General Discussion / Blockland on Steam Deck
« on: July 28, 2022, 11:28:55 PM »
My Steam Deck came in the mail today, and of course the first game I had to try out was Blockland. And despite the "unknown" compatibility rating from steam, it actually worked on the first try.

I joined Age of Dungeons, and playing online felt normal.

I tried hosting and while no one joined me, I did try loading in a ton of default saves, and it handled it just fine.

I'd describe the controls as good enough for just playing casually, but probably definitely unusable for building. Surprisingly, there was a community bind made for the deck, revealing that someone tried this before me. The other issue I had was the inability to run shaders above minimum. Setting any higher would immediately crash the game.

It's pretty interesting to see how far SteamOS and Proton have come, considering how well blockland used to run (I wonder if Badspot still has that steam machine....) But yeah, if you felt the need to play blockland on the go, it does indeed work on the Steam Deck. Assuming you can get used to playing with controller binds.

Off Topic / what if there are other communities like us
« on: May 31, 2022, 12:23:23 AM »
So, most of us could probably agree that as of now, this forum is pretty obscure, right? I mean besides word of mouth, you probably only know about this place if you had some actual connection to it (in this case, playing blockland or being a career stuffposter at some point). I'm aware this forum had a ton of activity at some point (1.5 million posts in 2011, wow imagine that) but now it's just some lone corner of the internet with a mere fraction of the community left, with a community which is certainly no longer growing. Basically what I'm trying to say here, is that for as big as this place once was, it is still absolutely smacked by websites like youtube, reddit, twitter etc and ANY mainstream social media platform. Compared to them, the BLF does not exist. Yet, this place sits as a remaining outlet for a few people who know of its existence.

Now, imagine the same circumstances above but applied to a different community of similar size somewhere else, with a different theme. Possibly not even video game related. And they've got over 10 years of culture, lore, in-jokes, drama, and their own set of starfishs who just won't leave. Just like this place.
They're out there somewhere, staving off the inevitable transition to discord, and having their own little random discussions.

And we will never know about them.

sorry if this seems a little scattered it was just a random idea i thought was interesting

Off Topic / things you wanna buy
« on: April 23, 2022, 05:38:31 PM »
let this thread be your place to indulge in a little consumerism. maybe you can afford it all right now, or maybe you can't. who cares. just let it all out.

my list:

old honda spree. never been much into scooters, but it looks like it'd be fun to ride around on my college campus. plus, it's pretty funny looking too. i've seen some around on fb marketplace, but 9/10 have missing titles, and when they do, it's way out of budget. but one day i will find one, i'm sure of it.

fun stuff aside, i'd like to buy and add a/c to my car, since i don't currently have it. the good news is that it's a relatively simple install, and the parts are not hard to find at all. downside is i'll inevitably have to buy some components new, like a compressor and condenser ($$$$$$)

lastly, i probably need a new phone at some point since my iphone 6 is starting to become unusable. maybe new iphone se?

anyways, what about you guys?

Games / Steam Sale Secret Santa (closed)
« on: December 24, 2021, 04:52:28 PM »
in my reminiscing of previous blf secret santas (and begging threads) i figured it may be fun to bring it back for possibly the last time
here's how it'll work:

1. post in this thread with the reply "i want in" along with your steam wishlist.
2. at some point in the next 2-3 days i will close it down and randomly assign pairs of gift exchangers (may be longer depending on turnout)
3. one of my associates will send you a pm with the name of the person you will send a gift to
4. gifts are received and the holiday cheer is spread

you are free to spend as little or as much as you want, depending on how much christmas spirit you are feeling. it's totally okay if you want to just buy someone a $2 novelty game, it's the action of gift giving that counts.

this goes without saying that you'll probably need to un-private your profile if it isn't public
please guys it'll be really embarrassing for me if no one participates

Games / Manic Miners - Fan remake of Lego Rock Raiders

Manic Miners aims to be what could’ve been if the franchise continued and subsequently released a “Rock Raiders 2” or “Rock Raiders remastered”, but 20 years later. All in the spirit of 90’s Lego themes and games. While performance and fun gameplay is the most important, all assets in the game are also supposed to be of highest quality: The models, the textures, the music, the animations… you name it, it’s probably on my list.

I've always really liked the original rock raiders game, so this was an instant download for me. As expected, it plays a lot like the older game, but actually functional on modern hardware and nicer visuals looking a bit like brickadia at times.

General Discussion / Why did you keep playing Blockland?
« on: March 26, 2021, 07:43:06 PM »
I keep hearing about how one of the biggest reason this game is losing players is due to the terrible retention rate. So for the rest of us who've been here for years, what made you decide to stay? If you can remember, what motivated you to open the game a second time after buying?

Personally, I was into the virtual lego thing. Especially since I played the demo quite a bit, I kind of already knew I'd enjoy the game. Also, boss battles.
