This is a fun little free game that takes mechanics from both and mashes them together. Fun for an hour or 30 minutes.

Off Topic / China agrees to support UN sanctions against North Korea

China's Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei told reporters Friday Beijing is to support U.N. sanctions in response to the North's fourth nuclear test, but with an eye toward denuclearization and defending the peace and stability of the region.

A Chinese defense official in Seoul reiterated the support for sanctions, pointing the tests were in violation of the Sept. 19 Joint Statement agreed upon during the six-party talks in Beijing.

This is big. North Korea is overstepping it's boundaries by testing nuclear weapons, and China is starting to pull the reigns in on North Korea.

Darkest Hour: Europe '44-'45 is a total conversion modification for Tripwire's Red Orchestra: Ostfront '44-'45 that takes place during the Western European Theater of World War II. Depicting battles such as Hill 400, Caen, and the Omaha Beach landings, among others, Darkest Hour aims to provide a realistic and authentic 64 player multiplayer that is intuitive and natural to play while holding historical accuracy and realism to the highest regard. Hip-firing requires you to freely aim your weapon, recoil is high and punishes players who blindly spray, hits to the center of mass are often fatal in single hits, bullet drop requires you to compensate your aim, and suppressing fire interrupts your aim and can force entire squads to the ground. The maps are very large and can stretch out to 2km, leaving ample opportunity for the game's wide array of historical vehicles to manoeuvre and fight. Tank crews on opposing sides will use vehicles such as the M18 Hellcat, M4A1 (76) Sherman, Panzer III, and King Tiger to support infantry and destroy other tanks. Darkest Hour provides the scale and combined arms warfare of Arma 3 without being obtuse to play, while offering a much more realistic and authentic experience than games like Battlefield or Insurgency. The game this is a mod of, RO:Ostfront, is currently $2.50 on the Steam Store.

You can run this game on a toaster.

GAMEPLAY + TIPS
  • Pick the rifleman class at first to accomdate yourself to the controls and general working order of things. Taking an important class like anti-tank or squad leader from the beginning will just harm yourself and your team
  • The German rifleman's main weapon, the Karabiner 98k, is an accurate weapon, but the M1 Garand for all intents and purposes is a better weapon. Avoid close range fights with allied riflemen as much as possible, as they can get off 4 shots for every 1 of yours.
  • Germany often has the defensive advantage- the MG42 and MG34 are superior to the M1918 Browning machine gun, and the Panther and Tiger tanks can defeat any allied tank in a 1v1. Use that to your advantage and hold the points.
  • Tankers- please don't use AP when fighting infantry. Remember that you often have HE (sometimes Flechette) rounds for your main tank gun, when fighting infantry, use those.

My Skype account was compromised earlier yesterday. As a precautionary measure Skype suspended my account. Good on them for taking it down before it got out of hand.

I'm guessing it had something to do with the compromise in Steam security judging by the date. I've had this account for 3 years and have never had a problem with security before. Whatever, it's not like I actually use it.

Anyways, just keep safe and monitor all of your accounts for a while.

It was a gang related incident. It's strange because violence like this usually strays away from the high-rise apartments and college buildings that surround the area. I'd expect this to happen in the projects or Bedford Stuy, but not near a gentrified area.

It's a little scary because I passed through that area, right in front of the Applebees, just an hour earlier on my walk back home.

Games / new doom multiplayer looks pretty generic

looks uninteresting and a little boring, actually. i mean i'm sure it plays okay, but it just seems like a half-hearted and tacked-on multiplayer mode.

Off Topic / Taking a game programming class...
« on: September 10, 2015, 06:43:09 PM »
One of the requirements that are really stressed is that there's supposed to be no gun shooting, weapon use, or (it appears) any real violence of any kind. I can understand that they don't want students to make games about shooting up schools or have them makes games that would offend their parents/the media, but the "safe" example the teacher said was "two characters can throw, like, muffins and pillows at each other" for combat.

I suppose this would be easier to swallow if this were a freshmen class, but we're seniors. Nobody here is below the age of 16 or 17. I'm pretty sure we can handle more than two stick figures throwing pillows at each other.

Clarification - None of us in the class are going to make violent games, if we did the responsibility would fall on our teacher, and we all really like our teacher. It just sucks that we're restricted in such a way.
