Off Topic / Dumpster Drive: Exchange Your Digital Trash with Strangers
« on: November 25, 2013, 05:49:35 AM »

Found this interesting idea. the application is currently for Mac only unfortunately, so I don't have any means of testing it out, but basically it's a file sharing network for your unwanted and deleted files.

It's open source, so if anyone happened to want to port it to PC or Linux they could.

They're making streaming copyrighted content a felony now, if I am to believe what I hear.

Off Topic / Bisjac's Posts about money
« on: April 25, 2013, 11:24:20 AM »
Figured I would attempt to make an archive of Bisjac's informative posts about making money, feel free to contribute.

Stocks:

lol kids

just because a stock is worth a lot dosnt mean its a good investment.
maybe a decade ago it was, but investing is to be done in something that has growth in the future...
why on earth would you buy into something that has peaked.

just in apple.

the entire point of investing is growth. if you just wanted to put your money where its not going to do anything at all, might as well leave it in the bank.
companies are trapped in the infinate growth paradigm. and its impossible to keep it up.
they are only "successful" if they make more income then the year before. apple has peaked. a new product will spike it for a month or so, but it will go back down again very quickly.

you guys are only stock-witted enough to see a big number on a company name, i wouldnt trust any of you to trade at the right times, in the matter of hours usually lol

edit. actually you CANT trade by the hour unless you are a broker yourself, or pay crazy fees and belong to crazy subscriptions through brokers.
you are forced to trade at the end of the day when market closes. and you are forced to make a bid based on what you THINK the market will reopen at.
that is not safe for high value stock. if your not trading by the hour, you dont belong there.

are you saying it's a waste of money to invest, period? or just in apple?

Bitcoins:

lol... you guys had to learn the hard way. playing with fake money to get rich and you all look like fools.

even the fact that a single user did this is suspicious. cant be trusted. or the fact that a single user CAN do this at all.

the entire point was supossed to be an alternative to fiat currency(ies)
yet everyone who uses the things, compare it's value, and the value of things they can buy with the bitcoins.... to the USD
so its all a failure already.

they use an escrow account instead of a barter like USD cash would. except since bitcoins are not a dept based IOU, the concept is broken.
(cant have escrow type trade without a dept-note of some kind)
the entire thing is a sham.

#2 reason they are a sham. they froze trading. you do not do that for a correction. for any type of currency.
they are only shooting themselves in the foot for doing so.

a real successful currency would be a LOW number compared to other currencies. not higher lol.
and that currency would also have MORE buying power, regardless of small number size.

when you brag about having lots of value, yet it can still only buy what usd values it to buy. then it is fake and has failed lol

yet they alone exploited the whole system for their own greedy gain. and it worked.

it looks like the bitcoin experiment has failed. there will always be bankers or brokers that will cheat and control it all.

Keeping Money under control:

i buy gold coins with all my uneeded income. holds value or grows faster then a bank can do. and it takes a whole extra errand to go out and liquidate it, so a person couldnt so easily spend it away without thinking about it.

eTrade (OP was asking what to do with 100$):

Quote
Open a "premium active trader" etrade account, with a standard cash (non margin) security.

Then link a checking account from your home bank and transfer it all in.
Cept DON'T buy anyhthing with it, just keep it in your brokerage cash unused index.

It earns cash interest DAILY. And in a month it can be 200
Then continue to sit on it till you have 1000.00
Then anything >1000 you earn daily, use that to buy random stock to practise with

General:

Quote
"good" bank interest rates would be like 5% yearly

$100 a paycheck saved would add up roughly $2,600.00 a year.
after 40 years you could FINALLY hit your 100k base amount. (only slightly sooner thx to the awesome interest helping out) then we can start to see how we live off it...

wow. 5k a year profit.
well i am wrong. you CAN keep up with inflation. but you earned NOTHING.
and you certainly cannot live off that

another 40 years later, still not enough a year to live on.

a penny saved is a penny wasted

the fact is;
money helps you earn money.
if you are saving it, its not earning. and you are failing

--DISCLAIMER--

im not gonna pretend to be pro at it lol.
my advice may not even be good. it could have just worked for me, or i was lucky or just had the opportunities at chance.

plus anything i could tell you guys would only apply to 18+ people anyways

plus my "wealth" (am i even rich?) didnt start with investing. i ran a successful internet business for about a decade.
THAT income i learned to invest with.

Suggestions & Requests / Terrain Generation
« on: March 23, 2013, 12:34:47 PM »
I know a lot of people don't like the idea of terrain generation due to Minecraft, but I think it would be a good feature to add. What do you guys think?

If you're going for space exploration, It's not ideal, but if you're planning nukes, it's quite an accomplishment.

Off Topic / Spirituality Megathread
« on: October 27, 2012, 05:11:01 PM »
First of all:

If you don't believe in anything of a spiritual nature, and you aren't adding anything to the discussion besides an argument, don't post. we don't need 15 pages of nothing but back and forth arguments, if you don't like it or disagree, ignore the topic and leave us to our "Idiocy" as you would probably call it.

I started this thread because I felt like reading about the forum's spiritual experiences.

I believe in God and Identify with the Mormon faith. Unrelated to the Mormon faith, I have helped people rid themselves of what most people call "Voices" telling them things, or telling them to do things. I had a brief stint with Psionics that didn't last very long, so I never got very good at it, and when I'm not stressed with my schoolwork, I love dreams and dreaming.

Anyway, Discuss your beliefs and/or spiritual experiences.

Off Topic / How to prove to yourself God exists
« on: October 21, 2012, 12:43:59 PM »
Here is how you prove it to yourself, step by step. Obviously it's not going to hold up to scientific scrutiny.

1) Stop watching research and masturbating for at least 3 days. There's a reason practically every western church tells you not to.

2) Identify something you would like that is plausible (no giant rampaging monsters for example), at this point it'll probably be to know if god exists. Also, if it's something that would go against the spirit of the bible (10 commandments for example) It's not going to work either.

3) Go to a quiet, secluded area (your room, the park when no one is around, ect.) and pray. Ask your question or make your request sincerely, if you aren't serious, how can you expect him to be?

4) Keep an open mind for the next week or so. If someone invites you to church for example, go. If you feel like doing something you wouldn't normally do, like taking a walk, do it. God works through seemingly random, unconnected events. If you let him nudge you in the right direction. You will be surprised how effective this can be.

Off Topic / Am I the only one who sees these weird streaks of light?
« on: September 05, 2012, 08:51:00 AM »
This has just been bothering me lately and Google can't find me a definitive answer.

This is what it looks like, (I'm assuming) when you look at a point of light at night.

This is what I see (with some gradient effect between each streak)

The streaks rotate with my head, so I know it's in my eyes and not outside, and I've seen these since childhood so I know it's not life-threatening. I just want to know if it's natural to see these things, or better yet if there is a name for this if it's not natural. Thanks.

Off Topic / What causes this drop in users on steam?
« on: August 15, 2012, 12:40:22 PM »

As you can see, there was a large dip in users online between the yesterday and today for a brief time, perhaps for an hour or so? I've seen this happen on several occasions before and I'm curious as to what the cause could be.

Anyone have any insight?

Games / Jact
« on: June 06, 2012, 10:06:21 AM »
Anyone remember Jact? I got into the testing group #4, and it looks like I might be able to send out invites, but I'm not 100% sure yet, so I want to test it out.

Basically it lets you buy stuff with credits you get from playing games. When they were open last time, I got half life 2 from them, but I'm not sure if they are legitimate this time yet.

Still, if anyone wants an invite, give me your email somehow, either by pm or whatever and I'll try to invite you. As far as I can tell, there isn't a reward for inviting people yet, so I don't think I'll benefit much.

Edit: The invites appear to send, now I just need to verify if they are received.

Edit2: I've sent 2 invites, please let me know if you recieve the email.

Edit3: The invites appear to be working.

Suggestions & Requests / Type-sorting events?
« on: June 02, 2012, 07:30:50 AM »
I'm not quite sure what exactly it is called, but it would be nice to be able to use events without using the mouse.

what you would do:

click event box, type partial name of event you want, press enter when the event you want is highlighted, then move onto the next box and repeat until you finish with your events.

can anyone make this? it would make eventing a lot less tedious.

General Discussion / Robo's Sniping DM
« on: May 29, 2012, 10:09:38 AM »
Just wanted to make a topic to raise awareness of my server.

I'm using the build from Here

Gameplay is simple enough, you start out with the military sniper and a pistol from T+T and try to kill people before they kill you.

It should be up all day, and if it's popular enough, I might continue hosting it.
