Ask for Blockland for your birthday instead of a Nerf gun and the miniature Batman magnetic play set.

Modification Help / Decals
« on: September 07, 2007, 09:06:38 PM »
Skele and I are working on some decals. Here are a few previews.

Feel free to make requests, as long as your request isn't something dumb, a fad, or a google image.

The volcano in Badspot's blockparty erupted, burying many builds (ok, I just added random buried builds for effect, I didn't bury anyone's stuff) and the office.

Here is a lovely stack of bodies. Right, the aftershocks from the volcano made the camera shake and blurred it.

Gallery / Hologram Particles
« on: August 28, 2007, 03:41:41 PM »
Manually archived by Wedge. If you have a question, PM me. Unfortunately, I lost the files when I killed my hard drive, so I can't release them or give you them.

I'm working on designing a few more.

The problem with them is that particles always turn to face you, so you end up with the holograms that were previously coming out of a computer turning and intersecting walls, and looking dumb in general.

I'm going to try a few spherical and cylindrical holograms next, they might work better.

Anyway, these are great for screenshots (since people can only see what you show them) and if you put them in the center of the room, so they can rotate without looking awful.

Suggestions & Requests / Reverse Macro
« on: August 27, 2007, 11:28:12 PM »
You should be able to go through your recently constructed bricks (similar to the undo button) and turn the bricks you've recently placed into a macro. The macro should then be reversed, so it builds stuff in the correct order. It would be useful because sometimes I realize I should have used a macro after I built something, and I'd like to be able to go back and turn it into a macro rather then build a second one and record it.

Drama / China complains about quality of US soybean exports
« on: August 22, 2007, 07:49:10 PM »
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/6958492.stm

I think China is just trying to make stuff up to balance out all the US concern over China product qualities. The fact that they complain about contaminated dirt and weeds really makes me think they are making it up. Americans eat this stuff to, and they would be sick of there was anything harmful in it. And since China claims it was harmful dirt and weeds, and not impurities from uncleaned shipping containers, that pretty much hits the nail in the coffin, for me anyway.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

Or actually care about the safety of American bean exports? Probably not.

In other news, I love my new RSS feed reader.

If you have never heard of Smash TV, read this.

This arena sort of resembles smash tv, in the sense that its a box, you play from a GTA style top-down view, and the enemies fly out of the walls. Anyway, here are some screenshots. It was made using the zombie mod. It used fairly normal player options, except players were forced to use the top-down view model, the gun was locked into a horizontal firing position, similar to doom, and the weapon spawns took insane amounts of time (to simulate the random power-up drops of Smash TV).

And the entire arena it self, complete with stands and a glass floor for viewing.

Drama / Blockland 2
« on: August 15, 2007, 03:17:04 PM »
The long awaited sequel for the hit-cult game Blockland has finally been announced. The game will follow the traditional gameplay focusing on the construction of miniature plastic objects, with some new twists, and upgrades that fully take advantage of the capabilities of modern computational power.

Phsyics

Yes, physics. Long awaited, and long requested, Blockland 2 will feature physics! But the physics go far beyond what anyone previously imagined. You will be able to knock around bricks (which are fully destructible now, including gibs), other players, and vehicles. With enough force, you may even move large physical objects like the bed in bedroom, or knock down the lamp on the dresser.

The new physics engine is upgraded massively. Collisions are represented as a bunch of nodes representing the atoms of the structure, connected through rigid bones, which freely rotate. Every object expresses a small amount of "give" when someone bumps into it. Solid objects have rigid bones, liquids are simulated with loose bones, and gasses have no bones. Objects and movements are now simulated down the the molecular level.

Furthermore, there is a new fluid dynamics calculation system. Solid objects act on the semi-rigid nature of fluid to push them in a realistic manner. You can now trap liquids in containers. You can also trap gasses in some containers. Moving objects around influences the air, creating small changes in the air patterns (much more noticeable as a mini-figure, you can push people around with the wind). Flowing liquids push and create force against physical objects. If enough force builds up, weak containers may break or rupture.

Next feature... AI... Coming soon.

Drama / Install your add-ons correctly
« on: August 09, 2007, 10:00:05 PM »

Yesterday I downloaded \Add-Ons\Add-ons\add-ons\AddALL\AddAll\Add-Ons\shapes\parachute.dts

This was the real directory.

I don't even know how someone can be dumb enough to install a mod like that. I've got two theories here:

1. Someone is purposely trying to annoy me.

2. Someone installed Add-all on their computer, incorrectly. They extracted add-all to the add-all folder instead of to the add-ons folder, and put it in the add-ons directory. Thus AddAll\Add-Ons was born. Someone zipped this up and named it AddALL and sent it to their friend. They installed it wrong to, and created AddALL\AddAll\Add-Ons. Then, through some strange series of events, involving AIM, three people, and unparalleled levels of stupidity, the Add-Ons\Add-ons\add-ons\AddALL\AddAll\Add-Ons\ folder was born.

The worst part was, there were several people in the server. I don't know if they were actually in it or downloading content though. The add-ons/add-ons or add-ons/blockland/add-ons or even the add-ons/add-ons/add-ons folders are old news. But this is ridiculous.

Heads must roll and blood must be shed for this terrible crime.

So I tested this with Resonance_Cascade on his server. It was great fun.

I've still got a few ideas I'm working into the map. Mostly easter eggs.

Hey, he's coming to help!

Suggestions & Requests / Oversized Piano Keys
« on: July 01, 2007, 03:46:28 PM »
Bricks, that when you step on them, play the different main menu sounds. They should be organized by note, and come in a variety of sizes. Maybe they can light up or glow when you step on it.

Forum Games / [Mapping] BL Island
« on: June 06, 2007, 03:09:19 PM »
The goal of this project is to assemble an island containing artwork from a variety of forum members.

Here are the choices of what you can make:
  • Some kind of interior.
  • Some kind of small static model.
  • A heightmap. (Please test it before posting it. Don't submit random grey-scale images)
  • A sky. (No plasma, I know you know how to generate random stuff in Photoshop)
  • Anything else creative, suggest it before you make it.

This project differs from other projects in another way. People with no mapping or modeling experience can participate!

You make create textures for buildings, or create an image that will be placed on a sign or billboard along with your name.

Rules:
Don't make something really, really huge.
Your content must be suitable for the forums.
You can't overwrite default files or someone else's files.

Of course, I wouldn't start a community project if I didn't plan to participate. Stay tuned, I'll be posting content within the next few weeks.

Thanks to Nige for the idea.

Deadlines:
June 16- Project Evaluation (whether we should keep working or there is little interest)

Suggestions & Requests / Face Builder
« on: May 19, 2007, 07:53:28 AM »
I don't know how much experience people have with various languages, but I imagine that it would be fairly easy to create a script for a web page that would allow you to construct a face decal out of various pre-created parts, and then export them.

Just something to think about.

Suggestions & Requests / Floating Player Names
« on: April 02, 2007, 11:05:25 AM »
Someone brought this to my attention on the RTB forums, and I decided to post it over here, since it is a pretty good suggestion.

On the mini-game menu, there should be an option to toggle player names on or off, as well as set a maximum draw distance. For example, you won't see a giant red Wedge on the other side of the map when you are playing death match.
