Suggestions & Requests / Re: New Build saving
« on: March 04, 2007, 05:35:42 AM »
if someone wants to build something and allow it to be shared, great. if someone builds on another persons server where saving was (for example) disabled, then he should know it and build on a different server or his own server. I'm saying WE should have the option of protecting our stuff if WE want to. Not everyone will, thats up to those people.

Gee, we better disable screenshots too because people can take screenshots of your stuff and claim that it's theirs. You guys aren't thinking this through.
I think you are being very stubborn here and kinda condascending. This is clearly an issue for many people and you are calling your "customers" dumb stupid kids. Granted a lot of em are, but we aren't all 12. Screenshots don't mean jack, its the actual build that can be manipulated and loaded into someone elses server. For me its not a matter of someone claiming it as their own, its the fact that MY server would no longer be the place to see MY work.

Maybe this could all be on an option. If you guys don't care that builds are pinched and messed with, then leave saving on for clients. If, like me, you don't want it taking away, give us an option to disable client saving. It didn't use to be possible !! Just telling us to password the server or play in single player doesn't let people see your work now does it. My current build is also interactive so screenshots alone are not enough. Its to be experienced. A 5 part maze over 3 floors, its a good challenge and many people give up cos its too tough. My server was a popular place to come because of this maze, and now it won't be cos it'll be on a bunch of diff servers.

Also, think about this. You are promoting sharing of builds. Someone makes a cool tower, someone else makes a cool church and someone else makes a cool pixel art thing. Then every server you go into you see the same old stuff being shown off, slightly modded on each one with someone elses name slapped on it. Its not the direction to go i think. Different servers should be different and have unique cool stuff to look at.

I've seen 4 different servers with the same damn city in it now. Each one having 1 new building somewhere. Its getting dull server hopping now, cos everythings getting samey.

Listen to your customers Badspot. The customer is always right :)

Help / Re: Brick Saving by clients
« on: March 04, 2007, 04:40:42 AM »
If i was building a piece of sh1t pyramid, then who cares if its stolen, but i'm not. But hey, thanks for your insightful input.

If my build was on 10 different servers, then why would i bother hosting a server where people can come to see and enjoy my maze and hard work. For me, running servers and making my servers a cool place to come to was half the fun. And in RTB my servers were enjoyed and always filled with busy little builders. Thats now taken away by the new saving method.

This is the 1 main fault i see with retail (apart from a lack of jetlag setting). I'm kinda disappointed :(

Help / Brick Saving by clients
« on: March 03, 2007, 08:28:22 PM »
I recall that ownership was planned in the saves but a bug forced removal at least for now.

My current maze build may prove popular and i'd like to keep it to myself, run it in my server, and keep control of it. With the way people can save bricks currently it wouldn't take long for it to be appearing in many different servers. It would no longer be mine then or be unique.

Basically, is admin only saving planned, or some form of "you can't save my bricks but you can save your own" planned for a future update ?

Well, total time to build i guess is around 12 hours total, on and off for 4 nights or so. A couple of times i had to stop due to headaches setting in, so i might not break into a sweat, but its certainly not painless. For me this is a good way to relax in the evening once the kids are to bed. I don't watch tv, so i like something enjoyable to pass the time. Much like doing jigsaws as a hobby.

Thanks to everyone for the kind words. Makes it even more enjoyable to do.

Well, my next build is a remake of my UberMaze. Some have asked me for it and it was my most popular build from before and i'd love to redo it. Of course this time round it'll be slightly different and have much nicer lighting. And less lag, thats always a bonus :)

Thanks everyone. Its 100% done now and final brick tally is 16784.

I have added pulse to some of the colours, made a viewing platform and tweaked some bits on it. The server will be up again tomorrow so people can view it, and after tomorrow i will start a new project.

Now to decide what it'll be...

So far its looking great, but many optimisations in the build would reduce your brick count greatly. Badspot may have made a superb job on brick view optimising, and reduced lag by a country mile, but at 18,000 bricks or more lag will start to set in. Just a heads up for you. Be good to see development ;0)

Fractals/mandelbrots, not much difference i think...

Anyway, its from a prepped image. I had to trim and scale and pixel resize the original and edit the pallette to 16 colours. Then change the colours in the image to match whats available in the game. I have the image open on one screen and blockland open on the other. Nothing hard about it really, it just takes time to get right.

Relaunching server now if anyone wants a peek closer up.
