Games / Nuclear Throne - FLÄSHYN
« on: March 15, 2014, 08:10:57 AM »

(please note the images and info on the steam page are outdated)

Nuclear Throne is the latest game from Vlambeer, the geniuses/indie masterminds behind Ridiculous Fishing, Super Crate Box, and Luftrausers, and it's out as an Early Access alpha, available on Steam for $12.99, or from the website (Steam key included). It's due for release on PS4 and Vita once it's done, and the developers will see if they can port to Mac and Linux (notoriously difficult for games built in game-maker) at a later date.

It's a twin-stick shooter roguelike-like-alike (think of Gauntlet with guns and mutants), with bullet hell elements, and some Hotline Miami style twitchiness. The idea is simple, kill enemies, pick up bullets, weapons and health to stay alive, and collect the little rods of plutonium they drop in order to level up your character and buy perks between levels. There are a couple of small twists to keep things fresh too, the most notable being you're only allowed to carry two weapons at once, making switching weapons often enough to ensure you don't run out of ammo paramount to success. There are also several different characters to pick from, each with their own unique ability, ranging from an incredibly useful shield, to lowered max HP for increased XP gains and the ability to use "explosive revenge" (that is, BLOW UP ALL ENEMY CORPSES ON SCREEN). Anyway, the ultimate aim is simple; finish enough levels, and sit the Nuclear Throne*. Easier said than done though, as like any good roguelike. Also, since the game isn't finished, there is no Nuclear Throne. Once you finish 6_1 (Labs), the game loops and things just get loving insane.

The pixel art/animation/character designs and music are as good as you'd expect from Vlambeer, and likewise the core gameplay doesn't disappoint either. The audio and visual feedback makes all the weapons in the game, (and there are many, many weapons in the game) incredibly satisfying to use, there's a great variety of enemies and bosses to test your mettle against, and well, despite being in alpha and a liiitle bit rough, it already feels like a fairly complete package. Every update contains new content. Saying that, there's forgetton of content still in development and being added on a weekly basis: more levels, types of enemies, new characters, and all sorts of secrets and assorted craziness are planned before the game is "out" proper.

If you don't wanna spend your money right away, play the old prototype from the Mojam bundle! (not as good)

You can follow along with development on these streams as well! (but for now, the guys are at GDC, so no development is going on at the moment.)

Games / I don't know which Fallout game to buy.
« on: January 20, 2014, 12:20:54 PM »
I'm trying to decide if I should buy Fallout: 3 or Fallout: New Vegas. I just can't decide! NV has that desert feel, and 3 has that ruined apocalypse feel - I love both!  So I have these questions to ask:

Which wasteland is more interesting to explore?
Which one has more interesting encounters?
Which has better writing?
Which has more memorable characters?
Which has better gunplay and combat?
Which one is more immersive?
Which one has more enemies?
and which one has more companions?

Please share your opinions.

Games / Alien: Isolation
« on: January 08, 2014, 05:01:04 PM »
Alien: Isolation < info here

I never heard of this game before, but now it's popping up everywhere. Being a huge Alien fan, I'm still a bit angry at Aliens: Colonial Marines, but I have hopes for this one. For starters, it's based off of Alien, not Aliens - so you have no weapons and there's only one alien hunting you down. Another thing I must mention, everything looks exactly like it did in the original - and you even have the original green-screened motion tracker.

My friends dissed the game when they saw Sega's name on it, but I still have high hopes for it.

Games / Nuclear Throne - Formerly Wasteland Kings.
« on: October 27, 2013, 08:47:58 AM »
Remember how every game in the Mojam bundle was crap, except for Wasteland Kings? That game is now Nuclear Throne, and it's now on Steam Early Access. You should totally get it.

Steam: http://store.steampowered.com/app/242680
Vlambeer's page: http://nuclearthrone.com/
The original Wasteland Kings if you don't wanna buy the game, right away: http://vlambeer.com/3/

If you don't know what this is, this is a procedurally-generated "roguelike-like" made by Vlambeer, it's also kind of "bullet-hell-ish". I can't really describe it... it's like a real-time version of Gauntlet mixed with The Binding of Isaac, with mutants and guns.
You can play as one of many mutants with special abilities and perks, spicing up the gameplay a-bit.

Also, keep in mind that this isn't the final product, so expect more wonderful things to come. Every Tuesday and Thursday, Vlambeer will be streaming the development of NT.

Games / Voxatron - This cool Robotron-like game that I love
« on: October 22, 2013, 07:48:55 PM »
All of the info is here: http://www.lexaloffle.com/voxatron.php - If you love Robotron, you will love this game.
This game is amazing if you love arcade-y action, trust me.
This game is still in Alpha, so please forgive the few bugs, and expect cool stuff in the future, like an enemy editor and a full adventure mode.

If you have made levels for this game, please share them.
And yes, I know this game has been out for quite some time, but I just discovered it... so yeah.

Games / Steam Trading Card - Out of beta.
« on: June 26, 2013, 01:29:23 PM »
Now the Trading Cards are released, and available to everyone.

Everything you need to know is in the announcement.

and everyone has the new profile layout, too.

EDIT: Beta participants also get a new emoticon. If you were in the beta, type :tradingcard: in the chat so other people can see it.

For some weird reason, you can't find it in your emoticon menu, and you can't see the actual emoticon when you type it out. I would have actually preferred a badge... not some dumb emoticon... nvm you do get a badge

Drama / Kadon - Scheming to leak private add-ons, again.
« on: June 20, 2013, 02:04:10 PM »
Yes, Kadon, otherwise known as Eepos.

He has told me that he has distributed private add-ons, including mine (MrSheep chatbot). I was heartbroken when I found this out, so I talked to him on his steam account. We were friends for a long time, and I gave him my script as a guide for making chat bots. I was a fool for trusting him, and now he's going to leak my add-on on active servers.

I'm telling you this, because other private add-ons may be leaked, and they may contain viruses. (I don't know)
I also posted this to let the new people know that Eepos is a lying, dirty bastard. I hope he's happy.

(Nal gave me Eepos's lines because Eepos removed me)

SkullCandy[BL]: WHERE IS HE GOING TO LEAK MY ADD-ON
Nal: 1421421421421421: around all active servers
Nal: 1421421421421421: I know you're reading this skull, keep bitching.
SkullCandy[BL]: Eepos, why are you doing this?
Nal: 1421421421421421: Hmm, lets see? you added me and created Drama about a problem we had already resolved; might as well do it since you think that I was doing it.
Nal: 1421421421421421: are you going to follow me around servers claiming it's a virus or something?
SkullCandy[BL]: What do you think you're going to get out of this, Eepos?
Nal: 1421421421421421: Well obviously you're going to cry like a loving baby, in fact you're doing it right now.
1421421421421421: So a hilarious reaction.
Nal: why do you care about an addon?
SkullCandy[BL]: This is about our friendship
Nal: 1421421421421421: What friendship?

It's not really about the add-on, it's about the betrayal.

Off Topic / They Live (1988) - Underrated Classic
« on: May 09, 2013, 08:01:55 PM »
John Carpenter's Classic

Trailer
Summary.
Nada, a down-on-his-luck construction worker, discovers a pair of special sunglasses. Wearing them, he is able to see the world as it really is: people being bombarded by media and government with messages like "Stay Asleep", "No Imagination", "Submit to Authority". Even scarier is that he is able to see that some usually normal-looking people are in fact ugly aliens in charge of the massive campaign to keep humans subdued. thank you imdb

What the hell is this topic doing here?
In my opinion, this is the most BRILLIANT and CREATIVE alien invasion ever! I just found an old DVD of this in my "Old Stuff" bin, and I experienced the wonderful world that is nostalgia. I'm making this topic to see if anyone here has heard of this masterpiece. Carpenter has made amazing movies before, like "The Thing," but this is my favorite Carpenter movie. This underrated flick deserves a view. What's better than aliens taking over the mass media to numb our senses?

Images of the bland world.

And yes, this has the epic "I have come here to chew bubblegum, and kick ass. And I'm all out of bubblegum" line.

Off Topic / I have a cactus!
« on: April 16, 2013, 03:18:53 PM »
No, not the fat and tall motherforgeters, just this guy:

Got it today from Home Depot, it's known as the "Red-Headed Irishman." Maybe they're from Ireland...? I don't know. Does anyone here have experience with cacti? I got the basics: pot, sunlight, bug spray, that stuff. The people at Home Depot told me that I should water it every 4-5 weeks. That is true for most cacti, but... I'm not sure about this one, many people beg to differ, so I just want to hear what you have to say.

btw, it's name is Curly :)
