Help / Re: Low framerate without 100% utilization

After a bit of messing around I found that putting blockland into fullscreen mode nearly doubles my framerate for some reason.

Help / Low framerate without 100% utilization
« on: August 31, 2012, 11:25:24 AM »
What happens: When I run blockland with shaders maxed out, my framerate in game is low even though my GPU nor CPU are running at 100% usage. I know its not a CPU bottleneck because the main thread blockland is running on is nowhere near using an entire core. Yes I am aware that blockland is not multithreaded and wont run on all 6 cores, but utilization is still less than one core can provide.

Here is a screenshot of what happens

You can see here that the framerate is topping out at ~31 FPS while GPU utilization is only reaching 80%

I did a little bit of looking into the problem myself and came across AMD's GPU Shaderbrown townyzer.
I don't have a lot of experience with graphics/shaders, but from my messing around with it I was only able to get blockland's GLSL shaders to compile and run with Catalyst 11.7, 11.8, and 11.9. If I try compiling on anything newer, it tells me "Hardware Compilation failed". The 11.9 version of the catalyst drivers are almost a year old at this point.

Computer Specs: AMD Phenom II x6 1100T, 16 Gb ram, AMD 5830 + Catalyst 12.8 Drivers, Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit

Okay. So I'll use that free platform. I'm still not seeing the comparison between xbox and ps3.
Alright, microsoft and sony both have tons of exclusive games on their platforms. The similarity here is that EA is already doing this with their new games on origin, and other publishers will probably start doing the same.

I don't see the terrible problem with that, seeing as the distribution platforms are free.
You seem to be forgetting that games aren't, and once you buy them they are linked to the respective platform you purchased it from.

Boo hoo, you need to take an extra 9 seconds to see what your friends are doing, what a time consumer!
I'm more concerned with the general idea of having to use multiple platforms to play games, and the inconvenience that it would be. As I said before, all these digital distribution platforms would probably split PC the same way that there are Xbox and PS3 exclusive games.

You don't have a problem with switching between different programs to play games and managing your friends lists between platforms?

Steam is a DRM and you said that you think DRMs are stuffty.
No, I did not.

Also, buying the game from origin would only support the propagation of stuffty digital download services, which would effectively give the PC platform the equivalent of xbox VS ps3.
What I am complaining about is that if the trend of game publishers exclusively putting their games on their own digital distribution platform, then PC will become just like Xbox and PS3, with different games being only on their respective download service. I never said anything about DRM because having DRM is implied with having a digital distribution platform.

Rate the game, not the DRM. If you're refusing to buy a good game because of what it's on, you're being stupid.
I would say its pretty loving inconvenient to have to run origin, have a EA browser plugin installed, and use a web browser based server list to play one game.

Also, buying the game from origin would only support the propagation of stuffty digital download services, which would effectively give the PC platform the equivalent of xbox VS ps3.
I don't think you understood my point here. Do you really want to end up running a digital distribution platform for every game publisher just so you can play their exclusive games? Personally, I will not take this bullstuff.

1. It's in beta, there's only one(right now caspian is down) playable map. It's not going to be that great.
2. I saw on the bf3 forums that it's not the most recent patch. Meaning there will be changes from our preview gameplay to the retail version.
I wasn't planning on buying it anyways. The browser based server list just goes too far. This isn't some stuffty korean MMO. Also, buying the game from origin would only support the propagation of stuffty digital download services, which would effectively give the PC platform the equivalent of xbox VS ps3. I do not want that to happen, so I will just save my money for better games and not support stuffty platforms.
