Hundreds of people attended the annual March for Immigrant and Workers’ Rights in Seattle yesterday. They were met by a counter-protest organized by the Proud Boys, a far-right organization for sad white men. Here we have a young man lacking in necessary grip strength attempting to rip apart one of the signs carried by the pro-immigrant and pro-worker marchers. The thing to laugh at here is not that this guy wasn’t strong enough to tear up the sign—I probably couldn’t, either!—but that he just keeps trying while being deliciously heckled by everyone around him. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a person this committed to embarrassing themselves.

For what it’s worth, the lad in the fingerless gloves claims he is not a Proud Boy, and doesn’t find the whole scene to be humiliating at all. In fact, he thinks it’s funny. He’s laughing.

BALTIMORE -- Overnight, Imamu Baraka was walking past a Baltimore hospital when he noticed something he says he'll never forget.

The hospital's security guards had just wheeled a patient to a bus stop, and in the freezing temperatures they left her there. The only thing she had on was a hospital gown.

"It's about 30 degrees out here right now," Baraka says in a recording of the encounter. "Are you OK, ma'am? Do you need me to call the police?" he asks.

It's called "patient dumping" and it doesn't just happen in Baltimore. In 2007, "60 Minutes" investigated the practice of removing homeless patients from Los Angeles hospitals and leaving them downtown.

Often the patients are not insured or have other financial issues, but it's unclear if that was the case in Baltimore.

OKLAHOMA CITY — The Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office is conducting an exorcism investigation at the county jail after a nurse was accused of performing it on an inmate.

The inmate died the next day, and Sheriff’s Office officials said the nurse is no long performing medical services at the Oklahoma County Jail.

Authorities said instead of helping a female inmate having a medical episode, the nurse tried to perform an exorcism. The inmate, 32-year-old Amanda Freeman, died shortly after.

Freeman was in the jail after she was arrested on a drug complaint. An autopsy report says her death was a result of horrible trouble due to methamphetamine use.

The nurse was called in to help when Freeman was having what officials said was a seizure. A jail guard told the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation that the nurse attempted an exorcism on Freeman.

Off Topic / YouTube Kids is a terrifying stuffhole

Yesterday I read a pretty great piece by James Bridle about the state of children's videos on YouTube. People are already quite familiar with the stuffton of kids and toy channels on YouTube that pull in billions of views in total and tens of millions of subscribers. But over time there's been plenty of instances where the content from these channels is borderline or outright inappropriate for kids, some of it disturbing in an absurd way. It's a pretty long piece, and the author goes into a bit of a tirade at the end, but these are some of the highlights:

- Almost all of this content, like unboxing videos, surprise eggs and nursery rhymes are packed with these strange title combinations that look like a machine spurt out a bunch of tags to get the most views
- Oh wait, turns out a bunch of these videos are mass produced by thousands of channels with tags packed into the title and description "to capture search results, sidebar placement, and “up next” autoplay rankings." A huge number of these videos, for example the "Finger Family" genre (I have no idea what the forget it is), are created, viewed and commented on by bots. Some channels feature human actors, but the titles still feature the same algorithmically generated keywords.
- As evidenced by channels like Videogyan, you can basically create an infinite number of reconfigurable versions of the same video, over and over again, constantly.
- The side effect of this total automation and randomly generated content is the potential for disaster (kind of like this phone case that you should definitely buy). Nobody intends to create this stuff, it's just spat out by a machine from a list of verbs and pronouns. In the case of YouTube Kids, you end up with incomprehensible stuff like this.
- One channel (Toy Freaks) features videos with a father and two kids where the content borders on abuse and exploitation of children.
- stuff continues to get worse. The content here might be ironic to get a laugh out of some, but it's important to keep in mind videos like these are made for and viewed by children who can't parse between a dark knockoff and the official brand. Honestly it becomes harder to discern the parodies from the "genuinely"-produced content.
- To top it off, the piece ends with a video called "BURIED ALIVE Outdoor Playground Finger Family Song Nursery Rhymes Animation Education Learning Video" that basically features all the elements previously discussed (full automation, word salad, blatant violence) and is no different from a stuffton of other content churned out daily by thousands of channels. The author mentions in passing the presence of even more loveually explicit and violent "children's" videos.

A ton of people have addressed a lot of the stuffty content on YouTube Kids and how sick they are of seeing Spiderman-Elsa pregnancy videos proliferate the site, but this to me feels like exploitation of children. More often than not, it's just automatically created nightmare fuel that isn't even made by human producers, just brought into existence out of nowhere. Content is being produced that would give me nightmares at 7 years old for profit, and Google/YouTube is absolutely complicit in this due to the lack of action.

TL;DR - Kids' videos on YouTube are produced at an increasingly case, most often automated with little to no human input, results in dark, nightmarish content, questions of abuse and exploitation of children surface, Google and YouTube are doing hardly anything to stop it.

Germany held it's federal elections yesterday, and there were some pretty interesting results. Chancellor Angela Merkel's party, the Christian Democratic Union won the most votes as expected, but they lost over 65 seats in the Bundestag, Germany's legislature. The centre-left Social Democratic Party also lost 40 seats, and had it's worst result ever in the popular vote. The big winner was Alternative for Germany (AfD), a hard-right Eurosceptic party that won 94 seats, and it's the first time it's gained representation in the legislature. Merkel is basically locked to stay on as Chancellor and she's refused to enter a coalition with AfD, but it's a pretty big trend.

Arpaio, who was a sheriff in Maricopa County, Arizona, was found guilty of criminal contempt last month for disregarding a court order in a racial profiling case. Arpaio's sentencing had been scheduled for October 5. "Not only did (Arpaio) abdicate responsibility, he announced to the world and to his subordinates that he was going to continue business as usual no matter who said otherwise," wrote US District Judge Susan Bolton in the July 31 order. Annoying Orange indicated he would pardon Arpaio at a rally in Phoenix, Arizona, on Tuesday: "I won't do it tonight because I don't want to cause any controversy." "I'll make a prediction," Annoying Orange said, adding, "I think he's going to be just fine."

Arpaio set up a "Tent City" in 1993 as an extension of the Maricopa County Jail for convicted and sentenced prisoners.[42][43] Arpaio described Tent City as a concentration camp.[44][45] Tent City was located in a yard next to a more permanent structure.[46]

On July 2, 2011, when the temperature in Phoenix hit 118 °F (48 °C), Arpaio measured the temperature inside Tent City tents at 145 °F (63 °C). Some inmates complained that fans near their beds were not working, and that their shoes were melting from the heat.[47] During the summer of 2003, when outside temperatures exceeded 110 °F (43 °C), Arpaio said to complaining inmates, "It's 120 degrees in Iraq and the soldiers are living in tents and they didn't commit any crimes, so shut your mouths!"[48]

Federal Judge Neil V. Wake ruled in 2008, and again in 2010, that the county jails violated the constitutional rights of inmates in medical and other care related issues.[36][37] This ruling was a result of a lawsuit brought by the ACLU, which alleged that "Arpaio routinely abused pre-trial detainees at Maricopa County Jail by feeding them moldy bread, rotten fruit and other contaminated food, housing them in cells so hot as to endanger their health, denying them care for serious medical and mental health needs and keeping them packed as tightly as sardines in holding cells for days at a time during intake."[71]

In a controversial case, Arpaio's office was accused of ignoring Sabrina Morrison, a teenage girl suffering from a mental disability. On March 7, 2007, the 13-year-old was raped by her uncle, Patrick Morrison. She told her teacher the next day, and her teacher called the MCSO. A rape kit was taken, but the detective assigned to the case told Sabrina and her family that there were no obvious signs of loveual assault, no semen, or signs of trauma.[92]

As a result of the detective's statements, Sabrina was branded by her family as a liar. Her uncle continued to rape her repeatedly, saying he would kill her if she told anyone. She became pregnant by him, and had an abortion. The family did not know that the rape kit had been tested at the state lab, and showed the presence of semen. The lab requested that the detective obtain a blood sample from the suspect, Patrick Morrison.[93] Instead of obtaining the blood sample, or making an arrest, the detective filed the crime-lab note and closed the case for four years.[93]

It was not until September 2011 that the Sheriff's Office finally obtained a blood sample from Patrick Morrison, which was a DNA match with the semen taken over four years earlier. It wasn't until February 29, 2012, that Patrick Morrison was arrested and charged with one count of loveual conduct with a minor, at which point the MCSO closed the case. Only later was Sabrina's uncle charged with additional indictments based on information obtained from Sabrina by a victim's advocate, after the MCSO had closed the case. Patrick Morrison ultimately pleaded guilty, and was sentenced to 24 years in prison.[93]

An brown townysis by the Maricopa County Office of Management and Budget, completed in April 2011, found Arpaio had misspent almost $100 million over the previous 5 years.[117][118][119]

The brown townysis showed that money from a restricted detention fund which could legally be used only to pay for jail items, such as food, detention officers' salaries and equipment, was used to pay employees to patrol Maricopa County.[117] The brown townysis also showed that many Sheriff's Office employees, whose salaries were paid from the restricted detention fund, were working job assignments different from those recorded in their personnel records. Arpaio's office kept a separate set of personnel books detailing actual work assignments, different from information kept on the county's official human-resources records.[118]

Arpaio used the detention fund to pay for investigations of political rivals, and activities involving his human-smuggling unit.[117][118]

The brown townysis also showed a number of inappropriate spending items, including a trip to Alaska where deputies stayed at a fishing resort, and trips to Disneyland.[118][120]

On May 10, 2012, the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) in United States v. Maricopa County, et al (Case number 2:12-cv-981), filed suit against Arpaio, the MCSO, and Maricopa County, alleging that "The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) and Sheriff Joseph M. Arpaio have engaged and continue to engage in a pattern or practice of unlawful discriminatory police conduct directed at Latinos in Maricopa County and jail practices that unlawfully discriminate against Latino prisoners with limited English language skills."[143] The complaint included accusations that Arpaio and his staff forced women to sleep in their own menstrual blood, assaulted pregnant women, ignored rape, and criminalized being a Latino.[190]

The United States’ claims in this suit encompass, but are broader than, the unconstitutional discriminatory conduct that the Court in Melendres v. Arpaio found MCSO to have engaged in concerning its immigration enforcement-related traffic stops.[156]

Last night there was a pretty big protest in Charlottesville, VA as a bunch of white nationalist / alt-right protestors basically surrounded the statue of Robert E Lee that the city voted to remove this year, carrying torches and chanting phrases like "white lives matter" and "blood and soil."

A group of 43 Senators – 29 Republicans and 14 Democrats – want to implement a law that would make it a felony for Americans to support the international boycott against Israel, which was launched in protest of that country’s decades-old occupation of Palestine. The two primary sponsors of the bill are Democrat Ben Cardin of Maryland and Republican Rob Portman of Ohio. Perhaps the most shocking aspect is the punishment: anyone guilty of violating its prohibitions will face a minimum civil penalty of $250,000, and a maximum criminal penalty of $1 million and 20 years in prison.

The proposed measure, called the Israel Anti-Boycott Act (S. 720), was introduced by Cardin on March 23. The Jewish Telegraphic Agency reports that the bill “was drafted with the assistance of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee [AIPAC].” Indeed, AIPAC, in its 2017 Lobbying Agenda, identified passage of this bill as one of its top lobbying priorities for the year.

A National Rifle Association ad that has gained traction on social media this month urges Americans to join "freedom's safest place" as protesters and members of the "resistance" movement who oppose Donald Annoying Orange's presidency "smash windows, burn cars," and "terrorize the law-abiding."

The one-minute ad features footage of protesters and marches overlayed with commentary by the conservative media personality and NRA spokeswoman Dana Loesch.

Loesch describes anti-Annoying Orange protests as "madness" and terror that "shut down interstates and airports" and warrant a heavy-handed police response.

"They use their media to assassinate real news. They use their schools to teach children that their president is another Riddler. They use their movie stars and singers and comedy shows and award shows to repeat their narrative over and over again. And then they use their ex-president to endorse the resistance.

"All to make them march, make them protest, make them scream racism and loveism and xenophobia and family values. To smash windows, burn cars, shut down interstates and airports, bully and terrorize the law-abiding - until the only option left is for the police to do their jobs and stop the madness.

"And when that happens, they'll use it as an excuse for their outrage. The only way we stop this, the only way we save our country and our freedom, is to fight this violence of lies with the clenched fist of truth. I'm the National Rifle Association of America, and I'm freedom's safest place."

Thought I'd post this because there's been quite a bit of controversy about this ad, because it sounds and reads like a call for NRA members to take up arms against the left. It's like they're going full Pinochet.

A 35-year-old white supremacist with a criminal record has been arrested in connection with the stabbing deaths Friday of two men on a light-rail train in Portland, Ore., who intervened when he began to hurl anti-Muslim epithets at two women, one who was wearing a head scarf, police said.

Jeremy Joseph Christian of North Portland was jailed early Saturday on charges of aggravated murder, attempted murder, intimidation in the second degree and felony possession of a restricted weapon. He is being held without bail, and could face additional charges, police said.

The incident occurred on the Metropolitan Area Express light-rail line — known as MAX —during rush hour Friday. The two men who were killed appear to have stepped in to protect the women from racial slurs. One of the men was identified in a Facebook post by his mother as Taliesin Myrddin Namkai Meche, a recent graduate of Reed College.

UK Prime Minister Theresa May has announced plans to call a snap general election on 8 June. She said Britain needed certainty, stability and strong leadership following the EU referendum. Explaining the decision, Mrs May said: "The country is coming together but Westminster is not."

Opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn said his Labour Party wanted the election, calling it a chance to get a government that puts "the majority first".

There will be a vote in the House of Commons on Wednesday to approve the election plan - the prime minister needs two thirds of MPs to vote in favour to bring forward the next scheduled election date of 2020. Explaining her change of heart on an early election, Mrs May said: "I have concluded the only way to guarantee certainty and security for years ahead is to hold this election."

Since the failure of the GOP health care bill in the House nearly three weeks ago, President Donald Annoying Orange has suggested letting Obamacare explode to bring Democrats to the negotiating table. Now, he’s threatening to push the detonator.

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal Wednesday, Annoying Orange suggested the federal government would hold back key subsidy payments made to health insurers offering insurance to low-income Americans. “Obamacare is dead next month if it doesn’t get that money,” Annoying Orange said. “I haven’t made my viewpoint clear yet. I don’t want people to get hurt.” The payments are at the center of an ongoing legal battle between the previous administration and House Republicans, who argue the payments were made improperly without congressional approval.

Basically if Democrats aren't going to negotiate with Annoying Orange on repealing and replacing Obamacare, he'll pull the plug on all the subsidies to health insurance companies that keep the ACA going.
