic appendicitis, bad enough to cause discomfort, but not bad enough to cause any concern - until yesterday, when my guts waged all-out war on me. Acute appendicitis. Diarrhea, projectile vomiting, the worst pain I've ever experienced all throughout my guts. Initially thought it was food poisoning, until we went to the doc and he declared that if they didn't get my appendix out it'd probably burst and I'd be totally screwed. So last night I had emergency surgery to remove the appendix, which I am now recovering from. There was scar tissue already around the appendix from the ongoing chronic appendicitis before the big episode that led to its removal. They sent it off to a lab, probably to figure out if I was born over radioactive waste or something. I'm also wondering if the surgeon is a part time clown because it feels like my guts were used as balloon animals. And to top it all off they noticed another small hernia in my freaking belly button. I am full of pain meds, am currently a literal gasbag, and have no idea how I'm gonna get to sleep, so of course I decided that I'd whine about it all on a forum for a lego-y indie game I play once in a while.

Discuss intestinal hatred.

Games / LEGO Fusion, real physical building + gaming

I like the town sim, and I'm curious to see what the rest are like. Glad to see LEGO trying new stuff with games. They've had sorta-similar things before that blend the physical toy and games (Cybermaster, Spybotics, Life of George), but this looks pretty neat IMO.

Off Topic / 38 hours of flight(s) coming up, need to stay sane
« on: April 11, 2014, 01:59:38 PM »
I travel a lot. Within the past year I've been all around the US (California, Minnesota, Texas, Maine, and of course everywhere you have to drive through to get from place to place), into Canada (specifically Nova Scotia and Newfoundland), and I've been recently visiting a Mexican town that's composed almost entirely of dentist offices and pharmacies (seriously: http://www.shop-progreso.com/).

But in a few weeks I'll be going to the Philippines, and the flights there and back total up to about 38 hours, not counting layovers at airports. I'm a kinda tall guy who gets cramped and restless if I'm in a minivan for more than an hour. We're not bringing any tech besides my sister's laptop (which runs on Windows 8 and has the worst touchpad on the planet), and I doubt I'd be able to use it to pass the time on the plane anyway. We'll be flying throughout the day (to our internal clocks anyway) so I doubt sleeping is gonna come easily. Not sure if we'll have the room to pack any sizable books. I'm anticipating 38 hours of aeronautical hell. Help? Ideas? Please? :c

Off Topic / Hernia repair surgery tomorrow, tips?
« on: December 01, 2013, 05:46:07 PM »
Going in for hernia repair surgery tomorrow morning. Pretty much everybody on my dad's side of the family has had it done at least once and they've turned out fine so I'm not too worried, and I'll be glad to finally have this whole thing done with, but I still don't know what exactly to expect. Any tips for recovery? I'm gonna need something to do that won't put a whole lot of stress on my gut. No idea what kind of meds I'll be on yet.

Off Topic / Looking for a game engine
« on: November 06, 2013, 01:42:26 PM »
I'm currently using Unity for my main project and I've toyed around with the UDK and Spring, but I have another project I'm thinking of that has some different requirements:

1 - Must be a 3D engine of course,
2 - Must be capable of networked multiplayer,
3 - Doesn't pack the game assets (models, textures, audio, etc) into proprietarily formatted packs, and instead leaves everything open and uses standard formats, thus making it easy for users to create new content and customize the game.

As I mentioned, I'm using Unity for my current project, and I like it, but it wouldn't be very suitable for my next idea - all the assets and scenes in the game are packed very tightly into bundles and mostly converted to proprietary formats, making it difficult to nearly impossible for users to mod the game. It is possible to script your own runtime model importers and such (I think KSP does this, and there's also this thing available for purchase), but it's not very flexible and creating the sort of functionality I'm looking for would just lead to me creating an engine inside an engine.

I've looked around at other engines a bit, and UDK is nice and all, but as far as I can tell it's in the same boat as Unity when it comes to modding support. Spring is closer to what I need when it comes to asset loading and such, but it's also pretty strictly an RTS engine and wouldn't work for this particular project.

I don't need an engine with top-of-the-line graphics capabilities, I just need something flexible and open for modding that's also capable of networking. Can anybody recommend something?

I apologize for any ruined childhoods, but I feel I must share this with the world. Or at least, the Blockland forums.

Off Topic / I need more electro swing music
« on: October 23, 2013, 12:00:44 AM »
I've seen topics asking for suggestions on music, but I'm looking for more of a specific genre, electro swing.

Examples:

Please.

I need more of this.

Off Topic / Programming design stuff?
« on: October 05, 2013, 11:04:57 PM »
Maybe this is an awkward time to post this as I think I saw a topic talking about how somebody hates programmers or something earlier today... Oh well, screw that, I've got a question, and if that topic managed to generate some replies there must be programmers here.

Anyway, I'm looking for good reference, articles... anything really, about the design aspects of programming. Not specific tasks like how to do such-and-such a thing in some certain language ("Hello World" type stuff). I mean stuff about software architecture; thinking out and planning bigger systems. I don't have any trouble with sitting down and writing code (provided I can look up reference stuff to help me through things I haven't learned yet), but I do need to learn more about planning a whole project out so it doesn't turn into a jumbled and rather unorganized mess (which is the problem I'm running into in my projects).

Off Topic / How late do you stay up?
« on: October 04, 2013, 11:21:35 PM »
Quick question: Some people I know think I'm crazy for staying up until 1:30 or 2:00 doing stuff, sometimes even 3:00. But I just don't get tired until then. Am I just weird or what?

I'm 17. It feels a lot like sixteen. I ate artichoke dip and pizza and got a sugar high from a ton of root beer in celebration. Also spent most of the day at a mechanic's shop while we got a ton of stuff fixed and replaced.

meh

I'm actually in a vehicle driving through Las Vegas right now. I swear there's so many lights and pretty colors here it'd give a hardcore raver a seizure.

Off Topic / Need to make a backup of 3TB of data
« on: September 21, 2013, 11:51:45 AM »
It's actually more like 2.5 to 2.7 TB. But I need a backup of it. It's a whole mishmash of stuff, but for the most part it's uncompressed videos recorded with Fraps - in one folder alone I've got 142 videos of LEGO Universe that take up 525 GB of space. Online backup isn't an option, I don't have internet reliable or fast enough for doing anything on this scale (0.24 Mb/s upload speed, 1.5 Mb/s download speed, speedtest.net gives it a grade F and says it's slower than 91% of the US). So I'm probably just gonna use more external hard drives (I have four or five already). But what sort of hard drives? Multiple smaller ones, one larger one? What brand? Multiple brands? Any other solution?
