Suggestions & Requests / Re: Blockland for Linux
« on: November 04, 2012, 03:55:12 PM »
i can confirm the server part
not so much the game part, it's a bit slower.
Through Wine with 12x CSAA (8x CSAA, 4x MSAA) compared to Windows with the same AA settings, I get a much greater video performance than Windows by running it under Wine, but sluggish mouse movements is easily overcome. Overall I'd go with Wine for the 19 FPS difference, despite the mouse being somewhat sluggish.

want to play games? windows

want to be artistic? iOS

want to do neither of those things? linux
Seriously? Are you implying Linux can't handle games? Are you implying Linux doesn't have equivalents to OS X design programs? There's plenty of alternatives to programs that either OS X and Windows, if there's no alternative, you can always use Wine. Simply saying you can't make art or play games on Linux makes me sick.

So, I am planning on purchasing a custom PC, and I have come up with a list of parts.

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/mpSB

Just wanted to know if this list is pretty good, since I am fairly unexperienced with PC parts.

It'd be nice to hear some recommendations. I'd also like to note I have a fair budget. I am going to sell my Mac for around $700 - $1000, plus I have some money with me.
TBH onboard audio is good enough for most people. Unless you're some sort of audiophile, a sound card is not needed, as that board has great onboard audio. You could put that money from the sound card into an SSD.

Even if the world was going to end, I'd rather spend it with family instead of on Blockland.

How do I tell if one is mandatory for my system?
Typically it should say "Microsoft Corp" or similar next to it. Most startup programs aren't vital, but some systems need special tools so I wouldn't disable everything.
I think its a first gen i7
It is.

You fond with ball mouses by any chance?
'tis called a trackball. It's really useful if you're using a surface not meant for an optical mouse (i.e. couch arms, bed pillows, etc.)
Either way for a solution under $75 that doesn't overwhelm anyone I'd personally recommend the Razer DeathAdder.
@Beachbum: Restore your computer back to default? Make sure you have your important files backed up.
That's a terrible method. There are plenty of ways to fix his computer without making any hasty decisions.
CCleaner being one of the methods to fix registry issues, and clean up stuff left over from other programs.
msconfig for disabling services and startup programs he doesn't use or need.
Please lern2 before giving bullstuff answers, kthx.

Issue two and three are linked. Yell at Microsoft.
Issue one can be fixed by pushing Win Key + R, typing msconfig, hitting enter, and disabling services and startup programs you don't use or don't need.
