I know how you feel. Im losing weight and I'm being noticed more. I got a girl by acting as sweet and nice as possible. Being in the friendzone was thought to be a bad idea but you get closer as a friend then a person who wants to go out with her. I learned to talk to girls through social networking. Just added girls, and talked to them on aim. I know it's a lot different than real life, but hey, it helped me get over the fear.
