Last night, after an awesome day skiing, someone back ended us on the highway.
Basically, the story goes as follows:
We were talking about polo when there was a large crash, my friend in the drivers seat yelling "forget! - What was that!", and then the shock of slamming into the barrier. After a few moments of recollection as to what happened, we both pulled out our phones, him dialing 911, and me dialing my mom and several other people as to alert them of the accident.
About thirty seconds later, a man walked up to the car, looked to be in his forties - perhaps early forties. He had several cuts on his face. Granted, the area where he hit us was a two lane because of construction that has been happening for the past couple years.
Raising his hand, he said, "I'm sorry, are you okay - are you okay?" Raising his hand at each of us, then saying, "I tried to stop." Fortunately, we were both indeed okay.
After asking him if he was okay, he replied, "I'm barely okay." He then walked around to the front of the vehicle, and raised his hand, did a little 'bow', and mouthed 'i'm sorry' again.
Then, he walked away, back to his car.
We waited a few minutes for the police to arrive, and I was severely pumped with adrenaline, because this was my first accident. The way our accident occurred had the other driver on the shoulder, but still in traffic, and us taking up a full lane, because we hit the concrete barrier. There was a small amount of space in between, and that's how cars were managing to leak through.
We saw the police lights behind us, and the cop pulled up behind the other persons vehicle. He walked to our car, and asked what happened, and then directed us to the shoulder so traffic could pass at least relatively freely.
We gave him a description of what happened, contacted insurance, gave the police officer all of the information to form a police report.
After about twenty minutes, and two tow trucks, one pulling up and then leaving, and the other picking up our vehicle and beginning to clean up the scene, we wondered where the other man was, because he obviously wasn't in his vehicle.
We asked the cop whether the man had been carted away in an ambulance, or whether he was drunk and taken away in another police car.
Apparently they have been searching for him for the past five hours under domestic abuse charges. He had assaulted his cousin in the field next to the accident on the highway.
Then, a Latina women and a black man walked up, and began to speak with the cop. We had no clue as to whether they were just concerned or why they were there, but as the women was speaking with the police officer, the man walked over to us.
He said, "That trucks not his. That's her (the latina women) moms car. The man who was driving beat her up (the latina womens mom) and destroyed (the latina womens) her brothers car. He also broke windows and general possessions within (the latina womens moms) house."
So the plot thickens.
It was a hit and run charge, and they hadn't identified the guy, so at that point there was no insurance to pay my friend for the damages.
After about twenty minutes, and more frantic calls with insurance agencies, we had to tow driver take our vehicle to a body shop near by, while the other vehicle was to be taken to the police impound.
However, the tow driver did give us some advice on the case. Apparently, the car was not reported stolen until after the accident, and there were also lots of tools in the back, pointing towards the possibility that the man worked in construction, and it was actually his car.
After the tow took us to the body shop, we had my mother pick us up and take us to the E.R, where we got checked out. No serious damage, just a bump on the back of my friends head from his skis, and some back pain and minor whiplash for me.
tl;dr: we got in a car accident, the man was involved in a domestic abuse case, turned out to be a hit and run.
