what if theres a paint brick mode and an actual spraypaint mode that allows you to paint anywhere on (your) bricks
There could be canvas bricks, that allow you to paint on the brick face itself. =) There would probably need to be a limit to how many bricks there can be on the server, however.

oh my god

what if smallbricks were literally tiny bricks

what if you could toggle brick collision layers with a single key instead of a crapton of brickpacks

what if you could toggle brick textures, so it could either look like a normal brick, or it would be flat textures all around
That's possible, there's really no limit to how small bricks can be.

will it be free for BLF users <3
I wish I could release it for free, but I'm putting way too much work and effort into this to do so lol.

Are you going to make a custom vehicle system that allows vehicles to be made out of bricks like that one "buildable vehicles" add-on? Or at least make some kind of support for that kind of thing?
Custom, buildable vehicles are planned for sure.

How many bricks can the game support before hitting memory issues? I'm guessing all the bricks have combined meshes
The game is no where close to being optimized, so I think it's a bit early to answer that. Last I checked, I was able to get 2,500 bricks on screen at once with hardly any issues. But, will do more extensive stress tests once more optimization techniques are added.

Eventually, I should be able to get the brick system to be very close, if not, exactly as efficient as Blockland handles it. Right now, yes bricks are combined into a single mesh. But, later on I'll add adjacent brick face occlusion, make some changes to the brick mesh handler / octrees to take full advantage of frustum culling, implement occlusion culling (i.e. hiding bricks behind other bricks - once I buy the full version of Unity), and possibly add other techniques like distance culling. You'll also have the option to toggle shader options, as an additional way to improve the game's performance.

thought: being able to color window glass independently from the frame
I did have that option before, but it's no longer included due to how bricks are now handled. Although, I could probably add that feature back in eventually.

I think the winner should be only conceptual right now. No offense to zeubermedic at all, but they don't really look like final game models yet.
Yeah, it was just a conceptual design contest - I'll work on the final tool designs eventually.

Update: 3/18/2018

New Brick Models & Importing Script
- A couple new models for bricks have been added! A speaker brick and three cylindrical bricks have been added (modeled by mario0126 / Flairieve). I also included some basic plates, 1x tall bricks, ramps and two window bricks (with transparent glass).
- A script was also recently added, that makes importing custom bricks much MUCH easier. Eventually, this script can be used for third party content, but for now it's being used for development purposes. When a brick is imported into the game via this script, it will automatically calculate brick rotation in advance for you, as well as set up brick culling (not yet working) and create a simplified render model of the brick.

Brick Rotation
- Bricks can now be rotated before being planted (which was much more difficult to get working than it sounds =/).

Permanent Vertex Coloring
- You can now set up permanent vertex colors for bricks when they're being modeled, and have them be applied in-game. Brick faces / objects that have vertex coloring preassigned will not have custom paint colors applied to them (when the brick itself is recolored). But, all other faces of the brick will. You can also set up transparent colors, for things like glass windows.
- Soon, I hope to add actual painting of bricks, but for now a color randomizer is being used.

Blockland with terrain? Beautiful
Yes sir. Infinite terrain is a feature I'm really looking forward to implementing, but will probably wait until Beta stage.

You should change the page in the title from pg. 97 to pg. 99
Fixed, thanks.

Congrats, ZeUberMedic! Your entry was chosen as the winning design for the build tool contest. Thanks to everyone who submitted an entry, I enjoyed seeing all the concepts y'all came up with. =)

is there any chance of the creator open-sourcing this game? just curious
It probably won't be open-source, but I am planning on releasing some or most of the scripts for content creators. I also would like to include tutorials and have reference models for bricks, to show how they are set up.

i hope this isnt a pain in the ass to run
with all those new fangled "graphics enhancements" that are turned on by default
There will be graphical options you can toggle, to improve the game's performance on your PC. Plus, my computer can barely run most Steam games, and yet I've been getting a quite decent framerate with the game so far. =)

forget what contest
We're holding a contest for designs on new building tools for the game. It ends in two hours though, lol.

if the game is going to have a signature build, it may sound weird, but...

it should be one of those rainbow walls that keep appearing

for nostalgic purposes

once the game is finished
lol, yeah the rainbow brick walls were an easy way to demonstrate brick colors and physics. But, they can definitely be featured as a build for nostalgia purposes. =)

Also, the contest will be ending in less than 3 hours. So if anyone has a design to submit, please do so before then.

Very nice, using makeshift weapons / tools is a great idea.

I don't know if this is entirely possible or not but could you make shaders so that when light travels through a colored brick that is transparent, it gets tinted that color coming out the other side?

kinda like

I did look into that, but having colored shadows would be incredibly calculation intensive, and just wouldn't be practical in a game. You could technically use spotlights to give the appearance of colored shadows in some cases, but you would need a separate light entity per shadow.

I love how the floor looks so 3D even though it's not, normal mapping is wonderful.
sHIZ I JUST NOTICED
Looks neato
Thanks guys

stuff thats nice

i know this has probably been asked before but will the ever be paid?
I wouldn't mind and in fact would encourage that you sell this as a $20 game

just seems right for something that has been worked on this hard
Yes, but I'm thinking of selling it for between $15 to $20 USD at most.

Minor Update: Finally got transparent colors working! Also made some improvements to how brick textures are handled, and added a few more HUD graphics.

I can finally see the models I made! Nice Job!
Thanks! I'll hopefully include a few more models shortly.
