WHAT IT IS
Doom is a science fiction first-person shooter video game developed by id Software and published by Bethesda Softworks. A reboot of the Doom series, it is the fourth title in the main series and the first major installment therein since the release of Doom 3 in 2004. The game is played entirely from a first-person perspective, with players' taking the role of an unnamed marine, as he battles demonic forces from Hell that have been unleashed by the Union Aerospace Corporation on a future-set colonized planet Mars. The gameplay returns to a faster pace with more open-ended levels, closer to the first two games rather than the slower survival horror approach taken by Doom 3. It also features environment traversal, character upgrades, and the ability to perform executions on enemies known as "glory kills". The game also supports an online multiplayer component and a level editor known as "SnapMap", both co-developed with id Software by Certain Affinity and Escalation Studios respectively.

Multiplayer Maps
Excavation. A modest-sized UAC mining outpost. Watch out for the rock grinder!
Infernal. A mid-sized Hell map with both interior and exterior elements. Lots of platforms and chasms, along with teleporters.
Chasm. This massive map takes you deep below the polar ice caps of Mars. A great place to play Freeze Tag.
Disposal. This smaller map is the main waste processing facility for the UAC research and residential complexes.
Unsurprisingly, it's full of radioactive slime.
Helix. This is where they experiment on demons and develop advanced weaponry. Which, naturally, makes it perfect for a
quick round of Clan Arena.
Perdition. Disjointed and sadistic, this ancient arena is populated by the agonized moans of unfortunate souls who have suffered within its realm.
Sacrilegious. Set within a fracture of Hell, this map offers clear lines of sight. Move fast... or die faster.
Heatwave. An industrial UAC facility with glistening halls that will soon be slicked with human (and demon) blood.
Beneath. Before being beamed to Earth, the energies of Hell are harnessed in this symmetrical and cavernous location.

WEAPONS
The weapons are intended to be a mix of futuristic and conventional weaponry. Within the E3 2015 demo, there seemed to be 8 weapons included. Screenshots and trailers have revealed evidence of more weapons. Leaks of the Game have revealed there are some 27 weapons in the final game.
Some weapons are not shown!BFG9000 - One of the most iconic weapons in the franchise, it seems to be similar to its Doom 3 incarnation, as it can be charged up (though in the E3 showcase, it did not have its own ammo counter). It has a big damage radius like the original Doom. Available as a power weapon in Multiplayer
Burst Rifle - Repeating rifle that fires three-round bursts. Only in Multiplayer.
Chaingun - A rotary machine gun with a very fast rate of fire, but requires a short wind up before firing.
Chainsaw - An insta-kill weapon that requires fuel pick-ups in campaign, and generates ammunition upon killing in multiplayer. Has an ammo counter of 6, with stronger enemies needing more ammunition to kill. Available as a power weapon in Multiplayer.
Gauss Cannon - A weapon that accelerates large caliber, steel flechettes to incredible velocities through a magnetized chamber resulting in extreme accuracy and power. Available as a power weapon in Multiplayer.
Heavy Assault Rifle - An automatic rifle which features a scope that turns the weapon into a semi-automatic rifle. It also has a 'mini-rockets' alternate fire which gets rid of the scope, but in turn allowing the player to fire a barrage of fast firing rockets. Holds 60 rounds.
Hellshot - A semi-automatic hell-energy weapon. Secondary fire can cause flame damage over time. Only in Multiplayer.
Pistol - Directed-energy handgun which is the weakest weapon in the game. Has unlimited ammo. Only in campaign.
Plasma Gun - An automatic directed-energy weapon that fires off a stream of concentrated plasma. Holds 150 rounds.
Rocket Launcher - One of the weapons with a slower fire rate, it fires off rockets to cause massive damage to whatever meets it face to face, and also causes splash damage, dealing damage to those close to the explosion, perhaps even the player. Holds 16 rockets.
Static Cannon - Multiplayer-only weapon that charges up to deal more damage as the player moves around. Only in Multiplayer.
Super Shotgun - A more powerful version of the shotgun, which requires a reload after every shot. Holds 20 shells. Shares the same ammo pool as the combat shotgun.
Vortex Rifle - A beam sniper rifle that can charge energy when zoomed in. Only in Multiplayer.
MULTIPLAYER
Game modes
Developer id Software has teamed up with Certain Affinity to develop the multiplayer part of Doom. It is not the first time Certain Affinity has partnered with a well-known studio to work exclusively on the multiplayer segment of a game; the studio has contributed to the multiplayer development of Halo: The Master Chief Collection, Call of Duty: Ghosts, and Halo 4, among others.
The following game modes for multiplayer have been confirmed:
TDM (Team Deathmatch)
Clan Arena
Freeze Tag
Domination
Warpath (modified King of the Hill, moving control point)
Soul Harvest
Players can pick up a demon rune that spawns randomly on a timer during multiplayer and can become a demon for a limited amount of time.
The player can not pick up health bonuses or other power-ups while playing as a demon.
Playable Demons
The Revenant
The Baron of Hell
The Mancubus
The Prowler
The Harvester (Upcoming DLC)
Power Ups
Players can also pick up power ups. Confirmed power-ups include:
Quad Damage (Also available in Singleplayer)
Invisibility
Regeneration
Haste (Also available in Singleplayer)
Mods
A weapons-mod system exists in the game that allows the player to customize their weapons. For instance, the rocket launcher can be equipped with a remote detonator that allows them to trigger the rocket's blast at will or to lock on to a target and fire three short burst at it.
CAMPAIGN
Plot
The reboot has been stated to be an origin story. The game is set on Mars, with a UAC facility being invaded by the forces of Hell. The demons have been constructed through corrupt UAC experiments. The game starts as an unknown man -- Doomguy chained to an altar, awakens in a UAC basement on Mars, and realizes that something is amiss, escapes imprisionment and gains his Praetor Suit. Making his way across the Martian surface, he enters an industrial building that houses a satellite. After re-aligning the dish array, he hopes to learn the source of the demonic invasion, and preps himself to stop it.
Dr. Olivia Pierce is a/the antagonist of the game, apparently responsible for enabling Hell's invasion.
Gameplay
The game is fast paced, with sprinting, double jumping, and mantling being possible. The Doomguy is faster than almost every demon in the game, and it is intended that movement is the key to both offense and defense. No reloading mechanics are present (there are ammo pickups however) nor regenerating health (instead possessing health packs along with armor to reduce damage taken). In the campaign, players are not limited in the number of weapons they can hold, while SnapMap has a two-weapon-limit. The weapons are displayed on a weapon wheel, with time slowing down significantly while doing so. The gameplay is intended to harken to the classic games in the series. A "karate system" is featured where the player can engage demons in melee combat. Fatalities, also known as Glory Kills, feature in a manner similar to Brutal Doom, with the enemy glowing blue when available to do so, and orange when you are close enough to execute. Keycards are used to open doors. Weapons can be modded, as well as the Praetor Armor.
MAIN CHARACTERS
MainThe "Doom Slayer"In this reboot, this silent protagonist is referred to by Hell's forces as the Doom Slayer; a legendary warrior and sole surviving member of an order of knights known as the Night Sentinels, tasked with protecting their home and deities, the Wraiths, from Hell. Contrary to previous incarnations, this version is even more vaguely characterized: the marine is never seen nor heard other than from first person, and other than an early shot of the marine's arm revealing a Caucasian skin color and the game lore texts referring to its gender as a "he", practically no details are revealed.
Prior to the game's events, the Doom Slayer and his brothers-in-arms were the protectors of a land known as Argent D'Nur, until a member of the Sentinels betrayed them in exchange for the resurrection of his dead son, who ended up brought back as the Icon of Sin (the final boss in Doom 2). The land would then be consumed and became Hell's energy resource for traversing across dimensions. Enraged, the Doom Slayer nearly tore all of Hell down as he defeated countless waves of demons and Titans, wearing a green suit of enchanted power armor and light grey helmet gifted to him by a "wretch". Eventually, the Doom Slayer was sealed away in an enchanted sarcophagus by the terrified remainder of Hell's inhabitants until he was collected by UAC Mars Director Dr. Samuel Hayden, keeping him sealed in his private labs as they reverse-engineered his equipment.
The game's events start as he is awakened from his sarcophagus sometime after a Hell invasion on Mars occurred. Hayden from afar would make various attempts to persuade the Doom Slayer into working together, as the latter consistently brushes him off. After defeating Hell's forces on his revisit of Argent D'Nur to stop the portal to Mars from remaining opened, the Doom Slayer was inevitably duped by Hayden into retrieving a mystical artifact from his land that can control "Argent energy". Hayden, finding it pointless to convince him of his cause to further benefit Earth and the UAC's work, teleports the Doom Slayer to an undisclosed location - leaving the game on a cliffhanger.
The Doom Slayer, despite being the most brutal of the Doom protagonists by far, is also shown to be the most traditionally heroic; he is distrustful of Hayden due to his "ends justifying the means" philosophy and goes out of his way to show compassion to the sentient AI VEGA, copying him to a personal drive when told by Hayden to destroy his main body. He also sought to protect humanity from Hell at all costs, by destroying all of humanity's supply of Argent energy which had solved Earth's energy crCIA, as it was actually obtained via a portal to the corrupted ruins of Argent D'nur.
Dr. Samuel HaydenDr. Samuel Hayden is a character in the 2016 Doom, a high-ranking UAC official who oversaw the Argent energy research projects at the UAC Mars Base. After an unknown incident during construction of the facility's Argent Tower which caused him to develop brain cancer, he was forced to replace almost the entirety of his body with cybernetics. He was first officially shown by id Software in the game's official launch trailer greeting the Doom marine after he awakens from an apparent slumber. In exclusive footage released by video card manufacturer NVIDIA to demonstrate the performance potentials of the then-new Vulkan graphics API in id Tech 6, he can be heard acting as an advisor to the marine, speaking about Olivia Pierce, to whom he is now an enemy. He states that he had hoped she would "rise above their influence," referring to the demons from Hell which she instead unleashed.
Dr. Olivia PierceOlivia Pierce is a character in Doom responsible for the invasion from Hell who functions as the main antagonist for most of the story. She is first seen as a hologram recording examining the Doom Slayer's containment box, and is heard over the intercom in the Mars base during the opening stages of the game. She could also be seen on the monitor talking to the Doom Slayer.
Along with Samuel Hayden, she was responsible for working with Hell to advance human civilization within the UAC. She made a "deal with the devil" and gave Hell cybernetic enhancements for the demons there. However, she was unable to control the great power and tried to bring their world into this one. She was later shown escaping through one of the hell portals with an argent energy tube.
By the time you meet her at The Well, she is shown severely weakened. She realizes Hell has deceived and betrayed her and mutters her last words to the Doom Slayer, "They promised me so much." The demonic forces of hell then strike her with a crimson lightning bolt, knocking her out and transforming her into the Spiderdemon.
