Off Topic / Solid State (Album) by Jonathan Coulton
« on: September 12, 2017, 08:46:36 PM »

Jonathan Coulton, the artist behind such songs as Still Alive, released a new album earlier this year: Solid State. I wanted to share this album with the community. As stated on his website:
Quote from: Solid State Website
Why yes, it IS a concept album about the internet, trolls, artificial intelligence, and how love and empathy will save humanity!

Off Topic / So, anything going on here?

I don't look at Blockland often anymore, but I still see people running it through Steam a lot. Have I missed anything? :cookieMonster:

The other day, I was discussing how Glee had stolen Jonathan Coulton's cover of Baby Got Back. Turned out the individual was just young enough to have no idea what the song was. While getting examples, I decided to look up the song on Wikipedia - curious about any random facts - and stumbled upon this relatively recent event. As it turns out, the event was recorded and placed on Seattle Symphony's official YouTube channel, even. It was... interesting.

Here is the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w59e20ijOpE&t=2m41s (URL starts you RIGHT as he starts singing, but there's a bit before that)

As suggested, this is Baby Got Back, instrumental performed by Seattle Symphony with Sir Mix-a-Lot singing. He invited any women who wanted to onto the stage to dance during the performance. Pretty insane.

I downloaded Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for Windows and ran it on my WD Black Series WD4003FZEX harddrive. I selected the Quick Test. When the test started, the drive revved heavily, with a loud, unsettling noise for probably 10-15 seconds. After that, it continued to make a low and unusual sound periodically. When the test finished, the program said it had passed. However, I doubt a harddrive should EVER had as intense as it did.

I need to know if that was... normal... If the diagnosis tool immediately revving the drive like that is normal. I mean, right before the test started, it stated to close all programs using  the drive to avoid data loss. You'd think it'd warn about potential, desk-vibrating spin-up... According to WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostics User Manual, it isn't for diagnosing mechanical problems, so just because it somehow passed the SMART test doesn't mean it is fine... And considering no harddrive should sound like a grinding-stone dreidel, I... I'm afraid.

Games / Real Lives 2007 - Help with "Runtime error 216 at 00403D66"?
« on: September 27, 2014, 11:48:37 PM »
I have been attempting to run Real Lives 2007, but running into this error whenever I attempt to run it. I've found several references to the error in relation to the game, and countless others to the error itself in general. Microsoft blames the error in a virus - however, I do not believe I am infected. Furthermore, reports of the error in relation to the program have yielded people who obtain the error after various scans for the virus. Out of all mentions of runtime errors, I have yet to find a valid solution. The closest I got was mention to update Visual C++ 2010. However, Microsoft actually provides an older version of 2010 than I have, which stops the installer from working anyway. On the point of it being a virus, it is called Subseven/Sub7.

I have several very large, uncompressed video files I want to reduce the filesize. I need a program which can achieve compression with minimal quality loss. I know it can depend on encoders and such, but for the time being I'm hoping there are general programs I can try before getting into those specifics.

Off Topic / Recommend a good hard drive replacement?
« on: March 22, 2014, 06:55:32 AM »
I need a good replacement hard drive. I tried two harddrives, not including a replacement for one, all of which are faulty to an extent. I've been loading the replacement one with data, but it is defective in that is is rougher and wearing down. Computer repair place that put it in for me said it wouldn't last, and considering the noises it makes when I try to use it sometimes, I'd be inclined to agree.

All that aside, I was thinking I'd just get an external harddrive to dump bulk files I care about but don't immediately need onto. Could anyone recommend one? I do have a budget, but firstly I want to see general opinion of good, LARGE external harddrives. From there, I'd narrow it down by price range and such.

This was kind of hastily written, but I have a bunch of things I need to do by the 25th, and I've been on 10GB of this 1TB drive for months now... Horrible, just HORRIBLE.

Off Topic / Facebook XMPP - Can anyone help me with the XMPP?
« on: March 05, 2014, 08:15:00 PM »
At the end of last month, Facebook Messenger for Windows and Firefox announced service would end March 3rd, 2014. While it didn't end immediately on this date, it appears to have stopped functioning within the last few hours.

In response, I installed Pidgin and set it to log into Facebook XMPP. However, there are some missing features I'm appreciate having, and I was hoping someone could help me see if the features are there and just not supported yet. If anyone understands XMPP and could help me comb through the available features for what I'd like to bring to my Pidgin, could you PM me?

This page appears to be about it, although this specific page seems more general and I'm not sure how I'd look for anything more specific: https://developers.facebook.com/docs/chat/

Off Topic / TwitchPlaysPokemon - You control the game - via Twitch!
« on: February 14, 2014, 03:12:43 AM »
This Twitch.tv channel came to my attention earlier. This is a stream of either Pokemon Red or Blue. However, the interesting part is: YOU control what happens. The game takes commands from the chat. The chat says controls, and valid controls are displayed in the stream and taken. Of course, this is extremely hectic, but nonetheless hilarious. If you want to watch, or even participate, here is the link:

I am trying to match two types of URL in these formats:

http://example.com/First/Second/File.Ext
http://example.com/First/Second/Third/File.Ext

While I could simply encompass the URL by its containing text, I require the individual portions of the URL to rearrange. As such, the regular expression must match each portion. Another issue is the URLs are all received on a single line, so optional text ((.*?/)? for Third/) causes it to match across to the next URL. I also don't have the option of running multiple scans, so I can't just extract all full URLs and go from there sadly.

So basically, I need to retrieve First, Second, and if Third exists, that as well. Otherwise, don't keep looking for Third into the next URL.

Games / How do you sign out of Windows Live within Skype?
« on: December 30, 2013, 11:34:58 PM »
I have recently linked my Skype and Windows Live accounts. I am curious if there is a way to log out of Windows Live without logging out of Skype as well. Apparently it is possible, but the only topic mentioning it is completely unhelpful: http://community.skype.com/t5/Live-Messenger/logout-windows-live/td-p/1436594 Essentially "How do I do this?" "Figured it out." without HOW.

Off Topic / 888poker - What kind of commercial is this?
« on: December 29, 2013, 07:31:32 PM »
I was sitting here a few minutes ago, and happened to hear part of a commercial behind me that baffled me. I decided to look it up, and discovered they feature the commercial online: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U-chVn3NCRQ

The part that struck me, ignoring the rest so far just because it got me so hard, was "award-winning software." WHAT software? What was award winning? The button interface because it is the base for most button code across everywhere? What?

If you have any other insane commercials involving technological claims, you could also post them.

Off Topic / Help - Skype utilizing maximum CPU
« on: December 20, 2013, 10:16:14 PM »
Two days ago I opened Skype and noticed it was taking up all the CPU on one of my cores (Quad-core, so 25% cpu). It was slowing down my computer, so I shut it down. I looked it up, and this problem has persisted for several months. However, the solutions are very inconsistent.

Some reports blame Avast and show where to add exclusions. However, this did not work for me.
Some reports blame Skype constantly trying to check download servers, and show where to add blocks in hosts. However, this did not work.
Some reports blame default browsers (Programs like to piggyback the default browser for displaying web content), and say to change it to Internet Explorer. However, this did not work.
Beyond this, I have also tried uninstalling, renaming the configuration folder to force refresh, and reinstalling. This also did not work.

The last primary reason involves Skype trying to update, but being broken due to a newer version having been installed. However, these reports don't make sense. The problem started around 6.3 and I've seen up to 6.9 blamed. However, I was using 6.10 and 6.11 was available but not updated. AKA I did not get a newer version for the problem to occur. Furthermore, installing the newest version didn't fix it. I'd rather not downgrade and risk some errors on Skype's servers, but if no other solutions are found, I suppose I'll have to try.

Help would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.
