So recently I've been having some trouble with Bestbuy's Geeksquad Support. I've decided to chronicle my dealings with them on this thread. Like any good story--it will be separated into chapters.

Chapter 1: The Crash
One morning about, I booted up my computer, to see it crash within moments. This repeated multiple times. I opened the statistics panel for the PC, and saw that the CPU fan had N/A speed. The fan was out. A simple task--to replace a fan. To Bestbuy!

So I arrive at Bestbuy with my brother and tell them what the problem is. They explain I'll need a new CPU fan and with a printed list of my computer stats show me what they believe to be best. I purchase one, and return home to go about the replacement. As it turns out, it is not a simple task to replace a CPU fan. In the end, I did it (with help from a knowledgeable friend) and booted up the PC.

Crash.

Chapter 2: The $233 Solution
So after my knowledgeable friend admits they are stumped, I return to Bestbuy. They explain that I can return the fan for a full refund and have GeekSquad check out my PC. I ask how much it will cost for this one visit--but alas, it is a subscription. We end up purchasing a $233 2-year Subscription to Geeksquad Services. Now they can fix all our computer problems--right?

So they take a look inside and a day later give me a call. They state that the computer's power distributor is broken, and as such stopped providing power to the fan, which works fine. They can replace it with a new one, and my PC will be good as new. They predict it will take 3 days, but in the end I had it back in just one and a half. Fantastic.

Chapter 3: Launching the PC
So I eagerly boot up my computer--and it works! Huzzah! My woes are of the past. Wait...

All of my Desktop Icons are gone. They put them in an "Icons" folder, and decided to replace them with a single large "Geeksquad" Icon. It's not that big of a deal, but I did have them sorted into different areas. Oh well.

Then I notice--they uninstalled BitTorrent. Seriously? Nothing about the program is inherently illegal and I would prefer if the tech team I pay almost $300 doesn't decide to play moral police. Sigh.

Also, CheatEngine and Gimp are gone. CheatEngine only allows you to cheat in single-player games, but perhaps they thought it looked suspicious. But Gimp? Really? Maybe they are in Adobe's pocket.

Then I noticed they cleared ALL of my browsing history, login info, and bookmarks? Seriously? It's a small hassle to log back in to every site but why would they factory reset my browser when I just wanted a fan fixed.

Oh well. The computer works, and in time I recover the losses. It can't get worse, right?

Chapter 4: The Crash II
So at exactly 3:00 AM this morning Windows announced that it was ready to install Windows 10. I was very excited for this, and eagerly rebooted my computer so as to get the prompt. There was just one problem.

It didn't turn back on. The computer lit up, the fans hummed, but there was absolutely no image on my monitor. It said "No Signal". I made sure the cords were attached, and tried again. Nope. Oh well, I still have that Bestbuy subscription. Let's see how they handle this.

Chapter 5: The Revelation
Bestbuy calls me later in the day and says that my PC is screwed. There is "sticky residue" coating the motherboard, thick dust coating the machinery, and the fan is clogged with dirt.

The fan they closely examined days prior.

The monitor isn't getting power because the Power Distributor was installed faultily, and appears to be broken.

The power distributor they installed.

Obviously I'm upset, asking how none of this came to light when they held my computer for almost 4 days. The woman on the phone was useless. I asked what they could do about the motherboard and they told me it was totally fried. I would have to purchase a new one, and also lose all data on the PC.

So they failed to notice the many flaws ingrained with my PC the first time they examined it, thus leading to it's destruction mere days later. Sigh. A new motherboard was probably inevitable after all these years, and perhaps they or the computer provider will be able to give me some sort of discount.

So what are they gonna do about their faulty installation of the power distributor?

Chapter 6: The Rage
They explain that the power distributor is ruined from the faultily installation, and will have to be thrown out. They say that I will have to buy a second one for them to install.

Seriously? They broke a piece of machinery and demand I pay for it?

I explain that THEY installed the power distributor mere days prior. I haven't touched the PC since and it is clear that whoever worked the PC screwed something up. She adamantly denies any fault of glorious Besbuy.

Any honestly? I think they are idiots. I've stopped taking their advice on issues and I'll be speaking with some more intelligent individuals about the issue. Let's see what happens next.

Chapter 7: The Light in The Darkness

So later in the day Geeksquad told me that the PC is unfixable and they don't want to waste more time on it. I don't know if it's actually broken for good but here is what they found:

Faultily Installed Power Core (which they installed)
Sticky Residue on the BOTTOM of the Motherboard (seems like a weird place for a spill)
Clogged Fan (which they said was fine a week ago)
Fried Motherboard (Worked flawlessly last visit ₩
Corrupted RAM Stick (Unrelated, I hope)

The most infuriating thing is that they act like the PC has been in bad shape for a long time. Like it never worked.

But there is a hope for me. Best Buy is useless but my computer (A $1500 Digital Storm Vanquish, very good) was purchased exactly 2 years and 1 month ago. I checked and it has a 3-Year Limited Warranty. I contacted them about replacement and they said I would get a call today to discuss it.

tl;dr, Bestbuy breaks my PC, but it is under warranty
Chapter 8: Geeksquad is handicapped

So after speaking with Digital Storm support about a warranty they said they would replace the computer. They also asked some questions about it on the phone. After some work with the computer (now safely in our home) I turned it on--and got to the startup screen!

The support guy said that even if the motherboard wasn't functional the fan should still be running, and it was strange that it wasn't when the PC was booted on. Apparently the fan was broken--clogged with dirt and just generally dysfunctional. The motherboard was functional, but the computer didn't turn on because it rapidly overheated and shut itself off due to a broken CPU fan.

And the best part? Geeksquad believed the motherboard was fried because they got no monitor image. They got no monitor image because they plugged the monitor into the wrong port. I'm not even kidding.

And the "broken power distributor"? That wasn't true. Either they quickly lied to make an excuse not realizing they themselves installed it or they misdiagnosed the issue. The motherboard, while dirty, is fine.  Also there is very little dust in the PC, so it appears Geeksquad was exaggerating to avoid blame.

Turns out we were right from the very beggining. Nothing was ever wrong with the power distributor--it was literally the CPU fan the entire time. Geeksquad installed a new power distributor and cleaned the fan. When the computer worked they immediately assumed "yup, it was the power distributor". Unfortunately the fan was unstable and broke again a few days later.

When the CPU overheated and shut down the computer during launch they assumed the motherboard was fried, because of some unrelated goop on it. They then spun a story about how the PC was filled with dirt and the power distributor had been installed incorrectly, not realizing they had it a few days before.

The corrupted RAM stick is unrelated, but is covered under warranty and Digital Storm are sending us a replacement. The fan can be replaced cheaply and I will do so later today.

Geeksquad offered us a $163 dollar refund because they could not fix the computer. They said they will keep $70 for "diagnosing the issue"... unsuccessfully.

Basically? Geeksquad are incompetent nosy liars. Digital Storm is a great company.
And my computer is OK.

Share horrible customer support stories.

Games / Should I get Elite: Dangerous?
« on: July 20, 2015, 04:39:05 PM »
I don't have much money for Steam games but Elite: Dangerous looks fantastic so gimme some advice forums

my taste in games:
I don't like first person shooters. If a game has shooting that doesn't mean it's bad, but a game like Call of Duty is boring.
I love RPGs. My favorite games are Skyrim and Warband, both medieval RPGs.
I also love Strategy games like Civ 5 or FTL.
My favorite genre is Fantasy but I also like Sci-Fi.
I really like Euro Truck Simulator, but I am a terrible driver and get in so many collisions I quit a lot.
I enjoyed Starmade but felt like it was a little dull.
I love large open-worlds in games.

I figure I should like Elite: Dangerous because I enjoy RPGs and it looks like it has a lot of choices in criminal/trading/mercenary activity. It looks like it has long stretches with not much to do other than listen to podcasts and stuff like Euro Truck Simulator, but I should enjoy it more because I don't constantly have to dodge terrible AI drivers. I figure the world is gonna be pretty dull because while it's huge it's just floating orbs you gotta stay really far away from. The combat isn't too-FPS-y right? I honestly can't tell if most of it is automated or machine-handled or if I actually have to snipe the enemy with every little bullet.

Please don't write: "YES GET IT" just because you are a fan. I dislike a lot of games with strong fanbases like Minecraft and Half-Life 2.
Anyway I don't want to waste $60 so please give me advice, forums. Thanks!

Off Topic / I found Chinese Buzzfeed

So I found a Chinese newspaper for a small town and it's strangely satisfying to click through the low-text articles and look at the images.  It's nice to see Chinese people do the same awful journalism as Americans. I don't know what this is about the pictures are hilarious. The clickbait is all Chinese so I just gotta go by the images.

Site may be NSFW. Local Chinese newspaper so probably not.

Sealand
The only country in which the government are literally the people.

DO YOU LOVE FREEDOM? PIRATES? JETSKIIS? VOTE FOR SEALAND!
http://forum.blockland.us/index.php?topic=282276.0

Sealand is a small offshore oil platform constructed during WW2 and promptly abandoned in International Waters. A British Radio operator, Mr. Roy Bates, claimed dibs on it and siezed it as his home, declaring independance as "Sealand". He opened fire on construction workers who entered the waters and was brought to court in Britain, where it was determined they were on his property inside international waters and therefore tresspassers. While he was away in Britain, a German lawyer hired a group of Dutch Mercenaries to attack the platform on Jetskiis and Speedboats. They took his son hostage and held the island. Mr. Bates had suspected something like this would happen, and stashed automatic weaponry that would be considered illegal in mainland Europe or Britain. The son obtained these weapons, and took the pirates as hostages at gunpoints. When Mr. Bates arrived, he released all mercenaries with a warning, but held the lawyer in prison. He stated that he had commited "Treason against Sealand" and that he would serve a lifelong prison sentence unless Sealand was paid a $35,000 USD fee. Germany asked Britain to address it as a hostage situation, but they replied by stating it was no longer their property or in their waters. Germany sent a team of ambassadors to Sealand via helicopter, where they debated about the release of the prisoner. Eventually the man was released, and nobody dared invade Sealand again. Mike, Roy's son, was named Prince of Sealand, for saving it from the pirates. In 2012, Mr. Bates passed away, leaving Mike Bates as his heir, the King of Sealand.

It's a pretty crazy country and anyone that picks Nigeria over it is a fool.

Discuss Sealand. Vote Sealand. Love Sealand.

Off Topic / BLF: Werewolf - THE FIGHTER FENDS OFF AN ATTACK!
« on: July 08, 2015, 01:12:01 AM »
BLF: Werewolf

Men are found dead all over the village, whenever the moon rises. The peasantry grow angry, and demand blood. Only the seer can tell who the monsters are--but dare they speak up?

BLF: Werewolf is an adaptation of the party game Werewolf (Mafia) that we will play over the forums. Basically one team (The Werewolves) pretend to be the other team (The Villagers) while the villagers go on a mad witch hunt trying to figure out who the werewolves are. Every day the villagers will lynch one or two people they think are werewolves, and every night the werewolves will slay one or two villagers. If the number of werewolves equal the number of villagers, the Werewolves win. If the villagers kill all werewolves, the villagers win. This will be played in real time, with each in-game day taking a day. This means the game will probably take 3-6 days, depending on how many players join.

It's like interactive BLF Hunger Games. Sorta.

The Roles:

Villager: 1-40 players. Will fill up all empty slots and most people will be one.
The Fighter: 1 player. Must be murdered twice in order to die.
The Doctor: 1 player. Picks a person to protect each night, and can pick themselves.
Hunter: 1-2 players. Whenever they die, whether lynched or murdered, they can pick one player to shoot. That player dies instantly.
Apprentice: 1 player. Becomes seer when/if the seer dies. The seer will know who the apprentice is, but not vise/versa.
Seer: 1 player. Can ask to know what one player is each night. Can use this to identify the werewolves.
Freemasons: 2-4 Players, all Freemasons will be PM'd a list of all other Freemasons. They can work together.
Werewolves: 1 for every 7 players. The werewolves will have different rankings. Each werewolf will be asked who they want to kill alongside a list of who the other werewolves want dead and why. The highest ranked werewolf will have the final say, but he may die.

To enter, just write that you want to play in the comments. Please don't enter if you don't want to keep up.
You don't have to be totally active but wasting a role on someone who isn't going to play ruins the game.

Players:
Catofblocks - Killed by the werewolves (Night 2)
    Seath45
    |Orange| - Falsely lynched by the mob (Day 2)

Flux is a pretty great tool that I have begun using that causes your computer screen to dim and change color in the night and shine brighter during the day. As someone who habitually stays up pretty late this is a bit annoying because it makes you feel tired a lot faster (which is probably healthy). However after a few weeks of using it, you can really tell how much eye strain you had before. Going back to default color, I feel like I am always squinting and stressing my eyes, rather than relaxing them.

At first when you turn it on, you will either:

1. Not see much of a difference (day)
2. Notice your screen turn dark orange and hate it for however long it takes for you to adjust (night)

Further in the settings you can customize how strong it is (and the orange/blue tint) and even include your ZIP Code so that it can know exactly what it looks like outside for you. It is helpful if you want to keep a good sleep scedule or want to fall asleep faster. Strong computer light can adjust your brain to the light, according to multiple studies.

I'm sure it's partially placebo--but you really feel a difference afterward. It only takes a few seconds to install and even has an option to disable it so after a few minutes you can see the difference. Try it.

Sometimes in the bottom-back of my neck, just above my neck, I hear these squeaking noises that are coming from inside me. It is usually accompanied by a very mild sort of tickling feeling behind my neck. It sounds sort of like an insect squeaking.

Anyone else get this?

Discuss strange body feelings that are hard to explain. Like when you feel a cut or bump with your tongue but can't find it with your finger.

This time featuring
Poetry Week

This Day's Poem: Haiku
A Haiku is a 3 line poem in which the first line has 5 syllables, the second 7, the third 5.

But what is Poetry Week?
Pick any game you want from this list, and write the proper type of poem about it! The best or most creative poem will win the game it is about! The more demanded games will be much harder to win than the lesser-known Indie Games! Good luck!

How can I win?
Just pick any game from the list (not taken) and write a short poem about it. Write the game's name at the top of your post so there is no confusion.

TLDR; pick a game, write a poem, win said game.

Edit: They have reset the price but are now only offering the card edition on sale at $85. Thus the price will never go below $59.

So if charging full price for a 2.5 year old PC port isn't bad enough, they have pulled GTA 5 from the Steam Store, and replaced it with a DLC bundle that includes GTA Online Cash. Selling Pre-Purchase bonuses is a scummy move and doing it for the same price as the backers is just insulting. Now they are at $59.89, %30 off their "full price" of $85.

This is nothing but a scumbag cash-grab by a company who has already made the best selling game of this generation. Also because the "Shark Card" is used up instantly, this voids Steam Refunds.

And it doesn't look like it went very well for them.

Off Topic / Crippling AllDaySavings Ads in Steam
« on: June 07, 2015, 07:07:39 AM »

I get a crippling number of ads when I  boot up Steam, all "Powered by AllDaySavings!". I downloaded this once after accidentally installing a shady internet re-upload of WinRAR. After realizing it was from CNET because it plastered me with offers, I immediately clicked "Cancel Install." Should've used task manager to kill it. After cancelling it quickly said "INSTALLING OFFERS..." and within seconds had Installed tons of adware all over my PC. With various adware and virus killers and browser resets I managed to get rid of them all throughout the week, excluding Steam. I've had these in Steam for a year now and nothing I do can get rid of them.

Steam has 500 GB of games on it. I can't reinstall.
