I made a blog entry about this elsewhere, but The LEGO Movie Videogame is one of the worst video games I've ever had the disfortune of playing.

It's completely ironic how it utterly misses the point of the movie. Hell, not only that, but it also takes some of the movies best jokes and ruins them.

That said, I didn't realise how easy it would be to mod the game, either. QuickBMS FTW!

I got vids on my YouTube channel if you're interested.

if you don't know a lot about coding, you shouldn't work with something as low-level as C++.
I learnt C a long time ago. My problem is not Syntax, it's programmer logic (i.e., I need to need to be able to code X, Y, Z, and in order to do that I need to do A, B, C in this certain way).

One who wishes to learn the fine arts of coding should attend a professional online school of learning
A quite popular named one is Codeacademy
It covers all forms of programming...related to Web Design.

I've found a few good tuts on using SDL, so I'll look through these for now.

Sounds like you're doing some serious stuff. This was just a project for my grade 11 high school class. Do you have a youtube channel that I can check out your animations from?
Not yet, since this is my first stop motion (and the college's) and the only stuff I've posted are private test vids. I'll let everyone know when I've got something decent to show.

Do you use clay at the bottom of their feet so they don't fall over?
Actually, I build a rail using those 1x16 bricks which have the technic holes in the walls, and then I use the black pegs to keep them standing. Amazingly, because of their large feet, it works perfectly. Then I simply have a sheet of green screen cover the rail.

The problem with clay is that it would probably melt or crack under the studio lights.

That's gotta be a bike, right?

So, I'm very poor with coding skill (I've been studying theory and making mods all this time) and now I'm trying to practice my programming abilities. Anybody got any ideas on where I should start?

Right now I've learnt the basics of C and C++ and I've started practicing with Allegro, and I'm well versed in Unrealscript, but I'm not sure if that's going to be enough. I have Game Dev next term which means I'll probably be doing some minor coding, but it's not Game On where you actually start building games.

I do my best never to regret anything, but I've certainly had job opportunities and party invites I probably should have acted on.

You're not very good at this PR thing.
Once the job is over I'm allowed to speak my mind about it. It'd be pretty stupid if Ubisoft owned my soul forevvaaahhh.

Goddangit i want this game.
Anyone know if you're just gonna be able to go around killing people? You usually cant in ubisoft games.
In the build I played with there was no penalty, but that's probably because they hadn't coded in yet.

Doesn't really prove anything. Want to show us some sort of event press pass or whatever they hand out to employees?

Official Pass plus Shirt, as well as my stuffty marking job. Anybody who was there can clearly tell where the pass is from but whatever.

As has been said, I really really hope these rumours are bullstuff and that if I get the game it's incredible and my faith in AAA gaming is restored, but at the moment things aren't looking too grand.

?
Nah, using Hero Factory sets and college equipment (blue/green-screens, running rigs, walking rigs, camera tracks etc).

I'm doing the same thing for my Animation college class.

This was very well done, the story, sound and all the little details were great :D

Not to be *that* starfish, but if you were interested in doing more, here's a couple things you should work on next time;

  • You should try to up the frame-rate to 24/25, because that way you're going to a lot smoother animation.
  • Definitely make sure your camera is stable.
  • Did you do any forward planning for this? One of the biggest things we learn in our class is about keyframes, inbetweens and charts. Basically, pros will plan out the entire animation in drawing first, and then use their planned animation as a guide for how things in LEGO move. You don't even need to draw fantastically, so long as you've got a good idea of what motion each character should take.
  • One thing you should add is "anticipation". You'll notice in a long of animated movies, before the character performs an action, they'll actually swing the opposite way and essentially tell the audience what they're about to do. For example, a character who is about to run will usually lean back for a second and then launch themselves.
