Games / Re: SimCity Beta is Here! The Beta is coming January 25-28!
« on: January 20, 2013, 01:02:10 PM »
I'm not worried about it running on computers. Min specs mention an Intel HD 3000 so I should be able to run on pretty much anything, even my laptop.

This game is priced far higher than other Sin City titles on release though. It's not surprising since it's a big budget AAA title by EA now, but I don't feel like dropping $60 on it so I'll wait a few months I think. Hopefully they'll have all their patches out by then.

Do I need to pre-order to register for the beta?

32
You do not have a snakebite. I change the title all the time to random stuff. Never trust it. Collect them all.

33
You attend a public meeting held for "folks with the California - Oregon fever." You're told:

If you leave too early, there won't be any grass for your oxen to eat. If you leave too late, you may not get to Oregon before winter comes. If you leave at just the right time, there will be green grass and the weather will still be cool.

You decide that a DOS game's advice is too cryptic. The computer lab conveniently has an encylopedia set sitting over in a corner, so you instead consult a copy of Encyclopedia Wikiped, O-P.

The encyclopedia informs you that people usually took between 4-7 months to travel along the trail. Several famous expeditions left in May, which would get you there in September at the earliest. In March the average temperature is around 45 degrees F, and it's likely that the grass still hasn't had time to recover after winter.

Welcome to the Oregon Trail! Starring:

Bret "Shell" Wilson
Bret is a really chill dude and probably smokes some cigars and drinks forties with his bros when he's not farming the family farm in the middle of downtown Chicago.

Anna "Marcem" Wilson
Anna invested well in the dot com bubble of the early 90s and sold off just before the crash, making her extremely wealthy. She basically just sits around on the farm all day enjoying her piles of cash.

Joey "scout" Wilson
Joey is headmates with the entire cast of anime characters and probably has a dozen tumblr accounts where he pretends to be a girl. So far therapy hasn't helped.

Duane "Duane" Wilson
According to Joey, Duane once ate a spider but she says she didn't, that's gross.

Baby "Port"
is actually a time traveling cyborg from the future sent back in time to prevent something from happening. We don't know what it was because they prevented it from happening obviously.

can we use >fasthelp whilst in oregon trail

No, because fasthelp is a DOS 6.0 program, and also you can't open the console and run Oregon Trail at the same time.

But I'll allow it anyway.

You type fasthelp in the terminal and press enter. Nothing happens. Then you look at the paper GTA gave you earlier. It turns out it has a quick command guide on it!

Welcome to DOS! Here are some basic commands to get you started.

Running Programs:
Just type the name of a executable file to run it. You don't need to include the extension.

Getting around:
To change drives, type the drive letter and then a colon. Valid drive labels on the lab computers are:
A: (3.5in Drive)
B: (5.25in Drive)
C: Hard Disk

You must have media in the drive in order to mount it. To view the files in a directory, type dir. To change to a new directory, type cd and then the name of the directory you want to switch to.

To delete files, type del then the file name. To copy something, type copy then the filename. Copy works on directories too. Mkdir and then a name will allow you to make a directory. Rmdir will allow you to remove an existing directory.

Type and then the filename will display the text of a file on your screen.

System Basics:
The lab computers are all outfitted with 2 floppy disk drives, a hard disk to permanently save your files on, a monitor, and a mouse. Installed packages include qbasic and Windows. We will be using qbasic in class to teach basic programming skills in the first part of the semester.

put me in as scout
Okay, scout.

3. Duane
In, but as four.

This is the best Community Projects "game" I have seen so far.
And according to the rules, you're five, even if you didn't intend to be. Congratulations!

37
Oh yeah, also only people in the party will be able to decide what happens (unless people in the party stop posting).

3 spots left.

38

Next four people to post make it on the wagon, everyone else dies in Illinois in the zombie invasion.

>cd OREGON_
Congrats on your first valid command, although you don't need to put _ at the end of everything.

I'm sorry, I shouldn't be so sarcastic.

4 so the GTA doesn't know you're playing games

1, and now the thread turns into a Oregon Trail let's play.

Wedge, this is a real computer/vm you're using, isn't it?

Spoiler: You were the computers all along.

Missed my ninja edit, I tried getting to win31.

>cd rogue

Shell, type just opens a file as text.

In fact it does. I'm going to let him get away with it anyway though, since he got in first. Even though I absolutely adore Rogue. Don't worry, there will definitely be Rogue. And maybe getting sucked into the computer like in Tron, except without the whole getting sucked into the computer part because people don't really do that.

C:\>TYPE OREGON_

aw yeah time for some oregon trail up in this bitch

also remember to >FASTHELP_

C:\GAMES>cd OREGON

C:\GAMES\OREGON\>OREGON

I was hoping to try and install graphics drivers, then I saw your first reply and tried anyway.

>cd games
I never said it didn't have graphics drivers. In fact, it does. They're sitting in C:\DRIVERS\S3, nobody bothered checking. In fact, it's quite possible there's a shell installed (hint).

You angrily shout at your stupid terminal. The GTA comes over to your computer, glances at your screen, and notices you are struggling with some basic commands. They sigh, and hand you a manual, then depart without a word. You're off to a great start in your operating systems lab, congratulations.

http://www.computerhope.com/msdos.htm#02

From now on I'll just try and interpret bad commands and come up with something close to what people want, unless it's impossible. For example:

C:\>TYPE=INFO.TXT;
File =INFO.TXT; not found.

C:\>TYPE=INFO.TXT
File =INFO.TXT not found.

C:\>TYPE INFO.TXT

Suddenly a torrent of text dumps down your screen, the green letters flashing before your eyes. You catch bits and phrases in both English and German. It's the documentation to FMT.EXE, and explains to you how to use FMT command to format 5.25 and 3.5 in floppies in high and low density formats.

You can now format floppies. Just state that you'd like to make a floppy and what size, and you'll automatically do it.

>GOTO=GAMES;_

no

>GOTO=INFO.TXT;_

Unfortunately I can't give you any response because, while this is a valid command, it doesn't do what you think it does. In fact, in the context it does nothing (goes to label GAMES which doesn't exist then does nothing).

Try cd games to open a directory or type info.txt to read info.txt. Also, file extensions don't necessarily mean anything in DOS, and OS will happily try and type any file you like, so feel free to try typing anything and see what garbage comes out.

>sudo lspci
Hahaha, wrong operating system.

C:\>sudo lspci
Illegal command: sudo.

C:\>open='INFO.TXT'
Illegal command: open.

C:\>open='GAMES';
Illegal command: open.

Here, let me give you some help.
