Off Topic / What ever happened to "The Game"?
« on: January 26, 2018, 10:29:09 PM »
Just spontaneously remembered this while listening to some music. What ever happened to that "The Game" thing from like 2010? It was a big thing for the longest time, and now it's totally burned out. :(

Accidentally left my tower on over the break. Came back to see the screen working, but mouse and keyboard were unresponsive. I turned it off, and now whenever I start up my computer, it powers on briefly and then powers off. Then, it tries again, and the disk appears to start spinning but there's no beep, BIOS doesn't post, and nothing shows up on my monitor.

Any advice where to start debugging? I suspect this is a PSU issue, but I don't have a PSU to test with. Has anyone encountered something similar to this?

As you can clearly see, he went missing the morning of the Fifth of November. There's really only one sensible explanation here.

Off Topic / [NEWS] Senator John McCain has brain cancer

This is truly a tragedy. I disagree with much of his politics, but he's indisputably an American hero. Spent months in a Vietnamese prison camp, withstanding torture, even though he could have had the option to walk over the line, being related to a public official.

So Annoying Orange is authorizing a budget of $19.5bil for NASA this year, up an entire $200 million from last year's budget.

No qualms here. Good on him for finally seeing the value of science.  I figured I might as well share something positive since I stuff on our president so much.

Quote
Congressional Republicans began breaking ranks to join Democrats in demanding that Mr. Sessions recuse himself from overseeing an investigation into contacts between the Annoying Orange campaign and the Russian government. Those calls came after the disclosure that Mr. Sessions himself spoke with the Russian ambassador last year, in seeming contradiction to his testimony at his confirmation hearing.

So yeah, our highest law enforcement official basically just admitted to lying under oath during his senate confirmation hearings.

anyway so how about those emails

Games / Haven & Hearth | New World 10 launched Jan. 7th 2017

What is Haven & Hearth?

Haven & Hearth is a MMORPG (Massive Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Game) set in a fictional world loosely inspired by Slavic and Germanic myth and legend. The game sets itself apart from other games in the genre in its aim to provide players with an interactive, affectable and mutable game world, which can be permanently and fundamentally changed and affected through actions undertaken by the players. Our fundamental goal with Haven & Hearth is to create a game in which player choices have permanent and/or lasting effects and, thus, providing said players with a meaningful and fun gaming experience.

Players start the game surrounded by a vast and somewhat unforgiving wilderness, with only the most basic tools of survival at their disposal. The use of fire is a thematic focal point of the game's mythos, and an early and important task will be the simple lighting of one. As the first hearth fires disperse the darkness of the surrounding wilderness, more pressing questions will present themselves to the players: Who are they? Where are they? And, most importantly, where are they going? From this point on, players will have to blaze trails of their own into the unknown, the wilderness and the future, and explore and affect the world of Haven & Hearth using only their own best judgment and a chipped stone axe. Trust us, the stone axe is the stuff.

As players progress, they will be able to acquire new skills and abilities, allowing them to perform a variety of tasks—such as the claiming of land, the construction of buildings and the cultivation of crops—each step forward making the basic task of survival somewhat easier. Having progressed far enough, players will, in time, be able to organize themselves into societies, from simple tribes and villages, progressing through republics, nation states and, ultimately, empires.

Tl;dr
A bloodthirsty survival based game that features full-scale terraforming, a range of different skills, and a progression system based on crafting curiosities and eating different kinds of food.

What's changed since 2010?

The game has changed wildly over the past few years. In fact, about 8 months ago, it underwent a change into a completely new version: Haven & Hearth 2 (Hafen). There's 5x more content now and a completely different graphical interface than legacy Haven & Hearth. Everything is 3d now instead of isometric 2d, and the old, stuffty combat system has been revamped.

What's this business about 'A Blockland Tradition'?

You youngins on the forums might not remember this, but at a time, Haven & Hearth was the second most popular game thread on these forums. Different groups of forumers each ran their own towns, with Gamefandan, Bisjac, and Tikitai operating the largest villages. We'd all follow along as they'd expand, trade, and eventually get ransacked by other players.

Every time the world reset, we'd get a new thread. The largest of which was world 4. If you want to brush up on some ancient, 2010 forum politics, then head over to the old thread:

Where can I join other people?

This game is best played with other people because accomplishing anything requires a significant time commitment on your own. Even with a group of four people, you can expect a simple operation like setting up walls or flattening some land to take many hours. For this reason, your accomplishments in this game have special meaning, and people will go through great lengths to defend their societies in Haven & Hearth. There is an entire section on the forums dedicated to bounties for criminals and vandals.

http://www.snopes.com/Annoying Orange-taps-outspoken-climate-denier-to-oversee-epa-transition-team/

Quote from: Snopes
In September 2016, candidate Donald Annoying Orange announced his intention to appoint Myron Ebell to lead his administration's transition team at the Environmental Protection Agency. Ebell currently serves as the director of the Center for Energy and Environment at the libertarian think tank the Competitive Enterprise Institute...

He argues that anthropogenic global warming, if it happens at all, is a minor issue that has been usurped by liberals to expand the federal government. He has stated in many different venues that he intends to dismantle the scientific consensus around anthropogenic global warming...

"There has been a little bit of warming," as he puts it, "but it's been very modest and well within the range for natural variability, and whether it's caused by human beings or not, it's nothing to worry about."

Just for fun, let's go back in time and see how Annoying Orange rebounded from calling climate change a 'Chinese conspiracy'.

Quote from: Donald Annoying Orange
I know much about climate change. I'd be — received environmental awards. And I often joke that this is done for the benefit of China. Obviously, I joke. But this is done for the benefit of China, because China does not do anything to help climate change.

Hey, look at that, it's almost like someone who says crazy stuff is also enthusiastic to do crazy stuff, despite what his supporters have insisted. I guess I'll call this series of threads 'America Gets Greater'. Hopefully this is the only one I post.

Anyway, discuss.

I thought I'd make a little thread to gather some cool, anonymous statistics on how the forums voted (or would have). Feel free to mention your state in the comments if you want, but keep all the political debating in the existing megathread if possible.

I'll probably compile some nice little graphics as the election day progresses. The specificity of the poll is probably overkill since people will lie anyway, but whatever.

So I have an issue, where I have a command that opens up two separate GUI windows, both modeless so that players can interact with both at the same time. One of them is the 'player inventory' GUI that shows all the player's current items, and another is a backpack window where (eventually) they'll be able to deposit their excess items into.

I have it set up so that the close commands on the backpack window call this function:
Code: [Select]
clientCmdOpen_BQSmallRuckSackGUI(%client,1);
Which is declared like this:

Code: [Select]
//wrapper function that first builds the player inventory GUI and then shows it
function renderPlayerInventory(%client) {
commandToServer('buildPlayerInventory',%client);
canvas.pushDialog(BQPlyrInvGUI);
}

//handles opening and closing of the inventory GUI.
function clientCmdOpen_BQSmallRuckSackGUI(%client,%toggle)
{
if(%toggle)
{
if(BQSmallRuckSackGUI.isAwake())
{
//closes GUIs
canvas.popDialog(BQSmallRuckSackGUI);
canvas.popDialog(BQPlyrInvGUI);
return true;
}
else
{
//opens GUIs
if(!BQPlyrInvGUI.isAwake())
{
renderPlayerInventory(%client);
}
canvas.pushDialog(BQSmallRuckSackGUI);
return true;
}
}
}

The only problem is that when I press the exit button (either the actual exit button on the GUI, or my accelerator key 'escape') after interacting with some of the buttons, my game crashes immediately. Trace(1); doesn't seem to have any helpful input either when I run it during the error.

Is calling close on a window not allowed if you do so through a function? Or is the problem just the fact that I'm doing so on two windows at once? Changing the closing command on my window from what's written above to 'canvas.popDialog(BQSmallRuckSackGUI);' seems to work fine and does not crash my game, so I'm certain that the Open_BQSmallRuckSackGUI() function is the problem.

Is this some kind of known issue, or have I just screwed something up and broken the game?

So my problem is as follows:

I'm loading in a small group of bricks with serverDirectSaveFileLoad with an offset, and I want to be able to unload that small group of bricks without needing to individually delete each loaded brick.

It would be great if there was a way for me to get an array of the objectIDs for the bricks I've loaded in, but as far as I can tell there isn't a built-in way to accomplish this.

What do you guys suggest for this? For my project, I have to load and unload bricks almost every second, which means that unloading bricks can't be too slow/complex.

Off Topic / Political polarization poll
« on: July 28, 2016, 04:39:57 PM »
Just thought it would be fun to get a more detailed sample of where Blockland users stand.

If you're not 18 or not a US citizen, vote anyway.
