I recommend NOT starting with weapons. You should start with making simple scripts. Move to weapons when you get good at making normal scripts, you'll find that they are much easier to understand.

activatepackage shouldn't have a space between the actual function called and the (). pretty sure that's your problem.

The engine does not mind whitespace. Infact, this is valid: $TestVar
          =

Its crazy, but it works. This is also valid: $TestVar=4;. No whitespace is needed AT ALL exempt in strings.

Python as far as I know doesn't have functions such as GetWord() or GetSubStr(), so I was wondering if I could call torque functions in IDLE, and Python functions in Blockland somehow.

This is a problem with models. Its been in Blockland for years, and is not that big of a problem. It has to do with the way light from the sun reflects off and large models. Try decreasing your draw distance.
