the main problem is that runescape is so much more simplified with stats and everything that the game isn't really as enticing anymore
i still play, sure, but mainly because grinding is a ton easier now
everything about combat is less rewarding; barrows gloves used to be greatly rewarding for its good stats all-round and its massive strength bonus for the gloves slot. goliath gloves took it even further with its melee weapon capabilities.
now everything is simplified to a huge extent; everything is practically either standard or power type. barrows gloves are still hybrid, but give a mediocre armor and life bonus and don't even give offensive benefits like they were once popular for. hybrid minigame armor is completely hybrid now- vanguard is just as good for magic as is trickster or battlemage. goliath gloves just give a stuffty ranged-only damage reflection to the enemy and can't be used as a weapon either.
i think the worst part is how jagex has fitted everything into level niches and doesn't want to really make anything stand out at all, regardless of how expensive or hard an item is to get. snakeskin is no longer valuable because of carapace armor which is waaay easier to make, batwing robes are on par with rune for being a fraction of the cost (putting mages at a big advantage at this level), and you have corrupt ancient warrior's equipment have stuffty stats even though they're so hard to come by and have them on par with steel weapons even when they used to be on par with their normal versions statistically.
no weapons at all give an advantage over another of the same class. dragon daggers are cheaper and have an easier quest requirement than scimitars, and are just as effective in PvP because stab/crush/slash now only applies to monsters. some things even become obsolete entirely this way- dragon kiteshields are completely dominant to square shields (they even cost less) and even then obby shields cost a fraction of the amount for the same exact stats. it's not even power-type either.
jagex really butchered the worth of equipment with the eoc. legacy or the combat improvements are not enough to fix this either.
