General Discussion / Re: the stagnation of blockland
« on: February 08, 2022, 10:06:24 PM »
the thing is that blockland began as a casual tech demo, gained nostalgia interest for being 1:1 lego, then the already small playerbase transferred over to the redesign to our current blockland and remained small and niche for the 15 years or so we've been playing. Despite having a couple developers over time it remained infinitely smaller than most other similar games of the time. it also had minimal advertising outside of the few early 2000's sidebar ads I saw.

the lack of a large team meant moderation, administration, advertising, and development fell only on badspot and he more or less let the community do its own thing. the time to make blockland explode was 10 years ago when it was already booming, but that was before steam greenlight or anything like that. Even when it did hit greenlight it was mostly passed by as the upstart indie game scene started to rise, and by then roblox and minecraft had already gotten a pretty cult following in the sandbox builder realm. blockland is by no means the only game of its genre, despite how unique it is to us.

nowadays the indie scene is even more saturated than it was when greenlight hit steam and it's even harder to make your one-man-team game shine unless you either have extraordinary exposure or your game is absolutely stunning and impressive. And frankly, a 2005 torque-engine game is not, not in 2012, and definitely not in 2022.

I think it just remained quiet until it hit a saturated market and wasn't the lucky one to get boosted and adopted by the masses.

Games / Re: Mount & Blade 2: Bonerlord

Combat feels awesome, weighty, landing hits and dropping foes feels great. It's still technically early access rn which caught me offguard bc I thought it was fully releasing on the 31st. There's definitely some rough edges to iron out (Bugs, glitches, etc.) but all in all it has great game feel.

Make sure you have over 8gb ram to run this game smoothly

still don't understand the deal with the staff team. are people just incapable of having a filter or is there some inner circle knowledge that I'm unaware of

well yeah some people cant control themselves, but also if you take a handful of like-minded people of course they're gonna have preconceived bias and opinions on what should be and what shouldn't be allowed. with that comes the same problem as if you took another handful of different like-minded people. whoever opposes the current collection of yay-naysayers is gonna complain about who's in charge.

edit: i guess my point (Written less vague) is that, when some people of your own community decide to stand up and make their own version of the game, you have to deal with their views on how the game should be played, run, moderated. so maybe the mindset is "we're a community, why do they call the shots and not us" but after all, they're making the game.

General Discussion / Still-active hosting services?
« on: May 22, 2019, 11:29:38 PM »
I'm looking to host a server but my internet sucks richard. Are any hosting services still online as of right now? Glass went offline a few months ago so I'm pretty out of the loop.

T+T was the stuff but the mix-n-match of random weapons mods on different TDM servers was loving fantastic. jorgurs dogfight, cucumberdudes TDM's, and wizzards dogfight were by far my most memorable. using the minigun on the biplane in jorgurs to just annihilate the enemy air, abusing the pill to maintain my health, DB-shotgunning some guy out of the map lol, or overtaking the enemies spawn ship, trying to survive as long as possible.

I was just thinking about this the other day, I spent countless hours back in high school staying up late to play Jorg's Dogfight. Flying two Slopes map terrain loops over to reach the Freebuild zone to have a secret exclusive tdm (Even though it was against the rules.).
Another memorable one was the [SS] KINEX dogfight with the two aircraft carriers in the river valley. I don't think it had T+T but god was it a factor in my few hours of sleep each night.

Closing for now, internet is too spotty, I'll bump and reopen it in the next couple days perhaps.
