an brown townogy can be made here to public utilities companies. its just not economical or possible to have hundreds of individual companies service the area PG&E services, for example. water, electric, and gas services form a natural monopoly due to the extremely high initial cost to set up, and low cost to add new members to the service area. regulation is really the only way to prevent consumer exploitation, besides some sort of government-run company akin to how communism worked in the ussr.

the failure here is not the fact AT&T and other network companies form an oligopoly, the failure is on the government to create and enforce regulations to protect the consumers. people need to stop allowing political motivations/infighting blind themselves from handling growing world issues with reason and care.

its inevitable that large corporations become the backbone of internet infrastructure. its just too impossible to hold individuals accountable for network failures, physical or security - a corporation can be held liable, has the resources to fix issues, can implement large changes in standards (eg ipv4 >> ipv6), and can be audited (assuming the government actually does it). if the infrastructure was fragmented, it would be too hard to change and audit.

especially given how quickly internet technology is evolving, a distributed system just wouldnt work. plus you open lots of people up to exploitation through man-in-the-middle/on-path attacks - i strongly doubt a distributed infrastructure would have consistent and reliable security across all network nodes, considering how few people are actually aware of how computer and internet security works.

phantos dont fight for something like this on an internet lego forum, theres pretty much no point lol

you'll just get dismissed and maybe this topic will show up on some future background search into your internet habits and you probably dont want to give said detectives any extra material to work with.

Games / Re: Ace Attorney Trilogy is now available on Steam

I'm glad you've seen the light my child. The church of superior gamemode welcomes you. Our divine Lord and savior Tournaments gives her blessing. Yeah our God is a woman so that's how you know our opinions are super correct

Real talk though ace attorney and ghost tricks are a few of my favorite games of all time and are real enigmas in game design. The fact that games with such stuffty to non existent gameplay can be held up purely by great character and story design is a real feat in video game production. It'd be cool to harvest thpse story oriented juices and inject them into a game with fun mechanics but so rarely can people pull that off without both dimensions fighting each other
games like ace attorney and other story-focused stuff (ex dangonrompa, firewatch) feel like a non-stereotypical "visual novel" to me - if the stereotypical visual novel is a romance, ace attorney is a mystery novel. dangonrompa would be like a suspense novel.

balancing story with gameplay is really hard cause fundamentally you want player engagement/immersion, and players generally lose a bit of that when going from pulling off difficult combos to reading and enjoying story/character development. often the people interested in story arent as interested in mechanics, and vice versa, so designers have to make tradeoffs.

i think its a good thing cause it makes games that manage to balance their mechanics and story out that much more special. like the colorset in bl - with a limited palette, you're forced to be more creative and make generalizations rather than just copying source material verbatim. the same reason why fine art still has appeal in a world where photography and high-fidelity computer effects are common and easy.

maybe slightly sarcastic it's just a way of life that people need something to hate

I know it's legitimate alot of the time but I've seen some dismissal of interesting or legitimate topics/opinions he's posted just because it's him

I understand with tony but he's earned that over the course of like 10+ years.
well thats the thing, the topic itself isnt dismissed, just matthews opinions. i get what you mean though, some topics do devolve into matthew post discussion threads, but fortunately hes been posting far less of his own opinions compared to a year ago, and thus allowing a discussion to happen.

Controversial leftists (right-wingers) are all about blowing things out of proportion and nothing amounts to anything in the end. Hillary was not locked up, Annoying Orange's tax history is shifty and without proper presence, the wall isn't here yet, etc - even UKIP thinks they have actual grounds politically despite looking like the clock watcher club. Hell they even continue to deny that the Tiananmen Square Massacre was performed by undercover Jewish proxies and that bath salts contain micromachines within their grains that get absorbed into your body to work as a human botnet.
this post..... it scares me. im not sure what is real anymore.

during the first year or two it was ok

a few years in though it spiraled out of control with those massive text dumps and i stopped reading. plus the trolls felt like a side distraction that drew away from the core story, though afaik at this point they pretty much are the core storyline.
problem sleuth was a lot better due to the limited scope and not trying to overreach itself

I don't entirely understand what this means... Any context? Information? Anything???
due to net neutrality not being a thing currently, at&t has been able to threaten a blackout of viacoms cable networks (tv channels like mtv, nickelodeon, comedy central) on their service until they reach a negotiated deal with at&t

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-03-25/viacom-at-t-resolve-contract-dispute-keeping-channels-on

it didnt happen since a deal was made, but this shows why net neutrality (and similar laws) need to exist in the age of mass media conglomerates that do high-level filtering of all the media we consume under their services.
