Help / Low framerate without 100% utilization
« on: August 31, 2012, 11:25:24 AM »
What happens: When I run blockland with shaders maxed out, my framerate in game is low even though my GPU nor CPU are running at 100% usage. I know its not a CPU bottleneck because the main thread blockland is running on is nowhere near using an entire core. Yes I am aware that blockland is not multithreaded and wont run on all 6 cores, but utilization is still less than one core can provide.

Here is a screenshot of what happens

You can see here that the framerate is topping out at ~31 FPS while GPU utilization is only reaching 80%

I did a little bit of looking into the problem myself and came across AMD's GPU Shaderbrown townyzer.
I don't have a lot of experience with graphics/shaders, but from my messing around with it I was only able to get blockland's GLSL shaders to compile and run with Catalyst 11.7, 11.8, and 11.9. If I try compiling on anything newer, it tells me "Hardware Compilation failed". The 11.9 version of the catalyst drivers are almost a year old at this point.

Computer Specs: AMD Phenom II x6 1100T, 16 Gb ram, AMD 5830 + Catalyst 12.8 Drivers, Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit

Forum Games / Free server hosting
« on: September 15, 2011, 12:52:48 AM »
Well, my topic in general discussion got a surprisingly small number of replies, so I am reposting here. I'm not sure if this really belongs in this section, but whatever. I will be open to hosting for at most 4 more people. If you are interested, read the original post here.

General Discussion / Free Server offer -Closed for application
« on: September 08, 2011, 05:25:06 PM »
Some notes:

  • I'm looking for people with popular builds/servers that don't have the means to host for many people
  • I will NOT consider such requests as: "IM 10 AND I CANT GET MY SERVER WORKING HOST FOR ME PLZPLZPLZPLZ
  • If I end up hosting for someone else, I will use my own key to host the dedicated server
  • The server is an AMD dual core @ 3.5 GHz, and 4 GB of ram. Should be enough for even a large server
  • I don't have time to build/moderate the server
  • The server is located is on the US east coast, but latency to other parts of NA should still be acceptable.
  • I might be able to host more than one server with a decent amount of people.
  • Your server will have the prefix "Starcraftman's" because I will use my own key to host.

Alright, for the next 3 months I will be living in the dorms at my university and have a spare computer and a TON of upload/download bandwidth with which I can host a server.

Because I don't have to pay extra for electricity I can do this for free, so I am looking for either a good idea for a server to host, or for someone who could use a server with a large capacity for huge builds, competitions, clan builds, or whatever.

Q: Why do this for free?
A: Blockland was the first real sandbox game I enjoyed. I played the alpha since 2004, and then retail when it was released. I love the game and the community (mostly), so I want to give something back.

Q: Why should I trust you with my server?
A: I don't know, you tell me :D

Post ideas or questions. I'll try to answer as many questions as I can.

List of people/groups considered so far
  • CVRAY Didn't respond
  • RedGajin -hosted
  • Arch/Koloce + Nyx clan -hosted
  • Big Brother -hosted
  • Conan -hosted
Waiting list
  • 1. Trogtor
  • 2. BlazingDragon

Also for bragging purposes: WARP SPEEEEEEEEED

Gallery / Working 12 hour clock
« on: August 05, 2010, 05:49:07 PM »
This a working 12 hour clock I made using events. I have never seen someone else make a working clock in blockland so I thought I would give it a try. The controls to set the time are inside, along with start, stop, and reset buttons. *Note: if you manually set the hour timer above 12 hours it gets messed up so you need to press the hour reset button if you do. Other then this there are no other bugs I know of.
You can also have many other clocks at once that base their time off the main one by naming print bricks in this order (from left to right) hours, hour, minutes, minute, seconds, second. It is also possible to load this into other maps and rotate and move it with the duplicator tool because it handles directional relay events when bricks are rotated so there are no errors when doing so.
*edit: the timescale of the server will effect the clock, and it does not synchronize its time to your computers clock, you have to do that manually.

Off Topic / Information on old electronics.
« on: May 17, 2010, 10:09:45 PM »
Well, I have just come into the possession of a very old and obscure piece of electronics equipment. It is a RF Standard Signal Generator Model 295C, made by Federal Manufacturing and Engineering Corp, Brooklyn 5, NY. Even with all that information I have been unable to find ANYTHING about it because from the documents that came with it, I can tell it was made at least before 1956. I also know that the "Federal Manufacturing and Engineering Corp" no longer exists, and I cannot find any information about it either. I doubt anyone here has any information on it, but if you can direct me to someone or a forum that could help me with this, I would greatly appreciate it. Also pics attached.

Suggestions & Requests / UPnP, End of port forwarding?
« on: November 10, 2009, 03:07:52 PM »
I have noticed that one of the most common problems that people have with blockland is port forwarding and hosting a server. I was wondering if it would be possible to implement UPnP into blockland/torque. For those of you how don't know, routers that support UPnP automatically forward the ports for programs that also have UPnP, so in short it means automatic portforwarding.  I was wondering if it would be possible to implement UPnP into blockland/torque. If it could be implemented it would greatly simplify hosting servers. What do you think?

Games / Modern Warfare 2: No dedicated servers
« on: October 22, 2009, 10:09:45 PM »
I know this is somewhat old news unless you have been living under a  rock, but in case any of you haven't heard, there will be NO dedicated servers for the PC version of Modern Warfare 2. Anyone considering purchasing Modern Warfare 2 for PC should seriously reconsider, because this is unacceptable.
