Badspot's Block Party - Pirate Island Build

Block Parties are back on the menu again, and were recently kicked off with a plain old terrain build earlier in the month however that's now been replaced with a new Pirate Island Build theme. Eagle-eyed players may recognise a couple of the builds shown in these screenshots as some fairly old block party builds which you might find on the Blockland website. These have been reloaded to get the party going.

The objective of this build is (obviously) to make pirate-themed adventure builds for people to hunt for treasure. As usual, Badges of Quality are available for builds that really bring something new and exciting to the table so I'd encourage everyone to join the server and have a shot at building for the theme.

General Discussion / RTB DOWN until further notice
« on: February 08, 2013, 04:16:07 PM »
There's an issue at the moment whereby the RTB server can't connect to the Blockland auth server, presumably some kind of action by the people who host the Blockland auth server. As such, all ingame components of RTB are offline until further notice, except the manual - that still works.

Sorry, there's nothing I can do about this.

Broken things:

  • Mod manager
  • RTB connect
  • Server information
  • Website registration
  • RTB Mod Bot

Working things:

  • The manual
  • BlockBot

Edit: I also have no ETA about when it will be fixed whatsoever, it's entirely out of my control. I'm going to bed now.

Modification Help / RTB Development

RTB Development
So this thread officially marks the kick-off of development for the next huge feature of RTB and another smaller but long-awaited one too. A lot of my time has been tied up with the dedicated hosting service you've probably seen, but now that it's at a stable point with a great variety of good functionality it's time to continue development of RTB itself.

RTB v4.1
Version 4.1 will be the final new feature release for the 4.x versions and will be introducing the long-awaited user-owned chat rooms for the RTB Connect service. The idea will be to allow any user to create their own chat room which they can fully manage themselves. A couple of the features may include:

  • Optional BlockBot presence for room moderation.
  • Room browser to search and filter player-owned rooms to join.
  • Full user management functionality including ranks, banning and custom icons for the room.

I've not yet decided whether rooms will be persistent (i.e. they continue to exist after everyone's left) or whether there's some process to apply for a persistent room which may be granted to the more popular ones. The volume of player-owned rooms will initially probably be substantial since everyone's going to want one so this would work well as a process of pruning the less popular/empty ones.

Any ideas anyone can offer for a room browser would be great - I'd probably want it to be able to happily handle around 100 rooms and have them easy to browse and sort.

RTB v5 - RTB Buffet
RTB Buffet is the working name for the next big feature of RTB which is essentially going to be a system to allow users to upload, share, rate, comment on and download "props" they've made in Blockland. A prop is a general term for anything made in Blockland short of an entire build - it could be anything from a lamp post to an evented computer to a ye olde medieval shop. RTB Buffet would allow users to submit these props to RTB to allow other users to browse and load them directly into the server they're playing on.

For every prop uploaded, all you need to do is supply the .bls of the prop you want to submit and enter a few tags describing what you've submitted to allow users to easily browse similar submissions they're looking for. RTB Buffet will then process your save file and determine any custom bricks/items/vehicles required to load the prop and will also generate a number of different screenshots you can pick from to showcase your submission.

Users browsing the system (either via an in-game client like the mod manager or via the website) can search by tag to find what they're looking for easily. They'll be able to see all kinds of details about the build before loading it including the recommended colorset and a preview of the colors that would be used if you loaded it into your server with your existing colorset. You'd also be able to see all the custom add-ons you'd be recommended to install to load the prop with easy links to download these via the mod manager. Hitting the load button would give the user a temp brick similar to the duplicator which would allow them to place the prop in the server and then do whatever they want with it.

It'd be great to hear your ideas about this new service. Let me know how you'd intend to use the service and what kind of things you'd be uploading and I'll do my best to make sure the service allows you to do it. More community discussion on the kind of ideas this feature encompasses can be found here: http://forum.blockland.us/index.php?topic=211093.0

As always, suggestions, feedback and questions are welcome in the thread.

 Badspot's Block Party - Halloween

Since it's now officially October I figured it was probably close enough to Halloween to actually make a thread about this build. The theme is Halloween (clearly) and the idea is to leverage the new shaders from the latest update to create some really cool and scary effects. The environment has been set up with super low ambient light which makes this a great opportunity to try out some really creative effects with lights and particles to create a spooky atmosphere for your build.

The usual Halloween add-ons are back on the server which include scary sound effects, no jets, pumpkins, gore and your player light now flickers like a candle. In addition to this there's also a new official door add-on being trialled on the server which is definitely worth checking out - so even if you don't feel like building, join the server anyway and have a look around.

RTB 4
So the long-awaited RTB 4 is now available for download. You can either use the in-game auto-updater or the download link below. The original topic in the add-ons forum died of old age so I'll probably move this over there after a bit. The most notable new feature is the friends list/chat system which replaces the IRC client. The full list of features is as follows:

  • Friends List - RTB Connect is a custom chat system built specifically for Blockland which allows you to keep a list of all your friends and talk to them, invite them to servers and see what they're up to. In addition to the friends list there are also public chat rooms you can join much like the old RTB 3 IRC Client. In future versions you'll also be able to create your own.

  • In-Game Add-On Manager - This system will allow you to browse Add-Ons submitted to the RTB Add-Ons System, comment on them, rate them and finally download and install them without ever having to leave Blockland.

  • Online Add-On Browser - To go with the In-Game Add-On Manager, We've also got an Online version of this which is connected to our forums. Using this system you can submit your Add-Ons to our system, to be downloaded by users ingame!

  • Player Activity Tracking - Information about what server you're on, and how long you've been playing are sent to our Web Server so people can see who is currently playing Blockland and where.

  • Server Information Broadcasting - Information about the server you're hosting is sent to our Web Server such as the players on it, and even what Add-Ons you've enabled.

  • Colorset Management - Instead of having to copy a text document to a folder to change your colorset, you can now use our Colorset Manager that allows you to download Colorsets from the RTB System, preview them, and then apply them before you start your server, without ever having to leave Blockland.

  • Ingame Server Manager - The Ingame Server Manager will allow your Super Admins to manage your server by controlling the Auto Admin list, all the server preferences etc.

  • Game Tips on Loading - The Infomaniac will now give you information about Blockland when you're loading a server, so you can learn more about the intricacies of the game!

  • Server Information - When you attempt to join an RTB Server, you'll be presented with an information screen which will show you all the players on the server, and all the add-ons the server has.

  • Auto-Updater - RTB will automatically notify you when an update has become available and will allow you to download and install it immediately.

Known Issues

  • If you're having trouble getting the user context menus to work, remove Iban's CityRP Gui add-on.
  • Don't add more than about 80 friends at the moment or you won't be able to reconnect.
  • Sometimes if non-friends message you their name will be blank.

Download

Installation
Just dump System_ReturnToBlockland.zip into your add-ons folder which is probably in your My Documents/Blockland/Add-Ons

General Discussion / RTB4 Beta
« on: April 10, 2011, 12:08:24 PM »
RTB4 is now in early beta and 50 people are allowed to apply by following this link:

RTB4 Beta Signup

You'll need to have an RTB forum account in order to apply. Before you do - a few things:

  • This is an early beta so features may be broken or missing entirely.
  • You should only apply if you're an active player. Inactive people will be removed to make space for more.
  • This early beta is primarily to test the chat server and see how well it copes, if all goes well another 50 people will be allowed to apply.

Thanks.

Further information on RTB4.

Could someone type up a tutorial about this and I'll sticky it. There are too many people re-including default gun sounds/particles or vehicles sounds/particles/whatever when they could just use forceRequiredAddon and reduce their datablock consumption by like 80%.
