Games / Fable: The Lost Chapters is getting an HD remake.
« on: June 06, 2013, 08:57:58 AM »

Here's a forget-ton of obligatory sources

Pretty old news now, but nobody's brought it up here yet.
Fable: The Lost Chapters, that old 2005 action-RPG from Lionhead Studios, is getting an HD overhaul, under the title of Fable Anniversary. Achievements, new lighting, new facial animation system (holy stuff does it need it), and all that jazz. I personally loved this game with a rather unhealthy chunk of my heart, and an HD remake is something I've been wanting for a while. I really can't wait for it; now I know Peter Molyneux has an unsettling habit of being over-ambitious, but I don't really see how he could forget this one up. I don't know. Maybe I'm just being a fanboy.

Edit: Here's the teaser.

Keith Ratliff, manager for the popular YouTube channel FPSRussia, has been found possibly murdered.
By a gunshot to the head.

Well, this makes Kyle Myers himself look a little bad, huh?

EDIT: This all might just be a hoax to attract attention to the FPSRussia channel. Don't be surprised.

Games / Drunkenness in video games [Rant]
« on: January 03, 2013, 03:42:27 PM »
I often find myself judging RPGs by the effects of in-game alcohol and drugs.
There are three games I've played that got drunkenness right: Red Dead Redemption, Grand Theft Auto IV and Fable: The Lost Chapters.

-Grand Theft Auto IV's drunkenness had the player in what can best be described as a half-ragdoll state, with the character stumbling around drunkenly and making it very hard, if very entertaining, to stay upright. The camera swings back and forth and there is heavy motion blur, confounding the player even more. Drunk driving is near-impossible, with the vehicle swerving back and forth of its own accord. It will also attract the police.

Grand Theft Auto IV is the standard by which I judge all in-game drunkenness.

-Being drunk in Red Dead Redemption is much the same as in GTA, but without the wild camera swinging. This makes it, in my opinion, more fun than confusing to be drunk. Also unique to RDR is that the player will occasionally go unconscious, focusing on a stock-still Marston laying in a heap on the floor for a few minutes before getting up again.

-Being drunk in Fable: The Lost Chapters is an entirely different experience. It takes a few beers, but eventually the screen will begin to go blurry. As the drinks continue (only a Hero could hold 50 skins of beer, I guess) the screen waves and ripples around, causing great disorientation. Movement may or may not be altered.

Red Dead Redemption is probably my favorite game for drunkenness. While not exactly realistic, it's hella fun to mess around stumbling around like a handicap and messing up everyone's day while you fall all over the place.

Some games, while having alcohol, don't employ drunkenness correctly, if at all. These games are mainly Fallout 3, Oblivion, and Skyrim, that I've played.
I just don't know why Bethesda can't grasp this. Instead of getting you drunk, alcohol grants simple effects like any other potion. I wish desperately at the announcement of each new TES game that you can get drunk, and then you can't, and then I'm really, really sad.
What's to enjoy in draining a big flagon of mead over a dead dragon if it'll only "restore 30 stamina"? I don't binge drink all the alcohol in my inventory for some extra stamina. I drink it to get absolutely slammed.
Fallout 3 took a step in the right direction with alcoholism, giving the player negative effects for withdrawals when he didn't drink often enough, but that was only a step.

So that's the end of my rant. What games have you played that did drunkenness really well? Do you like getting drunk in games? Do you like getting drunk in real life? Are you a soccer mom who thinks that getting drunk in video games will make you an alcoholic in real life? I hope not. Discuss being a drunken slobbering fool in video games. What's your favorite pasta? Mine's fettuccine.

So naturally a lot of people are going to hate it.

Unreal World(URW) is a game 20 years in the making -- as described here. So far it's quite fun if a bit slow. The learning curve, so far, is a lot less steep than, say, Dwarf Fortress. Essentially, you're put in Iron-Age Scandinavia and made to find your way in the rough wilderness, and you're free to forge your own path however you see fit. You could become a hermit, trader, fisherman, hunter, mercenary, etc. Every action is done from the skills menu, so something like casting a fishing net or building a fire is easy if you know what you need to do it. Character creation is a little unorthodox, and can take a while, but it's worth it once you get further into the game.

The payment plan for this game escapes me. You can get a free version, or you a paid version. The differences between the two so far have only manifested themselves to me as extra starting scenarios.

Games / So THAT's the problem with WarZ.
« on: December 19, 2012, 02:46:19 PM »
I've been hearing a lot of talk about The WarZ lately, and very little of it has been good. I understand it was recently taken off of Steam by popular demand. I can find nothing detailing just why people hate it so much. What's the problem? Is it just that it's a terrible game?

From this, you can see that I'm an off-topic whore. It's been a good 9000.

Off Topic / Help me identify some tools in this multitool. (Image heavy)
« on: November 10, 2012, 06:32:16 AM »

So I found this multitool buried in my drawer. It's from my days in Boy Scouts, as I can glean from the fact that I found it with a badge and some kind of certificate, and the small fleur-de-lis printed on the side.
It was part of a two-piece knife set, which also included a smaller one in a neat little box. It has a knife, saw, scissors, can opener, screwdriver, corkscrew, nail file, and keyring.
But I also noticed some tools in this set that I don't quite recognize. I'd like some help identifying them.
The first:

This one cannot be a saw blade, because the saw blade that is included is actually sharp. This is just a blunt... thing. It's like half of a crab shell cracker or something.

The second:

It looks like a can opener, but there already is one on the multitool, shown in the first picture next to the scissors.

The third:

This is merely a stick with a hole at the top. Not one sharp edge, or anything. Maybe some kind of lockpick? I don't know.

The fourth and final:

This one is by far the most puzzling.
It's a stick.
No holes, no edge, just a vague knife-like shape. But what kind of practical knife would be perpendicular to its handle?

I'd really appreciate some help identifying these so I can maybe use it up to its full potential.

Off Topic / Lance Armstrong stripped and banned

...Of Tour de France titles and from the Tour de France, respectively

In what is turning out to be a bad year for anybody named ArmstrongWhat, too soon?, 41-year-old bicycle racer Lance Armstrong has been stripped of all of his Tour de France titles and banned for life from the event, due to findings of performance-enhancing drugs in his system.
Lance says he will not be resigning from bicycling, under the premise that he has never used performance-enhancing drugs in his entire career, and that he has never once failed a dope test.

I should also mention that he resigned from the LiveStrong campaign a few days ago. Jeez.

Discuss conspiracies against people named Armstrong.

EDIT: Guess I should add a source, shouldn't I?

EDIT EDIT: So he hasn't resigned from the campaign, he's just "Stepped down as chairman".
Which may or may not mean exactly the same thing.
