An update to Chrome magically broke compatibility with XP SP2, seeing as my server can't use it, and my virtual machines can't use it.
Seeing as you've gone through the basic troubleshooting steps (reinstalling, uninstalling recently installed programs, restarting windows,) you might want to use another browser for the time being (personally recommend Opera for being better than chrome at loving everything,) or upgrade to SP3. (provided you're not using SP3)

Most laptops don't get installation disks and most desktops don't get those either. You rarely get recovery discs anymore too. Nowadays it's all on the hard drive and you have to make recovery discs yourself.
How uber gay. Last I remember when a computer didn't come with an installation disk, we phoned Dell and one was sent out, free of charge. That of course was 2004 and things may be different now, so your method would probably be better than mine should the resource not be available.

Seeing as I've a retail computer from 2011, the software (Microsoft Office 2010 and special drivers) appears to be on separate disks. Maybe I just got a high-quality computer and most manufacturers don't give two forgets, but I'd still install with the installation disk distributed with the computer

Any important software that is bundled with it comes on a separate disk. The rest of it is typically bloatware.
Drivers are available from the manufacturer's website as well, and Windows 7 includes plenty of generic drivers.

...or just back up your important files to external media, order a new hard drive, replace it once it's dead and reinstall Windows.
There's entire subsections on most websites for Laptop hard drives so as long as you pick a SATA one, you're fine.

stop making unbiased judgements on Windows 8 considering you haven't tried it.

OP should download VirtualBox and install it there to see if it's right for him

Update, As much as windows 8 looks like poop in my opinion. Its more stable than Vista.
After SP1, Vista was a whole lot more stable, and is as stable as Windows 7 without a service pack. lern2windows

OP should download VirtualBox and install it there to see if it's right for him

Is he the one in the Cowardly Lion outfit?
Clearly he's in the shrubbery behind the people in front
