A review about getting banned from a game while you have a VAC ban on record kinda speaks volumes. Good review.

General Discussion / Re: Would it be possible to port Blockland to Unity?
« on: January 13, 2014, 05:13:53 AM »
I didn't realize that everything would have to be remade including add-on's. What if there was a separate version of Blockland and it had a different name which ran Unity? And what if this version of Blockland became free and no longer worked on? I think people would be a lot more satisfied.

I for one think this is a fantastic idea. I fully support Badspot spending a few years making a new free Blockland on Unity - maybe he can even make the old version of Blockland free too, he's probably rich now. Lets start a change.org petition guys - let's MAKE this happen.

Suburb your brother looks like a neckbeard

Having a beard on your neck doesn't make you a neckbeard - what are you, handicapped?

Because it was private message.

Only 10 people knew about this before you, like someone previously stated.

Don't be an starfish and let others be an starfish with ID discrimination.

Translation: We don't want other people to be able to have 2k ids too, it's meant to be just for us!!

Eat a richard, seriously.

How many lines per minute or lines per second does it take to disable the console output?

This has been disabled for the past few weeks.

To put it another way, if every single active user currently playing Blockland went through the ad.fly link, you'd earn, what, $30?  That's a pretty poor ROI for a nuisance of that scale.

On the other hand, Ephi, you're the absolute last person that should be talking about monetizing a value-add for Blockland. By your narrow definition, your thread about the RTB hosting service breaks the rules about no advertising.

You created it, it added value to Blockland, and you ask others to pay for it.  Why should you be more equal than other content creators?

It's non-profit and your interpretation of the no advertising rule is not good.

That's not what I'm implying, I'm saying that I'd like the appreciation to extend far enough that I can add a secondary download that people can choose so that I can have a chance of making a small amount of money based on the amount of people that enjoy my work.

No, that's exactly what you're saying. You're not satisfied enough with people enjoying and vocally appreciating your work - you need money in your pocket before it's worth your while. Your motives are clear and I've stated my opinion on them, I'm done here.

Appreciation does not have to be measured in dollars and cents.

Like I've said Ephi, I'm not saying I'm entitled to it by any means, I'm just saying that I'd prefer to be appreciated by the moderators for doing these tasks.

The fact that you refer to your add-on making as a "task" shows you're not really doing it selflessly. You're doing it as a chore and you want something out of it. That's the wrong way to approach a community like this and I suggest you look elsewhere for that "appreciation."

You can put a donation link if you want but the rules are clear on advertising/referral schemes.

It's not leeching like you're making it out to be though, we're monetizing our work, not your site, that's what I'm trying to say.
I'm sorry to say it but I'm pretty sure it's a general consensus that Blockland wouldn't be the same game without a modding community, if no add-ons were created, I feel safe assuming there would be a much smaller active playerbase.

Is that mutually beneficial?  Like you're making someone who put 2-3 hours into a mod, and asking someone to watch a 5-10 second advertisement so they can get some sort of physical gain from their work, out to be an unethical leecher.

Your work only exists because of Blockland - the same can't be said in reverse. Sure the modding community is important but that's because it's members care about the game and the community and not the money they might make if they release something.

If you're looking to make money off what you do, go do it professionally or find a community that lets modders monetize their work. If you care about Blockland and want to make neat things for the community then stick around and do that - but don't expect or feel entitled to compensation for it.

But you've worked on and hosted RTB for years now, for absolutely free.  That's dandy and all, but you still created third party content for a game, and that content is your work, from what I know you have RTB under a CC license as well.

You've just stated facts here and not made a point so I have nothing to say to that.

You guys are monetizing Steam's userbase right now, I mean its as simple as that.  Why do we have to take satisfaction in not making a penny off of our work, yet you guys get to take satisfaction AND make money off of the same field of work?  It doesn't seem fair to me, however that's completely in my own opinion.

Blockland's deal with Steam is a mutually beneficial business arrangement, meaning both parties profit and that both parties agreed to set terms. That's entirely different to trying to turn a few quick cents by throwing advertising links up on someone else's forum without permission. You're just trying to monetize someone else's site traffic and it's not ethical.
