So after
posting about going to Turkey a couple of days ago, I arrived safely. Now I was actually going to make a photo collection/blog of my travels earlier, however I needed a break from the forums, (it's a stressful place) so now after three days of ups and downs; I am ready to tell you all about my Turkey Travels of Terror. I'll be updating this daily until I arrive home, the current day is in the title.
The First Day -72 Hours Remaining-Well I had to get up at 2am, (I had barely slept) and get to the airport for our six o'clock flight. The drive there was fine, and getting through the airport to boarding wasn't too difficult. The flight to Turkey is four hours, with a two-hour-ahead time difference, having us arrive at about mid-day. Now we were meant to be picked up at the airport and taken to the apartment we were staying at, however the taxi driver was half an hour late, this was sort of fine though and we were in the shade relaxing. After he did arrive an drove us to our apartment, this is where things started to go a little downhill...
We got into our apartment and the first thing we noticed was the smell, we sort of just didn't care and after being awake for 24+ hours; we just wanted to relax. We later realised that the whole place was filled with rat droppings and sofa/bed stains. The guy showing us to where we were staying was there, however he didn't speak any English. Obviously we didn't feel comfortable where we were staying, and we couldn't complain because no one could speak good enough English. (apart from the guy in charge that organized the holiday; however we was mysteriously not in the country at the time)
We later decided to move hotels to an obviously clean one (it was a five/four star), and the cost was pretty good. We had to repack and try to explain what was wrong to the people in charge of the place at the time, even though they didn't speak any English. After another long drive we made it to our new hotel, which is absolutely lovely. We found that we had our own private pool, which was connected to the main one. We didn't really care that much about this though, as all we wanted was a clean bed. It was about nine o'clock when we started to settle down, I was just on the verge of sleep when the most annoying thing possible happened. Since this is Turkey, the main religion is Islam, meaning that five times a day; the Adhan call to prayer will sound. Obviously this had to sound right when I was about to fall to sleep, from the speaker right outside my loving apartment. I'm also forgetting to mention that I have a phobia of the call to prayer (it sounds so loving creepy). I was basically in tears at this point, I was so tired after this long day and Allah had to make it even worse, but I finally got to sleep, and that takes us to day two.
The Second DaySo it turns out that the call to prayer sounds at 5am as well, by this point I was actually considering destroying the speaker that the Adhan emitted from and then blame it on Allah if anyone asked (god works in mysterious ways). I couldn't really be bothered to get out of bed to do this though, and I ended up sleeping in until mid-day. After awaking, we decided to take a dip in our private pool while later checking out the main one. Not really anything else worth mentioning that happened this day, apart from the fact I bought a wood-carved animal slingshot thing (
like this).
The Third DayDay three was definitely one I'll remember for my destruction. After doing our normal 'wake up, get something to eat and chill by the pool' routine, we ended up realising that there was actually a pool bar. Obviously I had to get a drink, so I ordered something which had a LOT of stuff in it (orange juice, pineapple, rum, I'm pretty sure there was actually some lemonade in there too), this is where the first occurrence of my clumsiness began, however. So I ended up dropping this pretty expensive drink into the pool water without even taking a sip from it. It was fine though, the bar tender was a pretty cool guy and just gave got me a new one free of charge. The rest of the day went pretty well up until dinner, this is when I managed to really piss off our waiter. So after we finished our evening meal and got up to the leave; I accidentally pulled the entire table cloth off and broke several plates and glasses. I'm not really sure how it happened, I must of stepped on it and pulled it somehow (even though it was a pretty short table cloth). Anyway after I realised what I had just done, the entire room went silent with everyone starring at me. The worst part was that the waiter looked like a mix between anger and upset, he had that "I'm going to have to clean that up" face. As much as he looked like he wanted to strangle me, he simply passed it off as an accident and told us not to worry. I'm not sure I've ever exited a restaurant that fast before, in fact I can still picture all those faces starring at me, it was horrible.
