If it's huge or you want a different texture than studs, go right ahead
I've seen some really cool buildings made from modter, too

I tend to avoid regular geometric shapes and patterns (esp. rectangles and grids) when building terrain

Speaking of terrain, it looks better to use plates and halfbricks to gradually create a small slope or landscaping features imo

If it still doesn't look good, I advise you to plant vines.
